Neither an entertaining historical book nor a good cook book

There are few reviews for this book, with only one negative. I should have paid closer attention to the negative review. I think I agree more with that reviewer. I was expecting a book detailing menus, etc. from the White House, perhaps with a few personal recipes through the years. I enjoy reading old cook books--for example, the Times-Picayune Creole cook book comes to mind. I thought this one might be similar. Boy was I wrong! The recipes in this book have been "updated" by a couple of apparently humorless dieticians. What on earth were they thinking? I realize I am an accomplished cook and some people without any culinary experience might need a little more guidance, but who would choose to serve dishes that include bouillon granules, egg substitute, and "butter buds". Butter buds! Other "updated" recipes call for instant onions (!), dried parsley (!), red food coloring (!). The few original recipes that are in the book are not put in any kind of historical context--they are barely a blurb with a notation that they were from the 1894 cook book. Anyway, just be advised that if you are looking for an enjoyable read about culinary traditions in the White House, purchase the original book and not this updated version. I hope I can help others not waste the $12--this was my mistake, so I'll go ahead and get the genuine, unaltered version. I would also recommend that you just search on the internet for recipes, as the ones included in this volume would not be worth the time spent preparing them.

Beware of the updated recipes

I was shocked to read the "updates". The preface says "the call for lard, fat, cream, eggs, or salt in most of the original recipes makes them unsuitable for today". Are these authors still stuck back in the 80's? Tests are showing that these good fats are not only good for you, but needed for continued health. The updates substitute margerine for butter, corn syrup for sugar, egg substitutes for real eggs, etc. They also think it is ok to use ginger ale and carbonated drinks that contain HFCS. Are they kidding? Processed foods and food-like substitutes have been shown to be very detrimental to our health and should be avoided at all costs. Eggs from free-range chickens - where the yolks are orange are a perfect food, as is butter and cream from grass-fed cows.

In the introduction, the authors do concede that diseases including obesity, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular, as well as forms of cancer have increased and are among the leading causes of death. Duh --- should tell them something, shouldn't it?

If you buy this book, do not use the updated recipes for your health's sake. I wish now I had purchased the original.

This is a great book on cooking through the century as a avid cook book collector and cook I found it to be useful and educational all at the same time, the best receipes are usually the most simple to prepare. Love the book.....

Great explanation of Probability Theory

Probabilities and statistical chances are great and I use them in my line of work, but when money is on the line I want more then the theory and probabilities of chance making my decisions. . . . This book is better off in the classroom or for someone who enjoys theory and the intellectual challenge of proving the theory correct.

Finally a system for the little guy!!

I read this book with mixed feelings. First, after looking at some of the reviews, I wondered if we were reading the same book. Now I know why -- the writing is terrible. Some sections I had to read 3 or 4 times before I even began to understood what he was talking abou. It does not surprise me that several reviewers obviously were clueless on what he was talking about. This book desperately needs a re-work.
My second reaction was "Finally a system for the small accounts". Most of the money systems I've seen are designed for major accounts (e.g. "don't risk more than 2% on a trade" -- yeah, right!) The trader with $10,000 or less should find a very workable system to manage his account. His system handles important issues of how to build equity on the way up, and another section on handling downturns, including streaks. He gives a good discussion on other money management techniques as well.
Wow!
It will take several.... several readings for it to make sense, but, believe me, it is well worth the effort. Hopefully we can look forward to a second edition that makes sense.

About the Author
About the Author David V. Ragone received his S. B., S. M., and Sc.D. degrees in metallurgical engineering from MIT. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses in thermodynamics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from 1953 to 1962. From 1962 to 1967, as chairman of the materials department and assistant director of the Hopkins laboratory at the General Atomic Division of General Dynamics, he directed research on materials for advanced, high-temperature, gas-cooled nuclear reactors. He then served as Alcoa Professor of Metallurgy at the Carnegie- Mellon University, where he was also Associate Dean of Urban and Public Affairs. In 1970, he was named dean of the Thayer School at Dartmouth, and returned to the University of Michigan as Dean of Engineering in 1972. In 1980, he was named President of the Case Western University, where he served until 1987. He returned to teaching undergraduate courses in thermodynamics and the physical chemistry of materials at MIT in 1988, and began writing texts shortly thereafter. In addition to his appointment at MIT, David Ragone is a partner in Ampersand Ventures, a firm whose focus is on ventures in specialty materials and chemicals. He has also served as a member of the National Science Board and as a director of more than a dozen public and private companies. His professional society memberships include ASM, AIME, and ACS.

Good Intermediate Materials Science Teat

This review refers to Volume I which was I used in a recent graduate materials thermodynamics course. Completing two prior courses in classical thermodynamics oriented towards mechanical engineering and a survey course in Materials Science proved helpful in providing a background for a better understanding the material in this text. However, the basics are developed but in less detail. The text is definitely oriented towards understanding the basics in the application of thermodynamics to materials science and provides reasonable coverage of chemical equilibrium and binary solutions.
The material is developed sequentially so it is best to start at the beginning and work through each section. Fortunately I had access to most of the typographical errors but they do not represent a major hurdle to the basic quality of the theory presented and its understanding. It would have proved useful to the student had the author included answers to selected problems. Overall, I found this to be a good intermediate text.

In addition to the glowing comments by the other reviewers, the history of document design included a history of the teaching of English (and technical writing) and how it was and is perceived by professionals. I found it a fascinating re-examination of our attitudes and priorities.

The resource I keep coming back to...

This book is the most useful one I've found on the subject. Design books of all stripes (document-design focused or otherwise) have a tendency to provide "principles" without ever providing real support for said principles. Books will be loaded with recommendations that may or may not be well supported by data, quantified or at least well documented study results, etc.

Schriver's book does exactly the opposite, and this is why it is longer than many others. It is impossible to read about Schriver's document design principles and not know exactly where they came from. Virtually every recommendation is, for once, well supported by research findings. This book never tells you to do something without first explaining why it should be done.

If you're looking for a short-and-sweet book that conveys the most basic principles of document design ("principles" that may in fact be a designer's personal preferences), this isn't it.

If you're looking for a book that will help you make better design decisions and help you understand why to make these decisions over others, then this is the book for you. After all, it isn't so unusual for professional designers and others in the workplace to have to explain exactly why they've made certain choices over others, and this book can help.

About the Author
James Trefil’s interest in scientific literacy began with a contributed essay to E.D. Hirsch’s Cultural Literacy and continued with his work on the Content Review Board for the National Science Education Standards. He has authored or coauthored numerous books on science for the general audience. He serves as a regular contributor and science consultant for Smithsonian Magazine and as a science commentator on National Public Radio. He received undergraduate degrees from the University of Illinois and Oxford University. After receiving a doctorate in theoretical physics from Stanford University, he held postdoctorate and faculty appointments in Europe and the United States. James Trefil is the Clarence Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University. He has made contributions to research in elementary particle physics, fluid mechanics, medical physics (including cancer research), and the earth sciences. Robert M. Hazen is the Clarence Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University and Staff Scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington’s Geophysical Laboratory. Hazen developed a fascination for rocks and minerals as a child growing up in mineral-rich Northern New Jersey, and he pursued that interest as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After receiving a doctorate in earth sciences from Harvard University, he spent a year at Cambridge University as a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow. In addition to teaching courses on scientific literacy, scientific ethics, symmetry in art and science, and visual thinking, he performs research on materials at high pressure. His current studies on the origin of life explore the hypothesis that life arose in a deep, high-pressure environment. Robert Hazen is also a part-time professional trumpeter.

Good for expository writing.

I was lucky enough to run into this expository English manual at my local library. I have seen a lot of these books and few are as good as this one by Baden Eunson. What makes it a non-pareil is that it is very concise, only 200 pages or so, and direct. I have been told that I tend to write and speak evasively (like this sentence) in an indirect passive manner, but I have never understood previosly why other than grammar checker flagging it, why it was wrong. Eunson's book cut right to the chase and showed me examples of this and then went further, expalined how the impersonal passive is evasive, who is responsible is not cited, and suspicious, how can you trust me if I don't cite sources? This is just one example of many in this book. Highly recommended for those learning expository writing, or like me like to perfect theirs.
