Despite the title, Darwin's Origin of Species doesn't really explain how new species are born. Scientists have been struggling with that thorny problem ever since its publication, and the recent revolution in molecular biology has turned up great piles of new evidence. Anthropologist Jeffrey H. Schwartz takes a close look at this evidence, as well as the more traditional paleontological material, in Sudden Origins: Fossils, Genes, and the Emergence of Species. He claims that the tide is turning in favor of "punctuated equilibrium"--the theory that species typically remain static for great lengths of time and then experience brief spurts of accelerated change--thanks in no small part to the discovery of homeobox genes.

These remarkable structures are the genetic equivalent of the proverbial butterfly wings that cause hurricanes halfway around the world--small changes can produce enormous effects. Homeobox genes regulate development and are remarkable similar between species and even between phyla--you share some with fruit flies, for example. By turning our attention toward embryology and development, Schwartz shows us that fossils can't tell the whole story, since much of it lies within the womb. He covers a lot of ground and stretches the reader's intellectual muscles; the scope of Sudden Origins and the greater understanding of Darwin's problem make the challenge well worth it. --Rob Lightner

Anthropology professor (Univ. of Pittsburgh) Schwartz's latest tome (after The Red Ape) is best viewed as a combination of three books that are only loosely tied together. The first blends changing ideas about human ancestors, a brief summary of their fossil evidence and a look at some of the dominant figures in archeology to provide a historical overview of human evolution. The second reviews theories about the origins of species while providing a somewhat idiosyncratic history of evolutionary biology from Charles Darwin to the present. The third, and briefest, offers Schwartz's ideas on how new species arise. Like many scientists before him, Schwartz argues that regulatory genes called homeobox genes, which were discovered in the 1980s, control developmental processes in such a way that small alterations to their structure can lead to major shifts in organisms, possibly even creating new species. Stressing the importance of an integrated approach to the study of evolution, Schwartz contends that "there is a very real need to return the study of comparative morphology, and especially development, to the fore of evolutionary biology." Perhaps. But his dense book is neither sufficiently innovative to gain the attention of most experts nor sufficiently eloquent to hold the interest of the general science reader.

A nagging problem with Darwin's theory of evolution has been the issue of "missing links"Athe sudden appearance of new life forms significantly different from their ancestors, with no sign of intermediary forms in the fossil record. Schwartz (anthropology, Univ. of Pittsburgh) proposes an explanation of how this could occur based on recent research in genetics and developmental biology. Crucial to his explanation is the role of homeobox or "hox" genes, which control the rate and duration of growth of an organism and its parts and greatly affect its adult form. As background to his own synthesis of how evolution works, Schwartz also provides a detailed discussion of the theories of significant figures in the history of evolutionary thought. This is a scholarly, intriguing, and significant work, well documented with notes, although they lack the convenience of numbering. Related titles in a somewhat more popular style include Peter J. Bowler's Life's Splendid Drama (LJ 11/15/96), a history of evolutionary thought through 1940, and Kenneth J. McNamara's Shapes of Time (LJ 10/1/97), an explanation of new evolutionary ideas based on the rates and timing of an organism's development. Important book, but too much history and not enough new data

Schwartz spends most of his book on the history of evolutionary theory, which is fine from the perspective of a historian of science, but then there isn't much of the book left for development of newer ideas. Pages are spent on Linnaeus but next to nothing on cladisitics; much detailed attention is given to detailed reports of the first hominid fossils found, even to Piltdown, but more recent findings are hardly mentioned, surprising given that he is even now editing an authorative volume with Tattersall on hominid fossils. However, credit is due for developing the thesis that the discontinuous fossil record is due to the relatively sudden emergence of species from changes in regulatory molecules such as the homeobox genes. Rudolph Raff, in The Shape of Life (an excellent book which Schwartz quotes) previously developed the thesis that macroevolution of body plans was dependent on these genes, but did not emphasize the discontinuous fossil record. Although we don't get to a discussion of the new ideas until the last 10% of the book, nonetheless, this whole area of evolutionary developmental genetics is of such fundamental importance that the book is worth reading. In the relatively near future, with new fields such as comparative genomics (comparing entire DNA sequences of one organism to another), and computerized analysis of developmental expression of complete sets of cellular proteins analyzed on biochips, the promise of reconstructing, at a molecular level, the evolutionary history of life on earth has begun. I'd also like to take issue with the reviewer who thought Schwartz "savaged" Darwin. He does not, though as part of his detailed review of the early debates on evolution he quotes scientists who do attack Darwin's ideas. And although it's true that actual research details on speciation and changes in homeobox genes are at an early stage, and that Schwartz is not a researcher himself in this area, again I think he's on the right track. For example, see the article by Ting et al. (Science 1998 282:1501)about a rapidly changing homeobox gene linked to speciation in Drosophila. Overall, I think the book is an important one, but could have been much improved as a scientific text by giving a broader picture of newer data and less emphasis on historical personalities, though as written it is designed to appeal more to an educated lay audience than to the professional.

Full of Factual errors. Theories based on poor background.

Despite the intellectual pretensions of this book, Sudden Origins is poorly reasoned and is based on a naive understanding of much of the science on which it is based. It is filled with irritating errors. Most organisms stop growing when they reach sexual maturity, but many do not. Chert and flint are not volcanic rocks. The fossil record cited by Schwartz is limited almost exclusively to hominid specimens. While this might be expected from a paleoanthropologist, it is rather limiting for someone discussing the evolution of species. Schwartz's understanding of genetics seems to be limited to the high-school version of dominant and recessive traits, a brilliant deduction for Mendel, but a gross oversimplification as we approach the 21st century. The importance of mutations in the genes regulating development, such as the homeobox genes, is an interesting subject of current research, but the effects are far more varied and complex than Schwartz indicates. Such mutations can sometimes cause major developmental changes, but this does not imply that gaps in the fossil record are explained by this type of mutation. Given his own lack of sophistication in modern genetic, developmental, and evolutionary work, Schwartz's savaging of Darwin is in particularly poor taste. Darwin developed the idea of natural selection in spite of having limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms of change. This makes his achievement more intellectually impressive, not less. Darwin mastered the scientific knowledge of his time and built uppon it. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Schwartz.

The history of evolutionary thinking

Contrary to what is being advertised, it is not mainly a book about a new theory of evolution. It is above all a book about the history of evolutionnary thinking, endlessly recounting its major events and disputes. Don't expect any more a synthetic introduction to what is known on homeobox genes, though the book jacket says it is central to the new theory.

Brief Child Therapy Homework Planner

If you work with underprivileged kids, as I do, you will find this book's exercises very difficult to use. The exercises require sustained attention for reading long passages, and the vocabulary level is extremely high, even for my 7th grade clients. Many exercises require critical thinking and creative writing skills, which my client's have great difficulty with as well. Most inner city kids I work with are performing 2-3 grade levels behind, and look at me like I am crazy when I try to do these exercises with them.
This book would work great with middle/upper-middle class kids who are taught verbal skills from the get go.

Child Homework Planner Review

I feel this book is an excellent resource for students, teachers, family, and clinicians. I use this book on a regular basis, incorporating each homework assignment into each session and treatment plan. It is very helpful in defining the appropriate technique to a specific problem area. This book gives specific homework assignments for particular diagnoses. As clinicians, we can use this book to explore assignments other clinicians have found useful. We can also increase our knowledge of new homework assignments. This book is different to other books due to its specificity to various childhood disorders. I recommend counseling classes use this book as a guide to learn techniques. I also recommend families to read this book and try out the homework assignments. As a psychotherapist, I have found this book to be a highly effective tool in my everyday work with childhood disorders.

A Fantastic Introduction to Virology

Fundamentals of Molecular Virology is by far one of the most readable scientific textbooks I have ever come across. The focus is on common characteristics of virus families rather than on individuals. For example, rather than having a chapter just covering the rabies virus this book has a chapter on the Rhabdovirus family and covers the mechanisms that each of the commonly studied rhabdoviruses use for each of the viral life cycle stages.

The book is also organized into orders, each of the viral orders will have their families grouped together. The rhabdovirus chapter is right next to the paramyxoviridae and filoviridae viruses to make up the mononegavirales order.

The writing is clear and concise. The style of writing is geared towards an audience with no previous virology experience and gently guides the reader through the basics of virology. Some attention is given to laboratory procedure but the book was not written as a lab manual and so it only provides a brief overview of some of the common techniques.

The biggest weakness of the book is in graphic illustration. Many of the illustrations are bland and monochromatic - there is very little use of color for a textbook this expensive.

If you are taking a virology or microbiology course I would strongly recommend that you get a copy of this book as a reference regardless of what textbook your instructor uses.

This book is perfect for the beginning/moderate virology student- concise but detailed reviews of many viruses. I highly recommend it for supplementary aid.

I found this book to be more helpful as a review than a primary source of learning, particularly because it is written in a concise manner and because I feel like the explanation of some modes of viral replication were completely lacking. Now, if the images that accompanied some of the replication processes had been better (looking at you, hepadnavirus), then I could let the lack of information slide, but it seems as if one area slacked, then they both slacked. And I do realize that trying to draw some of these processes is difficult because of how they're occurring in 3D, but many of the figures left a lot to the imagination.

Also, it would have been nice to see an attempt to present the same type of information on all the viruses. Some of the chapters were so scarce on diseases caused, what the actual virus looks like (more SEMs!), epidemiology, history/origins, etc, while other chapters were rich with this type of information. This, again, left me feeling like this book was incomplete.

Its a Solid Introduction

Honestly this is a 4 star book, but like many of the advanced math textbooks the average score is too low, because of reviewers who clearly did not understand what they were getting into.

Probably the best piece of advice with regards to advanced math books like this is given in the "Preface to the Student" in Sheldon Axler's Linear Algebra Done Right, he states: "You cannot expect to read mathematics the way you read a novel. If you zip through a page in less than an hour, you are probably going too fast."

If you study from this book from that standpoint, you will get a lot out of it. But its a serious commitment.

Decent Book

In Analysis I, we used the first 6 chapters of this book and now in Analysis II, we're covering most of the rest. This book is quite good. When I use this book, I often sit in front of a computer so that I can look up anything I don't understand. Basically, I study Analysis all from this book, Wikipedia, and random sites. I do agree that if you don't have access to full solutions to some problems at first, it's not easy to imitate the proofs in the book.

One thing to point out is the exercises are quite crucial. If you don't do most, you will miss many subtleties that are not explicitly mentioned. For example, a function that is continuous except for countably many (maybe infinite) discontinuities is integrable. Another thing to note is for Chapter 7 which is more succint and to the point in 2nd ed. than in the 3rd.

If you want solutions, with a bit of search on google you can find quite many. The key is to search for Universities that use this book and check out the course webpage.

In Analysis III and IV, we use Rudin.

Great Book

I'm using this book for my real analysis course at University of Illinois and I love it. Most readers seem to be upset that some of the material isn't presented as easily as it could be, but this book is an introduction to real analysis, not to math. This is not a good book for people who have never written or read formal proofs or who are not familiar with concepts like the triangle inequality. This is a good book if you are familiar with formal mathematics and have interest in real analysis.

About the Author
Before going to Wayne State, Stephen Spurr was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Social and Decision Sciences at Carnegie-Mellon University. He has published articles in the RAND Journal of Economics, the Industrial and Labor Relations Review, the International Review of Law and Economics, the Journal of Labor Economics, the Journal of Human Resources, and many other journals. His primary research interests are in the areas of labor economics and economic analysis of law. He has published articles on promotion and turnover, sports economics, the economics of the legal and nursing professions, alternative dispute resolution, organ transplantation, medical malpractice, and capital punishment. He wrote an essay on Collateral Estoppel for The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law (London: Macmillan).

With a love of hand needlework of all types from early childhood, Cheryl Barnes discovered machine quilting and purchased a longarm machine in 1994. She began her own quilting business, Golden Threads, at that time. After quilting for several years, Cheryl felt limited by the lack of new patterns available to longarm quilters. The pursuit of building a library of quilting designs took Cheryls company from quilting to publishing quilting designs.

BURTON V. BARNES is Professor of Forestry at the University of Michigan. Formerly a research forester, he is best known for his research and publications in forest ecology and forest genetics.

Excellent Forest Ecology Text

This book was required text for a 400+ level undergrad (Junior/Senior) and graduate course at the University of Maine. I thought the text was very engaging, and adequately and thoroughly covered the major themes in Forest Ecology. This text continues to serve as a reference for me as I used this text for comprehensive examination review and in writing my dissertation. I have not reviewed other Forest Ecology books, however can say that this text is outstanding in the presentation of material and in its readability for those who have an understanding of general ecology.

Not a good book for students of forest ecology

This book is the required text for a class on trees and forests that I am currently taking at UC Davis. It is an imposing text and reads much like a journal of ecology. It is far from a good study aid for undergrads and grad students in forest ecology. However, given its copious literature citations, it could easily serve as a reference text for an advanced undergraduate course or graduate seminar.
The book comes full of graphs, charts and pictures, but much of it is superfluous. Key terms and concepts are not fully explained for initiates, a glossary of terms is non-existent for quick reference, and brief, detailed summaries of each chapter are not provided at the end of each chapter for time-pressed students. The book also contains numerous photographs of forest stands, maps, diagrams, and charts; however, because none of these are in color, they lose much of their visual impact, detail and valuable utility. Furthermore, there are no study questions at the end of each chapter for exam preparation. As such, initiates to forestry or landscape ecology looking for a good introduction to the field are pretty much out of luck.
Although the book has gone through four editions, it is still quite far from being a good textbook. In addition to the above mentioned comments, the writing style needs to be tighter. However, negatives aside, teachers and educators looking for examples of many of the concepts in forest ecology for use in class discussions will find this an invaluable text.

Excellent book and great overview of Forest Ecology concepts

The book is an excellent overview of various Forest Ecology concepts, great detail on many useful topics. What's especially important is that it is not narrowly centered on forest or silvicultural topics alone. The reader is introduced to essential must-know concepts from closely related ecological fields of basic plant biology and soil science that altogether make the "big picture" of forest ecology complete and placed in the appropriate context. I personally had to use it as a textbook first, and after that it became my long-term reference that I frequently go back to.
