Lee Moves North "A revisionist look at Lee's career . detailed and interesting." --Orlando Sentinel "Michael Palmer says that Robert E. Amazon.com Review
For much of the Civil War, Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia fought on the defensive, but it's during three specific invasions northward--Antietam, Gettysburg, and the lesser-known Bristoe Station--that both the genius and failings of General Lee come to light. Historian Michael Palmer offers a revisionist look at how Lee, who has been at times nearly universally revered, made serious mistakes when engaging in offensive operations. Regardless of whether the reader totally agrees with Palmer's thesis, the argument is well presented, and the sources cited and Palmer's writing could engender a lively debate.

From the Publisher
Few military figures have attained the legendary status of Robert E. Lee. Yet, though he displayed tactical brilliance in the defensive mode, Lee's offensive moves were often hastily undertaken with virtually no logistical preparation. And not surprisingly, these assaults ended in defeat. Lee Moves North explores the weaknesses of Lee's leadership by focusing on three of his unsuccessful campaigns to break ground in the North: the abortive Maryland invasion in Sharpsburg of 1862, the disastrous Gettysburg campaign of 1863, and the lesser-know Bristoe Station fiasco later that year.

From the Inside Flap
Lee Moves North In a brilliant, revisionist look at the career, leadership capability, and decisive campaigns of the legendary Robert E. Lee, historian Michael A. Palmer offers a compelling new portrait of one of the most enigmatic and controversial figures of the Civil War. Venerated on both sides of the conflict, Lee nevertheless had—and continues to have—passionate detractors. Those who dispute his place in history claim that the real Robert E. Lee was a soldier whose faults were so marked that he not only failed to defend the Confederacy, but also was himself a cause of its undoing. The truth, Palmer shows, is more complex, for while Lee displayed undisputed tactical brilliance when fighting on the defensive, his strategic offensives often led to disaster. Lee Moves North explains, in riveting detail, why a commander who won a spectacular success at Chancellorsville in May 1863 could suffer so terrible a defeat only two months later at Gettysburg. In a fascinating analysis of Lee’s generalship, Palmer forcefully argues that the celebrated leader had a penchant for hastily planned offensives undertaken with virtually no logistical preparation. Drawing on extensive documentation, including Lee’s personal correspondence, Michael Palmer focuses on the crucial period between September 1862 and November 1863—specifically, three decisive campaigns: the abortive Maryland invasion that ended at Sharpsburg, the landmark battle of Gettysburg, and the lesser-known Bristoe Station fiasco that came shortly thereafter. As he vividly recreates the battles and maneuvers, Palmer offers new interpretations of several hotly debated episodes, including J. E. B. "Jeb" Stuart’s infamous ride around the Federal army during the Gettysburg campaign. Was the alternate plan outlined by Lee in fact unworkable? Lee Moves North reveals how the general’s penchant for secrecy about his plans—a prerequisite for the political battle he waged with his superiors in Richmond—undermined the Army of Northern Virgina. Keeping his true intentions hidden from President Jefferson Davis and Secretary of War James Seddon meant also keeping the plans secret from even the army’s trusted corps commanders. As a result, inadequate support, poor or nonexistent staff work, and confusion about campaign objectives all contributed to failure. In fact, Palmer’s meticulously crafted account demonstrates a direct correlation between the troubled relationship of Lee and Davis and the actual outcome on the battlefield. Powerful and persuasive, Lee Moves North is a bold and beautifully detailed work, and a requisite addition to any Civil War collection.

An excellent study of Robert E. Lee's strategic failures
By A Customer
Michael Palmer's analysis of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's strategic operations during the American Civil War reveals a general who was (and remains) without peer as a tactical genius, but also one who possessed dubious talents as a military strategist. Palmer focuses on three notable strategic offensives undertaken by the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under Lee's command: The Sharpsburg campaign of September 1862, the Gettysburg campaign of June-July 1863 and the Bristoe Station campaign of late 1863. All three campaigns possessed several common characteristics: (1) A lack of proper logistical support for the forces in the field (2) The lack of a clear-cut military objective. As a consequence, all three Confederate strategic campaigns ended in a stalemate and the withdrawal of the Army of Northen Virginia from the fields of battle. In defense of Lee, it has been speculated that Lee's strategic judgement was impaired as the Gettysburg campaign began in June 1863 due to a heart ailment and that he suffered a heart attack at the height of the battle in early July 1863. In the end, these failed strategic offensives contributed - along with the Union's superior manpower reserves, overwhelming industrial production facilities and the hard-won quality of its officers and enlisted men - to the defeat of the Confederacy. Palmer's work is an excellent study of Robert E. Lee's strategic mind and is worthy of study, reflection and debate by students and scholars of the American Civil War.

Lee's Offensive Strategy
By E. E Pofahl
In the book's preface, Professor Palmer asks the thought provoking question "Did he and his lieutenants simply have a couple of bad days? Or were there other factors at work? ....could the strategic offensive, then be the shared thread, the common denominator that might help to explain Lee's failures?" He then reviews Lee's Maryland, Gettysburg and Bristoe Station campaigns to answer his question.
In Chapter 1, Palmer states that lacking published plans and with an ambiguous objective, Lee moved into Maryland without Jeff Davis's prior approval . The author asserts that the Maryland campaign was a Federal success and allowed "the Lincoln administration to solidify its political support...." Quite the contrary happened. Aghast at the Antietam casualties, northern voters in the 1862 fall elections for governors and congressmen, gave Lincoln's party several major reverses. The chapter makes the ridiculous comparison that "Lee was one of many southerners caught up in a wave of `victory disease', not unlike that which gripped the Japanese before the battle of Midway". The Japanese defeat at Midway was not due to "victory disease" but due to their naval code having been broken and Admiral Nagumo's bad tactical decision,
Nevertheless, regarding Maryland, Professor Palmer correctly writes "Why had Lee failed? The answer is simple: virtually all of the assumptions upon which he based his plans were unfounded."
The Gettysburg campaign chapter is well written and objective. The review of events leading to the Gettysburg campaign is excellent. Normally given limited coverage, the narration of the meetings in Richmond with Davis and his cabinet plus the correspondence regarding Lee's Gettysburg campaign is very interesting. Palmer reviews Lee's organization problems writing "....two of the three men leading corps and three of the nine men leading divisions were untested at their new levels of commands....Such dramatic changes in the organization and leadership....suggested the need for delays, not haste." Considerable space is devoted to whether Lee wanted to fight a major battle in Pennsylvania quoting Lee stating in 1868 that "he did not want to fight" and ending with Lee biographer Emory Thomas's statement "that battle was central to Lee's plan."
Palmer noted "....two fundamental forces worked against the successful execution of Lee's campaign, First....it was never was properly developed....Second, Lee relied on a very decentralized approach to command and control." Lee's decentralized command philosophy required component subordinates. Regarding the competence at Gettysburg of Lee's key commanders, Stuart, Ewell, and Longstreet , the book provides a brief review of their failures concluding that "....while Ewell's incompetence and Longstreet's recalcitrance were important factors, Lee's unwillingness to issue direct orders or to take charge of the battle lay at the root of the problem".
Analysis of Lee's strategic offensive continues with a review of the Bristoe Station campaign. Again Lee initiated a campaign in secrecy, without a clearly stated objective, no detailed operation plan and limited or misleading communications to Richmond. The author speculates that one motive for the campaign was to prevent further detachment of Lee's troops to the west and states "Lee moved north to engage Meade because the latter had not come south....Had Meade been more aggressive in August or Lee been able to take the offensive, Davis would never have sent Longstreet west." The book notes that the command problems evident at Gettysburg had not been corrected and lacking capable corps commanders another debacle occurred. Professor Palmer states that "while Heth and Hill were blamed, Lee also bore some responsibility for the failures of his subordinates" and concludes at Bristoe Station "....for Lee to attack an army twice the size of his own in October was absurd."
Evaluating Lee, in the fourth and final chapter the author asks the critical question "Could the South have won the Civil War?" Professor Palmer contends that while the North had countless advantages, the Confederacy had several advantages noting that the South did not need to invade or conquer the North to win stating "The Confederacy had only to survive until the Yankees lost their will to continue the struggle." Referencing the writings of Clausewitz and Delbruck, Southern strategies are evaluated noting that the Confederate government failed to adopt either a strategy of exhaustion or of annihilation. He further states that Lee's contributed to the South's failure to adopt a consistent strategic policy in that he usurped Davis's role as commander-in chief while Davis failed to respond and shape a well-defined national strategy.
Professor Palmer writes Lee launched all three offensives without anything approaching a formal plan basically commanding by the seat of his pants. He writes "LEE'S TWIN PENCHANTS for the offensive and for secrecy contorted the outline of Confederate national strategy between 1862 and 1863 and led to his own failures as a commander." He notes that the traits that served Lee so well for strategic defense failed him when his army went over to the strategic offensive.
The book's weakness is that it does not ask "why ?" With Lee's respect for authority, why didn't Davis control strategy directing Lee to comply and fully reveal his plans? Why would a commander noted for honesty and integrity try to deceive Richmond? Regarding a strictly defensive strategy, was Lee independently responding to Frederick the Great's chilling aphorism "He who defends everything, defends nothing."? Why was Lee secretive, was it solely to deceive or was it basically because both North and South were getting critical intelligence from the newspapers? Etc.
Some may take offense at the concluding statement "...what Lee failed to understand was that a commander of an army can no more effectively shape national strategy on the sly and on the cheap, than a tail can wag a dog." But for the historian or serious student of the Civil War, this short book is worth reading as thought provoking, often controversial, issues are raised.

Practical Contracting Process, Templates, and Tools
By Alicia Crumpton
I have an older version of this book (2000) and have referred to it frequently when considering outsourcing, in thinking through partnering potentials, and in considering consultant hires. Halvey & Melby systematically walk you through the things you need to consider including: planning, defining the scope, vendor selection, negotiations, contracting, measuring performance, human resources, projects, international considerations, post and re-negotiation activities, and termination.

This is a practical reference book!

BPO 2nd edition review
By Isma
The book is quite interesting in matter of setting an initial framework for BPO contracts, provisions and so forth. However I do think that it lacks a little in depth in matters of theoretical BPO foundation and/or importance. Every piece of information within the book is not quite up to date, which means it has content from 2005 and backwards, no recent developments ins regard to the topic exist.

Integrated Management Systems: A Practical Approach to Transforming Organizations, by Thomas H. Lee, Shoji Shiba, Robert Chapman Wood

Based on a profoundly important six-year study by the Center for the Quality of Management (CQM), "Integrated Management Systems" shows how successful organizations accomplish something unbelievably powerful: Creating their own particular ways of executing the scientific method. The authors worked with the cooperation of some of America's largest companies - Teradyne, Hewlett-Packard, Eastman Chemical, Ritz-Carlton -- and of non-profit organizations including top hospitals and the U.S. Navy. They were surprised to find how radically successful systems differed from one organization to the next.

Yet the core of each was universal: Each organization had designed a system that gathered data about the organization's particular problems, developed theories, tested the theories, and finally documented and shared the results throughout the organization. Each successful organization's methods were unique much as the methods of each successful discipline within the sciences are unique. But less successful organizations had nothing comparable. And the processes through which the leaders in these organizations had gotten them on the right path had a great deal in common.

Review
"This is a thought-provoking book that will stimulate a constructive reevaluation of widespread management practices - and they badly need such reevaluation. If it does nothing else - and it does much more - it would deserve serious reading.(Russell L. Ackoff, Chairman, INTERAC, The Institute for Interactive Management)

"Nothing would improve the performance of managers and organizations more than a deeper understanding of the potential and limitations inherent in management systems. This superb book, by three outstanding scholars, goes a very long way to that end." (Louis E. Lataif, Dean Boston University School of Management)

"Finally, a book which offers pragmatics instead of polemics regarding the whole notion of quality and what it means to be a quality-based organization. This is no one-minute manager but a thoughtful and reflective guide to action. (Michael Lissack, Director, Organization Science-Related Programs, New England Complex Systems Institute, and Editor-in-Chief, "Emergence: A Journal of Complexity Issues in Organizations and Management")

"An innovative synthesis of American systems theory and Japanese TQM practice that will become the standard reference text for researchers and practitioners everywhere." (Dr. Eamonn Murphy, Director, National Centre for Quality Management University of Limerick, Ireland)

From the Inside Flap
In 1993, the world-renowned Center for Quality of Management embarked on a profoundly important six-year study of how organizations improve throughout America. The results will permanently alter thinking about what constitutes organizational excellence. Contrary to expectations, the authors found that successful systems of management differed radically. The Ritz-Carlton Hotels, for instance, couldn't apply the prescriptions that worked so well at Teradyne, the world's leading maker of semiconductor test devices. And at a spectacularly successful public school district, the system differed even more.

Yet at the core of each was something universal and unbelievably powerful: Each organization had developed its own particular way of executing the scientific method. Each had found its own ways of gathering data, developing theories, testing the theories, and finally documenting and sharing results. Each organization's scientific method was unique, much as the methods of each successful discipline within the sciences are unique. But less successful organizations had nothing comparable.

For the first time, readers go behind the scenes at Teradyne, Hewlett-Packard, Eastman Chemical, Ritz-Carlton, Intermountain Health Care, the U.S. Navy, and Synetics, among others, to observe firsthand how they achieved their well-known successes.

In Integrated Management Systems, authors Lee, Shiba, and Wood-all noted experts in integrated management and learning systems-explore the lessons learned from the CQM study. They explain how managers can create their own integrated management systems. They reveal the weaknesses that prevent effective integrated management systems from emerging in America. And they describe key ideas and tools managers can use in developing their own systems.

Integrated Management Systems will be a source of inspiration and ideas for all kinds of managers and planners in for-profit and nonprofit organizations alike.

Don't know what to do without the hero-leader - read this
By Jamie Flinchbaugh
If you read this book in conjunction with Kent Bowen's Harvard Business Review article 'Decoding the DNA of the Toyota Production System (Sept. Oct. 1999) you will get more out of both. The language and case studies are a little different, but the purpose is the same: to develop a system to utilize the scientific method in problem solving at every level of the organization. This book can take you through this complex world and tie together all the fragments we've been studying for years. Whether it's called lean manufacturing or operating systems or TQM, they are all systems that tie tools together in a common purpose. Understand: (1) how to tie it together, (2) how to teach and learn about it, and (3) how to implement it. This isn't a book with just one idea rehashed over and over; the devil is in the details, and this is filled with useful details that have been tested and proven effective. Before you set about trying to change or design your organization, read this book first. The only thing that I would have liked to see to make it better is a chapter on Toyota, the most benchmarked Integrated Management System in the world.

Accountants' Handbook
By A Customer
Working in public accounting for a long time, but beeing new to the accounting world in the U.S., I found this book very instructive and helpful to resolve practical questions on one hand and finding access to the underlying "World of Statements", the scientific backbone, at the same time.
First it offers a red thread through most of the relevant areas of accounting and financial reporting. But even more important, the book contains a reliable and quick guidance to find solutions for a lot of different actual practical issues, occurring in specific industries and situations.

Amazon.com Review
Having written about all it takes to become a chef in Becoming a Chef, and about how those chefs do their work in Culinary Artistry, James Beard Award-winning authors Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page have turned their attention, with Dining Out, to the subject of restaurants and restaurant critics. Restaurant owners, chefs, and critics alike get their turn to discuss the mercurial world of restaurant criticism--is the restaurant critic a valiant consumer advocate or a villainous ruiner of careers and businesses?

Dornenburg and Page interview 61 members of this "food intelligentsia" and offer the reader a snapshot of the process on either side of the kitchen door. New York Times critic Ruth Reichl notes, "I wake up in the middle of almost every night before a review is printed, agonizing over where the mistakes are.... I knew if I had called a turnip a rutabaga, my career was over." And chef Norman Van Aken says he believes "wholeheartedly in the idea of critical analysis, whether for books, movies, or restaurants. I just wish the public would understand that there are bad reviewers as well as bad reviews." Through interviews and research, Dornenburg and Page explore what it takes to become a critic, how the critics themselves feel about their power (not to mention what the restaurateurs feel), and the changing nature of what makes a great restaurant.

The book is packed with great quotes from chefs and critics, and peppered with sidebars on such handy topics as how to work with a wine steward in a restaurant to achieve the wine experience you're looking for. A lengthy appendix lists critics' favorite restaurants in more than 20 cities, and the beautiful black-and-white photographs by Michael Donnelly evoke both the fun and serious sides of restaurant life. Dining Out will appeal to foodies who delight in the behind-the-scenes stories of both chef and critic, and to anyone who's ever wondered just who those restaurant critics are, anyway.

From Publishers Weekly
Anybody who has ever dreamed of joining a restaurant critic's inner circle will thoroughly enjoy this gossipy, insider's view by the 1996 winners of the James Beard Award for Best Writing on Food (Becoming a Chef). Interviews with leading critics and restaurateurs are a major part of the author's investigation into the methods employed by critics and the effect they have on restaurateurs' culinary ideals. It's a (relatively) serious topic, but one Dornenburg and Page address in a vibrant, conversational tone. Thanks to the unexpectedly dramatic lives of the characters involved, the pages buzz with often surprising tension, humor and emotion. Readers hear from restaurateurs who have staked fortunes on a creative vision, only to find that success often rests in the hands of a single, highly opinionated, sometimes unpredictable writer. The critics, meanwhile (most notably the New York Times's Ruth Reichl, teasingly shown on the cover wearing a face-obscuring hat), don wigs to maintain anonymity, fend off attacks from knife-wielding chefs and eat such dubious delicacies as braised goat penis and worms fried in lard. After being regaled with so many tart and entertaining observations, the final 100 service-oriented pages (Internet review sites, critics' favorite restaurants in selected cities) are somewhat anticlimactic. But just treat them like the after-dinner mint and the rest of the meal will get high marks for its appealing presentation, spice and color. 50 photos.

From Library Journal
Dornenburg and Page, coauthors of the award-winning Becoming a Chef (LJ 8/95) and Culinary Artistry (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1996), move out of the kitchen and into the dining room, focusing on the restaurant critics whose opinions often determine where we dine on Friday night. While the authors demonstrate the same incisive culinary qualities as in their previous works, chapters and numerous sidebars on such topics such as "Cooking for Ruth Reichl" and spending a week in the restaurant lives of both Reichl and Gael Greene will hold little appeal for readers who aren't hard-core foodies. Mostly, the book presents food critics' comments about the review process as well as opinions from chefs and restaurateurs about the people who review them; like the Zagat guides, everyone gets to be a critic here. The book ends with a list of the top critics' favorite restaurants, a guide to restaurant review sources on the Internet, and biographies of interviewees, all fairly sugarcoated. Recommended only for specialized culinary collections due to some in-depth reporting and interviews with a few restaurant notables. Otherwise, "Where's the beef?"ADrew Ackers, New York

Finding the Good Things in the Mixed Buffet
By Coco Pazzo
There is a lot to like about this book-- if you can find it! Between layout, verbiage, and sidebars, there is no flow of language at all-- this is simply a huge buffet of interviews roughly (emphasis on "roughly") organized along thematic lines. The text may be interrupted by two of three pages of a topical commentary by another critic or restaurateur; long quotations related to the topic may be found in the margins; thumbnail reviews of some restaurants in some cities may be found in the back.
But curiously, for a book that wants to explore the role, place, function, and substance of the food critic in our society, this book fails to offer many examples of "good criticism." For instance, we learn that other critics love the writing of Gael Greene or Ruth Reichl, but we are not given excerpts from their supposedly noteworthy reviews. Instead, what we have is a real mishmash of text that appears to be the result of standard interviews, cut and pasted into wherever the editors feel it fits. That's three stars... as in average. With higher expectations. Oh well, as Johann Killeen of Al Forno in Providence, RI, says, "any publicity is good publicity."
True for Al Forno; less so for this book.

Illuminating and entertaining, with more drama than opera!
By A Customer
As someone who follows the restaurant scene with the same level of enthusiasm that some teenagers follow Jessica Simpson, I got caught up with all the brouhaha around the debut of the new New York Times restaurant critic Frank Bruni. This got me curious about restaurant critics and their methods and whether anyone had ever studied the subject, which led me to the one-of-a-kind book Dining Out by Dornenburg and Page. I found it incredibly illuminating, not to mention entertaining. The authors dissect every detail of how reviews are written and stars awarded, based on interviews with leading food critics such as Tom Sietsema (now of The Washington Post), S. Irene Virbila (of The Los Angeles Times), and Dennis Ray Wheaton (of Chicago Magazine). They also interview leading chefs and restaurateurs about their views on critics and the power of the press. I've come to learn that there is as much or more drama in the world of restaurants as there is in opera! This book even breaks down what it took to get a four-star review when former restaurant reviewer Ruth Reichl was at the helm.
Every discerning diner should read this book for an eye-opening look at the state of contemporary restaurant criticism, not to mention a tasty behind-the-scenes read about some of the country's best restaurants (including the rise and fall and rise again of New York's own Chanterelle restaurant, which just won Restaurant of the Year at this year's James Beard Foundation Awards).
