ISP Survival Guide: Strategies for Running a Competitive ISP, by Geoff Huston

Introducing the ISP bible for the networking and telecomm industry.

To put it mildly, cyberspace business is booming. There are presently more than 6,000 Internet Service Providers worldwide, and about 600 new providers are springing up each quarter. However, the ISP business is still very young and without precedent-no how-to manual or foolproof start-up recipe exists for those who want a piece of the action. As ISPs mount an ambitious challenge against phone companies for control of the $300 billion telecommunications market, they need a step-by-step planning guide to creating, developing, and profiting from a solid service provider business. Networking pioneer Geoff Huston describes the technologies, business practices, and policies required to be a formidable player in the ISP business, covering architecture principles, network management, infrastructure, business models, public policy, future growth, and much more.

ISP (Internet Service Provider) companies provide access for end-users to the Internet. ISPs range from small, regional providers to larger, well-known companies like America Online and Sprint.

The Wiley Networking Council's mission is to fill an important gap in networking literature by publishing books that put technology into perspective for decision makers who need an implementation strategy, a vendor and outsourcing strategy, and a product and design strategy. It is comprised of four of the most influential leaders of the networking community:

Lyman Chapin: Founding trustee of the Internet Society; chief scientist of BBN, a division of GTE Internetworking.

Scott Bradner: Trustee of the Internet Society; Director of the Harvard University Network Switching Test Lab; Network World columnist.

Vinton Cerf: Founding trustee of the Internet Society, often called the "Father of the Internet;" Senior Vice President, MCI/WorldCom.

Ed Kozel: CTO and Senior VP for Product Development, Cisco Corporation,

Amazon.com Review
Running a successful Internet Service Provider (ISP) requires excellence in many areas. Good ISPs must keep on top of all the technical issues involved in high-traffic Internet connectivity. They must deal with the public, including its most technically incompetent segments. On top of all that, they have to make a profit in a competitive business environment. ISP Survival Guide does a good job of explaining all sides of the industry.

Rather than tie his book to the specifics of particular hardware and software products, Geoff Huston explains ISP technologies without implementation details. He writes at great length about the various interior and exterior routing protocols without mentioning specific products. He also covers the pros and cons of various data-transmission technologies, including ATM, ISDN, Frame Relay, and other systems, in addition to analog modems. Huston pays attention to quality of service issues--a subject that is not well covered elsewhere.

ISP Survival Guide also provides insight into the business aspects of running an ISP. Huston provides specific dollar figures that you can use to estimate capital equipment purchase costs and per-account annual maintenance costs. The book also contains advice on doing business with other providers that you're connecting to. --David Wall

Good outline, but a mediocre execution.
By J. G. Heiser
This book succeeds as a handbook--it is truly comprehensive. Unfortunately, it lacks depth in virtually every topic, and the writing is unacceptable--where was the editor?
Anyone in a management position within an ISP--or consulting for one--will be most effective in their job if they are familiar with the material in this book. Starting with the history of the Internet, it zips through a quick introduction of TCP/IP and immediately becomes bogged down in an interminably long and obtuse discussion of routing (Perlman is both easier to read and more detailed). A tortuous 45 page discussion of VPNs concludes with a terse and useful 8-word definition.
In spite of its flaws, it manages to at least touch on telecom technology, QoS, security, the role of the Internet authorities, and relationships between ISPs. The majority of ISP product offerings are discussed, and it includes a lengthy discussion of ISP business models. Everything is here but marketing, which is covered in a different Wiley text.
The book tries to be all things to all people, but specialists in any of the areas discussed, from technology to business, could find a better, more specific source, and it could easily be half this length without losing any information. A usable handbook would be twice this size, and half as prolix. Until such a text exists, I reluctantly recommend this one. Skim it if you have to, but if you work in the business you should be familiar with everything in this book.

Good, but I have some advice for the author
By A Customer
I'm about half way through this book. I am also a computer book writer and I bought this because I wanted to get into the head of someone who set up and ran and ISP. The book has excellent content. But I have some advice for the author:
Stop with these long-winded sentences. I know you are from a different country where writing in the "pompous" style of English is probably acceptable, but please just try to get to the point. These sentences that go on about the importance of this and that both before and after you say it are unnecessary. As we say here in America, "just give me the beef."
Unfortunately, many readers feel they must read every word to get your point. But then after trudging through some of these heavily worded paragraphs, I am left wondering "what's the point?" The wording is so complex in some cases that you really can't skim through paragraphs to find the most important stuff. Here's an example from page 29 (I picked this at random and "voiced" it in):
"This hybrid model of the core academic and research network with a central funding component providing free service and an associated fee-based commercially oriented resale operation was a common phase at this point in the evolutionary path. The resale operation was typically constructed so as to enable structural cross-subsidization of the cost of providing service to the core academic and research constituency. This cross-subsidization, together with access to increasing economies of scale in transmission cost, enable the network to undertake the seemingly impossible: to continue to grow at rates that were exponential, so that usage doubled in 8-to-12-month intervals, while exposing the academic and research institutional members of the network to no cost increase, or, at worst, linear cost increases."
I think what the author meant to say was:
"A centrally funded network that was able to resell its bandwidth and services helped the Internet grow. At the same time, the resale of bandwidth helped to subsidize other services."
OK, maybe that is not the best rewrite. I know there are some important concepts buried in the original paragraph. How about putting those in a quick bullet list so we can get the point and move on?
Like I said, this is an excellent book with great content. I'm writing this because I hope it helps the author with future books, which I am looking forward to reading.

Simply outstanding value...
By Max Grenkowitz
This book is a must if you want to set-up, maintain and survive with an ISP business and success in mind. I was in the process of setting up a ISP business and desperately looking for some advice, insight, requirements, and the lot.
When I started reading this book I was overwhelmed by the amount of information... it seemed all to long to get anywhere... I started skipping pages, sections, chapters until I realised how valuable the contents was. Back to the beginning and I started all over again, reading this book... thoroughly. I've read it twice in meantime and parts of it repeatedly over the one year since I've got this book.
It is still (and of course) possible to take the cowboy approach, considering the modem-ratio as the 'holy' figure which does it all for you, and jump into it... believe it or not, you will realise sooner than you may be pleased or anticipate, that you find yourself in critical situations, capacity-wise, service-wise. You could have had avoided it all by doing your homework... part of it would be reading this book, which gives you all the information to base your decision-making process on.
We have setup quickly some LINUX boxes, Apache, RADIUS, sendmail over a period of one week, started quickly and grew faster than expected... and retreated!, to prevent to go down, due to the lack of policies, procedures, and man-power required despite the capability of high-automation... we have been warned ;-)
You may think this book is for the big guys, you are wrong... you either have to understand what you are getting yourself into, you have to know the game or someone who knows it... this book will help you understand the game. It inspired me to go for further more in-depth training (currently persuing my CCNP certification).
I'm happy with the style of writing, academic, accurate, including the background and the history to understand the Internet's constant and sometimes rapid change... IPv6 is to 'released' in six months... nevertheless, I was a bit surprised about the lengthiness of some sentences, which I believed are more a custom of Germans (like myself)...
If you really want to know what's going on or what to expect, this is it! It is for the serious reader, it is not a "for Dummies" edition... or have you ever wondered what makes the difference between (say) Excel in 12 hours compared to Using Excel on 900 pages!
Enjoy... I can only recommend it.

From the Back Cover
At last, a balanced approach to data warehousing that leverages the techniques pioneered by Ralph Kimball and Bill Inmon

Since its groundbreaking inception, the approach to understanding data warehousing has been split into two mindsets: Ralph Kimball, who pioneered the use of dimensional modeling techniques for building the data warehouse, and Bill Inmon, who introduced the Corporate Information Factory and leads those who believe in using relational modeling techniques for the data warehouse. Mastering Data Warehouse Design successfully merges Inmon’s data ware- house design philosophies with Kimball’s data mart design philosophies to provide you with a compelling and complete overview of exactly what is involved in designing and building a sustainable and extensible data warehouse.

Most data warehouse managers, designers, and developers are familiar with the open letter written by Ralph Kimball in 2001 to the data warehouse community in which he challenged those in the Inmon camp to answer some tough questions about the effectiveness of the relational approach. Cowritten by one of the best-known experts of the Inmon approach, Claudia Imhoff, this team of authors addresses head-on the challenging questions raised by Kimball in his letter and offers a how-to guide on the appropriate use of both relational and dimensional modeling in a comprehensive business intelligence environment. In addition, you’ll learn the authors’ take on issues such as:

  • Which approach has been found most successful in data warehouse environments at companies spanning virtually all major industrial sectors
  • The pros and cons of relational vs. dimensional modeling techniques so developers can decide on the best approach for their projects
  • Why the architecture should include a data warehouse built on relational data modeling concepts
  • The construction and utilization of keys, the historical nature of the data warehouse, hierarchies, and transactional data
  • Technical issues needed to ensure that the data warehouse design meets appropriate performance expectations
  • Relational modeling techniques for ensuring optimum data warehouse performance and handling changes to data over time

Not worth the money
By Boris Chang
I've been to seminars by Inmon, Kimball and Imhoff, as well as read many of their books. Kimball on the one hand, is generally clear and concise on the subject and obviously understands not only DW design and implementation concepts, but how they relate to various businesses and how the business really uses the data. He's also a fairly humble man in person.

Both Inmon and Imhoff on the other hand are rather self-aggrandizing (Inmon once waltzed into one of his keynote speeches dressed like a boxer to the theme from Rocky!), and both Inmon and Imhoff seem to have based their careers around bashing Kimball. In their desperation to present an alternative to Kimball's methodology and carve out their own niche, they've presented mostly incoherent, illogical and unusable ideas sometimes laced with anti-Kimball baggage. I get the feeling Inmon is kind of like James Martin was back in the 80's, churning out countless cookie-cutter style books of dubious quality.

I've designed a number of dimensional data warehouses and data marts that actually work years later using the Kimball approach, but honestly, every book I've read by Inmon and/or Imhoff has left me wondering who in the world actually uses their approach (if you can call it that) to build real-world data warehouses.

If you want to have a complete library and money is no object, by all means, read everyone's ideas on data warehousing and compare and contrast for yourself (I did - I must own fifty books on the subject - but I rely on only about 5-6 books in my day to day work as a DW architect - the rest are just taking up shelf space and reminding me how nice it is to be able to read reviews at places like Amazon before you buy). If money is an object and/or you are just starting out in the field and trying to learn the basics of DW design, do yourself a big favor and get the three excellent Kimball books (The Data Warehouse Toolkit, The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit and The Data Warehouse ETL Toolkit). The Adamson/Venerable book: Data Warehouse Design Solutions is a very useful adjunct for additional examples of real-world dimensional designs.

What's the message?
By Charles Hooper
A few random comments....
*The back cover says it "addresses head-on" the issues from Ralph's famous letter. I'm familiar with that letter. Either I skimmed over a couple pages too fast - and those pages had some "answer" buried in them, or, they did not really, fully, address many of the issues Ralph wrote about.
*I kept getting confused - some times the book acted like it loved a synergy and partnership between the normalized and the dimensional approaches. Other it seemed to slam the dimensional approach as not working in many areas. In particular, I was shocked at the paragraph in the center of page 386. I've had no problem, using what may appear to be unrelated star schema data, in doing significant analysis and data mining.
*The paragraph on page 394, under "Flexibility", says I can't do sophisticated or advanced analytics from my star schemas. I have. What am I (or, the authors) missing?
*Chapter 6 - Modeling the Calendar... I feel for anyone new to this arena trying to decipher the information. I have no problems with my date or time dimensions and I can explain them to my students in a lot less time than it took me to read that chapter!
*Chapter 7 - Modeling Hierarchies... Seemed a little long. I should not comment on it - when I finished reading it, I realized I had been sleeping through most of it.
*I found the chart on page 100 a little scary - do they really mix the facts in a fact table? The chart shows sales and sales objectives in the same fact table. Is this just a "logical" star? Or, is their basic understanding of the dimensional model in need of an upgrade?
*Not enough real world "how-to" examples.
*Again, either I skimmed a few pages, or, they refer to "we'll address this in a later chapter" a few times and never did.
*I don't know the authors - did not have any pre-conceived opinions about them. Now, I felt like, as a team, they did not always agree on what to write, so they compromised - picked middle ground and sent inconsistent messages. I finished the book with a very unclear picture of what message they were sending.
*Too much extraneous data in many of the examples - tough to weed out the needed from the excess...
*I won't argue with the overall concept of a staging area/data warehouse/data mart philosophy. I do take exception to the inference that I cannot be successful if I don't follow it. I've implemented using that model and variations of the approach, as well as taking real-time transactional data directly into a star.
Final thought. In my experience, anyone taking this book as an "absolute" will spend more time on I/T "stuff" than the users I know will want to put up with. Fifty-some years ago, Aritotle Onasis said the secret of business is in knowing something that no one else knows. That is no longer a reality. This is called the "information age" for a reason. The winners are those that realize they know no more than their competition, but do more, faster, with what they have. In my version of the "real world", executives want results, NOW. I did not feel the authors ever had to deal with "urgency".

Misinformation And Missing The Mark
By JP O'Connor
If you want to build a Corporate Information Factory (CIF) I suppose this book is better than many of the previous attempts at teaching how to accomplish that goal. However, like many of the previous Inmon/Imhoff books, there is too much theory (unfocused at that) and not nearly enough practical/tactical content. If you are on the CIF bandwagon however, you will find the book very helpful as compared to most of the previous books on the topic.
But that begs the question. Many a CIF or enterprise-wide project has been launched... yet most are cancelled long before reaching the finish line. This is reality. In the REAL world we have REAL deadlines and REAL budgets imposed by REAL business executives who have REAL problems to solve and it involves... oh by the way... REAL MONEY!
We have to deliver NOW! Well, ok, maybe not quite that fast, but you get the idea. The hard part is getting the data! Or is it? Using simple tools and a powerfully designed, highly detailed dimensional database, we have, for example, clients pulling their own data sets ready for import into statistical and mining packages. They think they have died and gone to heaven!
Foist a third normal form (3NF) design on them and their eyes roll... "Now, which of the available join paths is the right one for this business question?" and "Why is it taking so long for the query?" and "Will you pull the data for me?" Now we hear... "Instead of spending 80% or 90% of my time getting the data prepared, I spend 5% or 10% of my time doing that... so I have that much more time to actually think about the business." We have seen clients' ability to understand and drive their business expand beyond their own wildest imagination in very short order. It shows on their bottom line and they are very happy with that!
The whole point of BI - beyond all the data capture and cleaning and integrating and turning "data into knowledge", and making it easy for the user without dumbing it down, and all that stuff - the point of BI can be distilled down to one word: "Publish!" Booksellers don't hand you a photocopy of a handwritten manuscript. They do a lot of work with the "raw data" - typesetting and page numbers and table of contents and indexing and so on - and turn it into something accessible and useable... something we call a book. That's the point of BI. This book doesn't get it.
Too many CIF or "enterprise" projects have imploded under their own weight to slavishly duplicate the same mistakes. Too many dimensional systems have succeeded with huge return on investment to relegate the ideas to a dark corner.
If we stop the religious discussions (Mac vs. Windows, or the "Inmonites vs the Kimballites") and get to see how truly successful Business Intelligence (BI) systems work, we find the emphasis must be on using proper theory (not arguing it) and applying techniques that work NOW. More often than not, can you say "Dimensional!" Yes, CIF and all that has its place... but not nearly to the degree that this book would have you believe. The most successful clients have been the ones who bypassed all the "modeling wars" and used the data bus architecture of conformed dimensions. They didn't pick and chose a modeling idea or two; they actually studied Kimball and did it the right way. Dr. Codd, while addressing this question one day, asked me this question: "Would you run an OLTP system against a dimensional model?" My obvious answer was: "Of course not." "Why then," he asked, "do so many people try to do the opposite?"
The biggest "problem" with the dimensional approach is that people who do not truly understand it try to pick and chose techniques from it and graft those into their current ways... and fail... and bash it. Or, they don't understand it at all. Uh, sorry, it isn't the technique that is the problem.
The book purports to "answer" a message reply that Ralph Kimball posted on a discussion board some time ago. It does not. One can be certain that Ralph Kimball did not give permission to use his name on or in the book, as is done. Instead, the book does a very poor job of showing how to design and use dimensionally designed databases as a part of a larger architecture, illustrates a complete lack of understanding of the underlying principles, and then criticizes and limits the technique and its application. This does a terrible disservice to the reader... especially a reader who is trying to decide how to meet a real business need and is new to BI. I dislike speaking impolitely like this, but the truth is more important in this context. Also, on the back cover, they state that Ralph Kimball's "letter" was a challenge. It was not. It was merely a listing of many of the crucial issues in a useful BI environment addressed to an individual who had asked legitimate questions about BI. As for addressing these issues "head-on", the book does not do this at all.
Does this matter?
Of course it does. Real people buy this book and are led down a path that rarely leads to success. I realize that much of this review is not directly about specific details of the book. The details in the book are inconsistent, often unfocused, and sometimes downright misleading. The larger issue, and thus the focus of this review, is that the entire book is based on a premise that the CIF is "The Way" and that dependent dimensional data marts are grudgingly "ok". This is not the reality that many of us see in the business and education worlds.

Two-Phase Flow in Complex Systems, by Salomon Levy

The first comprehensive, real-world look at two-phase flow systems-from one of the world's leading authorities on the subject.

From his early works in the area of heat transfer research on boundary layer flows and two-phase flows to his role as one of the lead consultants following the Three Mile Island accident, internationally renowned engineer Salomon Levy has achieved an ideal balance of theory and practice in his engineering career. In Two-Phase Flow in Complex Systems, Dr. Levy's newest book, he draws on this breadth of experience to examine these systems in the real world.

Two-Phase Flow in Complex Systems offers a unique look at two-phase flow phenomena (primarily gas and liquid) in a variety of systems, from water reactors to the global climate system. Focusing on the interaction and simultaneous behavior of all the components in a system, the book's approach departs significantly from conventional texts, which emphasize modeling of separate phenomena. The book begins with the formulation of an integrated program of experiments and analytical tools, and describes experimental aspects-specifically the scaling of test facilities-essential to representing the critical elements of the behavior of complex systems. Subsequent chapters:
* Discuss system computer codes for predicting system behavior during transients and accidents.
* Examine flow pattern maps and flow pattern models.
* Describe typical limiting phenomena known to impact the safety and cost of complex systems (including countercurrent limiting conditions and critical or choking flow).

The book also illustrates how the analysis used in understanding the dynamics of a nuclear power system can be applied to the entire global climate system, including the phenomenon of global warming.

Phenomena under the mask
By A Customer
This is a comprehensive and timely text on multiphase flow and heat transfer for a nuclear engineer and those who are interested in nuclear reactor safety assessment, to have a picture of what may be happending in nuclear power plants under accident conditions, including hypothetical core meltdown situations. It is helpful since a majority of those who run reactor-safety computer codes do not have good grip on phenomenological understanding and models which formed the backbone of these codes. With respect to severe accidents, the author made a terrific attempt to go beyond the mundane of empiricism, but phenomena are too complex and there are too large uncertainties that somehow reduces the value of detailed modeling of particular processes. Knowledge gained to date in simulant-materials and small-scale experiments not necessarily provides the adequate picture of what could happen in reality.Especially since in most cases, measurements were indirect and models are speculative. Therefore a sense of caution is recommended to look behind equations and aware of where and how they were derived or conditions in which correlations were obtained.

From the Inside Flap
STATE-OF-THE-PRACTICE RISK MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES

Risk management plays an increasingly important role in the life of financial institutions. Yet there have been virtually no texts to date that reconcile practical market experience and scientific discipline in an attempt to help portfolio and risk managers make better investment decisions-until now.

Written by two senior risk management practitioners of a global money management and risk advisory firm, this one-of-a-kind book utilizes an intriguing blend of finance, economics, mathematics, and common sense in applying cutting-edge financial modeling techniques to managing risk in fixed income markets. With a focus on both theoretical and practical considerations, a variety of existing and new approaches are brought together in a thorough but easy-to-understand fashion, including:
* Interest rate and basis risk durations
* Scenario analysis
* Expected rate of return
* Principal components analysis
* Value-at-Risk
* Stress testing
* Portfolio and hedge optimizations

As a growing proportion of the financial system adopts rigorous risk management techniques and incorporates them in making investment decisions, chief investment officers, corporate treasurers, portfolio managers, risk managers, traders, academics, and finance students will find Risk Management an invaluable tool in navigating this exciting and increasingly challenging dimension of investing.

A very interesting book covering most modern issues in Fixed Income risk management. This book represents a rich experience that the authors got in finance and especially in mamanging risk of bond (and similar instruments) portfolio.
I especiallly like the expalnations of partial duration and key rate versus principal components analisys.
The book is technical and oriented towards people implementing modern risk management based on the P&L probability distribution.
I have also learned a few interesting ways of how to communicate quantative results of risk analysis to portfolio managers.
Monte Carlo methods are explained in brief and probably will not satisfy an experience user.
Various option adjusted spread methods are explained very nicely. Benchmark approach is another topic that is well expalined in this book.
I am going to use this book for teaching a Risk Management course (MBA).

Excellent Book
By Drew Saylor
A truly excellent and useful book, although I can see why uninitiated (like Ms. Jane in the review below) won't understand it. The authors possess a wealth of practical knowledge of the fixed income markets and analytics. They rely on both theoretical models and subjective judgement, without which no investment activity can be successful. Their ideas are innovative and rigorous. I especially liked discussions on Value-at-Risk and existing parametric measures of risk. Highly recommend!

Disappointing
By Jane Marsh
This book could be excellent. The table of contents offers an appealing mix of important topics. The writing is clear. Unfortunately, the authors don't know their subject. They are a couple of buy-side professionals who know the lingo but not the mathematics that goes behind it. They think that assets are priced based upon expectations, which is precisely the notion Black and Scholes dispensed with in 1973. In their discussion of OAS, they claim that option spreads reflect risk premiums. No, they reflect the cost of maintaining a replicating portfolio. What is really startling is their misperceptions regarding principal components. Applying PCA to yield curve modeling, they have invented a concept of "Most Representative Shock." This will make your eyes roll back into your head.
I wish I could give a better review. I really had great expectations when I ordered this book, and it is clear the authors have put a lot of effort into their writing. They simply lack the expertise to make a substantive contribution.

"Just when you thought all the angles on management had been tackled, along comes THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND YOUR BUSINESS. This is the first book to address everyday business ethics and their powerful potential for disaster or triumph. Shaped as much by Seglin's expertise as by business readers' responses to his 'Black and White' column in Inc., this book will change the way you make business decisions."-George Gendron, Editor-in-Chief, Inc. magazine

"The human imagination has always been challenged and moved through compelling stories. Jeffrey Seglin's book is brimming with real stories, provocative dilemmas, and authentic perspectives." -Pierre Ferrari, Board Member, Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Inc.

"Jeff Seglin has written a book that will instantly be the standard against which all discussions of ethics in the workplace will be compared. With the skill of a neurosurgeon and the studied neutrality of a Freudian psychoanalyst, Seglin guides readers to a spot squarely between the horns of those ethical dilemmas that are of greatest concern to business people and does just what he should....let's you sit there and struggle with the evidence and analysis by yourself. Amazingly, Seglin never moralizes, sermonizes, or imposes any judgmental guidance. Instead, he has created a page turner on a subject with a well deserved reputation for demagoguery and pedantry. No professional who has --or longs for-- a conscience can ignore this book." -Dr. Steven Berglas, Lecturer, Harvard Medical School, Instructor, Anderson School of Management, UCLA, and Inc. columnist

"The Good, the Bad and Your Business offers us something rarely found in business ethics: a presentation that pulls the reader into the reality of managerial decision-making. It is a world where ethics counts for everything but the ethical trigger points are entangled in people issues, time pressures, financial urgency and simple avoidance of uncomfortable choices. Seglin's informed and sensitive treatment leads us through these obstacles toward a path of open dialogue and honest questioning. In an increasingly complex and networked business culture, such road maps to ethics are a navigational must"-Laura Nash, Director, Institute for Values-Centered Leadership, Harvard Divinity School

Right action is smart business
By A Customer
Amazingly helpful in providing a common-sense framework for working out answers to the most difficult kinds of business problems--the ones that can eat at you for a long time after. Packed with great case studies that make it clear that all managers in all sorts of businesses face ethical dilemmas all the time, whether they want to admit to themselves or not. The real trick this book pulls off is keeping things at a concrete, practical, hands-on business level without shrugging off the bigger view. No one's lecturing you here; this is about real business, not abstractions. I got something hugely important out of it that will always stay with me: In the long run, doing the right thing is not only admirable in and of itself, but it's usually good business. I always wanted to believe that, but suspected it wasn't so. Now I'm confident that it is.

A sound practical guide
By Bill Godfrey
Written well before the Enron affair focused people's minds on the ethical behaviour of large business, this book seeks to provide a simple and approachable guide to recognizing and thinking through the ethical dilemmas that everyone in business faces - the first step in which is to recognize that there is an ethical issue in a particular situation.
It is likely to appeal to people who are interested in these questions and want a practical rather than a theoretical or philosophical treatment of the subject.
A major part of the author's thesis is that ethical issues tend to be 'fuzzy', often present themselves as a complication to a difficult and even financially dangerous situation, and there is a mythology that ethics necessarily involves pain and suffering - and is damaging to business profitability. As a result these issues are often not recognized, discussed or addressed.
The book is written in the context of the explosion in litigation, which both confuses the distinction between ethics and legality and can also constrain ethical behaviour through fear of litigation - as recent experience with various churches has demonstrated. Its three parts - Money, People, and The Common Good - take common examples from each arena in order to help the business reader find ways of addressing these issues and continue to operate with due regard for profit but do so 'with an understanding of what we stand for in the way we make choices and decisions'.
In covering money, the author deals with issues such as the limits to monetary fiddling to ensure you can pay your payroll, the ethics of bankruptcy in the context of US law, what and when to disclose when a threatening situation arises. Chapter 4, How to Make a Decision When You Don't Know Enough, also contains some simple, even folksy, advice on how to check whether your decision is ethical.
The chapters on People include some extended discussion on the ethical failures of omission and commission that flow from fear of litigation - and the side effect of allowing ethical issues to be treated as purely legal questions to be decided by the lawyers rather than the managers. They also discuss the establishment of an ethical working environment and the limits to the help to be given when an employee encounters personal problems
The chapters on The Common Good go into the murky dividing line between (arguably legitimate) posturing, spin-doctoring and concealment and outright lying and spying. This is written from the point of view of the individual in business. It is a valid perspective, but does not provide coverage of the systemic impact on business - and indeed politics and governance - of the progressive debasement of the ethical coinage that flows from acceptance of these not quite dishonest practices.

Wrestling with the Balance Between Ethics and Self-Interest
By Robert Hoyk
The Good, The Bad, and Your Business is a generous gift to readers: articulate, thought provoking and lucid. The writing style is congruent with the author's message. Seglin gives the reader a flexible, yet coherent language to structure discussion and contemplation of ethical dilemmas.
The examples in the book foster identification with business executives who face brutal decisions and lure the reader into sympathizing with their behavior. Only later when the author shifts to the divergent view of the victim, does the reader clearly acknowledge the executive's behavior-with a shock-as being unethical.
The book awakens us to the process of how we can let legal parameters and legal experts shut down our awareness of good ethics. It highlights the importance of breaking the bonds of legal fear to create greater employee satisfaction that in turn leads to better employee performance.
Seglin takes a realistic view of how success is affected by dishonesty and astutely concludes that overall, it "just isn't worth the risk."
The Good, The Bad, and Your Business, displays a compassion for being human in an imperfect world while maintaining laser alertness and wrestling with the balance between altruism and self-interest. Seglin is not hesitant about diving into the trenches but can also climb with conviction to the pinnacle of "Postconventional Morality."
