The book to read for an in-depth background
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
This book is a very complete overview of molecular biology as applied to human genetics. As someone interested in bioinformatics and computational biology, I read it to get a background in the biology/genetics behind these fields. That being said, I was glad I made the choice of this book as the authors do a fine job of explaining the relevant concepts and biological processes in genetics. In the light of the recent draft of the human genome, this edition of the book is especially timely. That being said, there is a lot of material covered, and to digest all of the terms and processes outlined takes a fair amount of time. The discussion on functional genomics and the post-genome sequencing era was particularly interesting. More could be said on gene sequencing validation as it applies to gene therapies and drug discovery. The most fascinating chapter was the one on genetic manipulation of animals as this is where genetic engineering has had its successful proving ground. Even though this is a science text, a discussion on the ethics of human genetic engineering would be appropriate, given some of the current attitudes about it. My opinion is that these technologies should move ahead with diligence; humankind cannot afford not to do so.
I would highly recommend this book to those who have the time to read through it, as it offers the necessary concepts needed to understand this fascinating area.

Excellent for the working student!
By Vince
Being a graduate student in human genetics I was looking long and hard for a comprehensive text on how and why experiment are done in the lab, and the scientific basis for these experiments. This book is the closest one I have seen that accomplishes all these goals. It is a little light on the theoretical side of genetics (e.g. Mendelian etc); however, there are many other texts out there that can substitute for this flaw, but only a few that do what this one does. I recommend this book for students who are familiar with genetics but need to understand the practical side to it.

a good book, but...
By Alessio D'Ascenzo
This book is enough simple. Chapters regarding the POSITIONAL CLONING, the HYBRIDIZATION, the IMPRINTING and the GENETICAL MAPPAGE are really clear and they represent a big aid for students in the comprehension of these procedures which could be very difficult. But... chapters about GENETICAL DISEAES are too much treated than chapters regarding FORMAL GENETICS, moreover FISICAL MAPPAGE chapter is too detailled in pratical explanation, while the real mappege's concept is not focalized. To conclude a good book, but ... cheers ALESSIO & FEDERICO

Co-Leaders: The Power of Great Partnerships, by David A. Heenan, Warren Bennis

"Co-leadership...is a tough-minded strategy that will unleash the hidden talent in any enterprise. Above all, co-leadership is inclusive, not exclusive. It celebrates those who do the real work, not just a few charismatic often isolated leaders who are regally compensated for articulating the organization's vision." -David A. Heenan and Warren Bennis

Today's heads of big companies are as recognizable to us as the most popular entertainers or sports stars, but the heart and soul of every organization are those leaders below the CEO. Today's celebrity CEO has become either a figure head or an egomaniac, and often too public a personality to get the real work done. That work is done instead by teams of leaders-exceptional deputies who forge great partnerships to maximize both organizational and personal success.

Heenan and Bennis believe we must look beyond the Bill Gateses of the world to understand what makes an organization excel. Written for CEOs, managers, and anyone else interested in modern organizations, this is the first comprehensive study of co-leaders and their often quiet power. Exhaustively researched and illustrated with memorable anecdotes and lively stories, Co-Leaders examines a dozen great partners such as Steve Ballmer of Microsoft, Bob Lutz of Chrysler, Bill Guthridge, coach of the University of North Carolina basketball team, and Anne Sullivan Macy, Helen Keller's teacher.

The changing nature of corporate leadership has seen the emergence of a new Silicon Valley model of success, where boss and subordinate seem more like peers with the spotlight on great partnerships. Talent, not title, is the source of power at a growing number of hot high-tech companies. In these collegial, non-hierarchical organizations, today's deputy can become tomorrow's CEO simply by taking his or her breakthrough idea and walking out the door. Good ideas belong, initially at least, to the people who have them, not to the company and not to the boss which is why this new egalitarianism isn't just a matter of style-it's a question of survival. Co-leaders know both the executive and subordinate experience, making them better adapted to the needs of the new millennium where men and women who can command and follow will prove to be the greatest assets of any organization.

Co-Leaders is intended for everyone who aspires to make his or her organization great. By showing the enterprise through the eyes of inspired deputies, this book reveals how both organizations and individuals can benefit from a more inclusive, less celebrity-oriented definition of leadership. This groundbreaking book argues for a new paradigm: gifted leaders and their talented co-leaders working together to make their organizations stronger, more nimble, more equitable...and ultimately more successful.

David A. Heenan is a trustee of the Estate of James Campbell, one of the nation's largest landowners with assets valued at over $2 billion. A former senior executive with Citicorp and Jardine Matheson, Heenan has served on the faculties of the Wharton School and the Columbia Graduate School of Business. A Wharton Ph.D., he is the author of The New Corporate Frontier and The Re-United States of America, and his articles have appeared in the Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.

Warren Bennis is Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern California and a consultant to multinational companies and governments throughout the world. Often referred to as "the guru of modern management," he is one of the preeminent authorities on leadership. Author of over a dozen books, including the best-sellers Leaders and On Becoming a Leader, Bennis's insights have fundamentally shaped the way we think about leaders today.

Amazon.com Review
Behind each good CEO, head coach, and general, there's a number-two person who is supremely capable and yet either shuns the spotlight or is willing to wait patiently for his or her turn. Heenan and Bennis take a thorough look at the contributions of these number twos, finding brilliance and dogged determination--qualities the financial press traditionally finds only in bosses--but also the humility and loyalty necessary to remain second banana.

Although the authors refer to almost every professional marriage you can think of--from Abbott and Costello to the short-lived duo of Ovitz and Eisner--the heart of the book focuses on 11 genuine successes in the annals of number-twodom.

The chapter on Al Gore contains an interesting dissection of the role of the VP in American politics. A chapter called "Cyberstars" talks about how Intel's Craig Barrett and Microsoft's Steve Ballmer have contributed to the spectacular success of those companies. (Interesting tidbit: Ballmer once beat Bill Gates in a math competition when both were undergraduates at Harvard.) Bill Guthridge, an assistant basketball coach at the University of North Carolina who served under Dean Smith for 30 years before succeeding him, gets his due in a chapter that ably explains what an assistant coach actually does: it's a tough gig.

The point of the book is that all these fascinating lieutenants represent an argument for a newish type of power-sharing management. It's a strong argument, but it seems dependent on brilliant adjutants, and one senses there may not really be enough of those to go around. --Lou Schuler

The Right CEO and COO Pairings Can Accomplish More
By Donald Mitchell
The title of this book is a little misleading. I assumed that the book was about co-CEOs, something that is usually a disaster waiting to happen. In fact, the book is about partnerships of complementary talents where one person is willing to work hard out of the limelight. Not all of the examples are business examples either. The authors also look at Chairman Mao and Chou En-lai, President Truman and General Marshall, Bernice Pauahi Bishop and her husband, Charles Reed Bishop (founders of the Bishop Estate in Hawaii), Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan Macy, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, and two pairs of basketball coaches.
The book correctly points out that many leaders don't want (or cannot tolerate) having a powerful second-in-command. A COO is often a position created by the board to assist in a transition to picking a new CEO. If the old CEO can sabotage the COO, the old CEO may get to keep the job longer than planned. So what could be co-leadership often doesn't get off the ground. In fact, the COO job is often a dead-end for the inhabitant.
The advantage of the teams, when they work, is that much more can be accomplished by dividing tasks and by challenging each other's thinking so that better ideas are created and more mistakes avoided. The authors feel that every organization should have co-leaders. Frankly, that's unlikely to happen.
The book nicely summarizes 10 lessons for how co-leaders should operate and another 10 lessons for creating a co-leader environment. Most of these will seem like common sense to you, but they are worth considering.
My own research on CEOs shows that the number of roles they are expected to excel in continues to grow. On the other hand, those who are most successful year in and year out as CEOs usually have no co-leaders. They tend to operate with a top management team that more broadly shares the responsibilities and challenges. It would be interesting to put some quantitative measures on the co-leader concept to see how it performs compared to the alternatives.
The main benefit I got from the book was learning more about people who have toiled out of the limelight before becoming CEOs (and who made important contributions as COOs) like Craig Barrett at Intel and Steve Ballmer at Microsoft.
If you are thinking about having a COO or taking a COO job, this book is a must read!

Packed With Knowledge!
By Rolf Dobelli
Although the business press likes nothing more than the rise and fall of mighty corporate monarchs, authors David A. Heenan and Warren Bennis (co-leaders themselves, clearly) contend that today's most important management trend is the movement toward collaborative leadership. While it's become common wisdom that the lightening-fast pace of contemporary business demands more flexible command structures than traditional corporate hierarchies can provide, the cult of personality still dominates public perception. Heenan and Bennis present compelling theory as a basis for their co-leadership model, and reinforce their thinking with a string of examples of executive dynamic duos, like Gates/Ballmer, Grove/Barrett and Merrill/Smith. The case histories are not used to blindly buttress the authors' point, however. The bloody Eisner/Ovitz debacle at Disney is presented in gruesome detail, an apt illustration of the danger of ego in a collaborative age. We [...] recommend this book as required reading for any corporate executive.

So obvious as to be worthless
By 3rd Option
I'm a huge Bennis fan, but this is lame. A lot of stories that point to the obvious: if the #2 and #1 guy are going to work towards the same goal, they have to also work together while respecting each other's roles.

The last pages of "advice" are so obvious as to be worthless. Some obvious things need to be stated at times, not these.

The BEST Math Book You'll Ever Need
By Brandi Godfrey
This book can be used by anyone. If we had been taught to do math like this in school we would have all done a little bit better!!! This book broke everything down so anyone could understand the simple approach to mathamatics. It taught me things that I had forgotten and also helped me with things that I was never taught in school. I have never read a book like this.

I was sold when I read other review's. When I read the book I was still amazed at the simple detail that Steve Slavin provided throughout the entire book. We thank you for our NEW knowledge on math!!!!

great math review
By A Customer
This book is for anyone who needs to brush up on their math skills and for anyone with dyscalculia or math disabilities. This book is a great review of "life math"--including how to calculate how much social security the government deducts from your paycheck and how to calculate tips and sales percentages. Full chapters are devoted to personal finances, rate & time problems (like figuring gas mileage), and interest rates. Not too scary for math phobics and definitely useful.

Explanations are not good enough...
By Newmie the cat
...and there are certainly not enough excercises in the book to make sure all that knowledge will stick. I was very dissappointed by this book. I expected it to be much better; I've been out of high school for 15 years and was never any good at math to begin with but now I need to go to college so I had to start from rock bottom and work my way up. Initially I hardly used this book, because most of the time I did, I just got fustrated with it. The beginning (addition, subtraction, ect) is all right, that is why I gave 2 stars instead of 1 but that's about it. I think this book will suit people who had a previous strong foundation of math but they just haven't used it for a long time, then this book can serve as a refresher.

I didn't want to waste my money so I still made the book somewhat helpful. I bought another by Danica McKellar; Math doesn't suck and while it was written specifically for girls in elementary school, it can be very useful for grown ups too. I find her explanations much better. So I used her book to understand what was going on and completed the limited amount of excercises in All the math you'll ever need.
There might be other good basic math books out there besides Danica McKellar's and something directed toward grown ups too but I needed something good and fast NOW.

Probably the best basic technical analysis book I have read

This is a great book!
By Amazon Customer
I've been using technical analysis for over 5 years now, and I still found a lot of useful information in this book. What I found especially helpful was the discussion of different trendline patterns suchs as flags, pennants, and wedges. The most interesting chapter, without a doubt, is where Schwager shows you a graph of a stock or future, and tells you what he recommended (buy or sell short). The reader then agrees or disagrees with his assumption, and turns the page to see what happened. It was very informative, and shows that even the pros are wrong sometimes, and how they recover from it to limit their losses.

Good reference with case studies
By Adriano Ramos Passarelli
Hi! I have this book and think that it is a very very good book and very atualized about architetural acoustics because it brings not only the principles of acoustics but a lot of case studies of some famous places with ilustrations, wich are a good reference of the aplication of the design for a acoustical place. And brings too a section about the recent innovations in acoustical design and research. This book and David Egan's Architectural Acoustics makes a perfect couple for architects and other people who wants a good knowledge about acoustics in architecture. I really recommend.

Masters Student textbook
By Jared Bockoff
This book was so advanced and technical that it was almost entirely useless to me. It is clearly for an advanced sound technician, someone who is going to be building concert halls and what not. I was looking for something with information on building a sound studio for a client. Too technical, too advanced. If your teacher doesn't require it, why the hell would you buy it. I gave it a 2 because someone will make use out of it somehow, someday, somewhere...i guess.

You'll hear from Bernard Baruch on stock market slumps, Peter Bernstein on investing for the long term, Joseph E. Granville on market movements, John Moody on investment vs. speculation, Otto Kahn on the New York Stock Exchange and public opinion, William Peter Hamilton on the Dow theory, and Leo Melamed on the art of futures trading, to name just a few.

For easy reference, the 46 essays featured in The Book of Investing Wisdom are organized into eight categories, covering the nuts and bolts of analysis, investing attitude and philosophy, investing strategies, market cycles, views from the inside, lessons from notorious characters, insights from the Great Crashes, and advice beyond your average blue chip. Each essay is preceded by a brief introduction that provides intriguing and insightful background information about its author's life and career, and places the essay in historical perspective. Significant statements, inspiring thoughts, and even quirky bits of wisdom have been highlighted throughout the book to call attention to each contributor's most memorable ideas.

Offering practical advice, strategic wisdom, and intriguing history, The Book of Investing Wisdom will inspire and motivate everyone from the professional money manager to the do-it-yourself investor to the business student.

Amazon.com Review
When the stock market booms--as it did through most of the 1990s--relatively inexperienced investors like to believe there's a new paradigm at work. That's why it's refreshing to take a look occasionally at how investors survived previous booms--and busts. What did the founders of Moody's, Value Line, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average think about the markets they were analyzing and attempting to quantify?

Thus, when Charles Dow writes in an essay titled "Booms and Busts" that "There is a pronounced difference between bull markets that are made by manipulation and those that are made by the public," you perk up. Sure, he was writing all this in the Wall Street Journal in 1899, but he could just as easily be talking about day traders and 401(k) savers in 1999.

Essays by more current investment gurus appear, too. Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch, and Abby Joseph Cohen pitch in, as does George Soros in a must-read section called "Crash and Learn". Not all investing involves the stock market, so even Donald Trump makes an appearance, with an essay called "Trump Cards: The Elements of the Deal."

You won't find hot stock tips here, but you will find the greatest investors of the past century or so discussing the principles that governed or govern their decision-making. And since those decisions created some of the greatest fortunes of all time, it's a vital read. --Lou Schuler

From Library Journal
This collection of speeches and articles provides sound investment advice. The contributors, well-respected experts, include Peter Lynch, who suggests buying stocks in a field you know through personal experience; Mario Gabelli, who discusses how world economic growth expands opportunities for American investors; and Martin Zweig, who explains the merits of selling stocks short. The weakest feature of these tapes, which are well narrated by Richard Poe, is the lack of new information for experienced investors; the strongest point is that the opinions given are solid. Review
Editor of The Book of Leadership Wisdom "A great patients' drug is one that cures an affliction once and for all, but a great investor's drug is one that the patient has to keep buying." -PETER LYNCH

"Those who invest well have an innate ability to distill abundant, raw information into the scarce commodity of wisdom. Here's how some of the best have done it down through the years." -David H. Komansky, Chairman and CEO, Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc.

"I personally knew moderately all the characters except Charles Dow. Any opportunity to learn more from such people is an opportunity that should not be missed." -Roy R. Neuberger, [his job title TK], Neuberger Berman Inc., and author of So Far, So Good: The First 94 years

Got both CD version and the hardcover. Get the hardcover since the audio has only a small fraction of the content
By A dad
The readings included in the CD were excellent, but the vast majority wasn't included. This book was way too abridged in the audio preparation. For that reason I suggest getting the physical book instead of audio. I got both and will confirm that every chapter of this anthology was excellent.

My favorite segment is by Edwin Lefevre called "Vanished Billions." Lefevre is my favorite financial writer of the 20s and 30s. Wow, this one is good! It's not in the CD though.

One of my favorites is Selling Short by Martin Zweig. His explanation of trading rules and the difficulty in following resonated with me. It was interesting to hear the reading from Mario Gabelli called Grand Slam Hitting. Whereas this book was compiled in the 90s based on writings from earlier times, Gabelli had interesting predictions on the future that turned out to be mainly accurate.

This is an anthology, a collection of writings by notable authors. I got the feeling that money was never the primary or original motivator for them. They were intensely interested in solving problems having to do with investing, speculating and economics.

A solid conservative investment for your reading portfolio.
By A Customer
An exceptional collection of essays by 46 great names business such as Pickens, Baruch, Moody, Buffet, Lynch, Forbes, Soros, and Trump. Key themes include: basic of analysis; attitude and philosophy; strategy; cycles; views from the inside; and more. Each essay includes a biographical sketch of the writer.
This collection of essays proves to be interesting, entertaining, and filled with informative thoughts. This is not a 'how to get-rich-quick in the stock market book'; it is more of a solid, conservative investment for your reading portfolio. Audiobook version is entertaining!
By Mark
My local library has the OverDrive eAudio version of this book, and because the topic can be rather dry to read, the narration does a good job of pacing me, and getting me through the volume.

The content is not much different from other books or audio-books of the genre, but because I don't work in the financial milieu, it helps to reinforce the type of thing and expected reaction for people living a "financial lifestyle"!
