About the Author
About the Author David V. Ragone received his S. B., S. M., and Sc.D. degrees in metallurgical engineering from MIT. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses in thermodynamics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from 1953 to 1962. From 1962 to 1967, as chairman of the materials department and assistant director of the Hopkins laboratory at the General Atomic Division of General Dynamics, he directed research on materials for advanced, high-temperature, gas-cooled nuclear reactors. He then served as Alcoa Professor of Metallurgy at the Carnegie- Mellon University, where he was also Associate Dean of Urban and Public Affairs. In 1970, he was named dean of the Thayer School at Dartmouth, and returned to the University of Michigan as Dean of Engineering in 1972. In 1980, he was named President of the Case Western University, where he served until 1987. He returned to teaching undergraduate courses in thermodynamics and the physical chemistry of materials at MIT in 1988, and began writing texts shortly thereafter. In addition to his appointment at MIT, David Ragone is a partner in Ampersand Ventures, a firm whose focus is on ventures in specialty materials and chemicals. He has also served as a member of the National Science Board and as a director of more than a dozen public and private companies. His professional society memberships include ASM, AIME, and ACS.

Good Intermediate Materials Science Teat

This review refers to Volume I which was I used in a recent graduate materials thermodynamics course. Completing two prior courses in classical thermodynamics oriented towards mechanical engineering and a survey course in Materials Science proved helpful in providing a background for a better understanding the material in this text. However, the basics are developed but in less detail. The text is definitely oriented towards understanding the basics in the application of thermodynamics to materials science and provides reasonable coverage of chemical equilibrium and binary solutions.
The material is developed sequentially so it is best to start at the beginning and work through each section. Fortunately I had access to most of the typographical errors but they do not represent a major hurdle to the basic quality of the theory presented and its understanding. It would have proved useful to the student had the author included answers to selected problems. Overall, I found this to be a good intermediate text.

In addition to the glowing comments by the other reviewers, the history of document design included a history of the teaching of English (and technical writing) and how it was and is perceived by professionals. I found it a fascinating re-examination of our attitudes and priorities.

The resource I keep coming back to...

This book is the most useful one I've found on the subject. Design books of all stripes (document-design focused or otherwise) have a tendency to provide "principles" without ever providing real support for said principles. Books will be loaded with recommendations that may or may not be well supported by data, quantified or at least well documented study results, etc.

Schriver's book does exactly the opposite, and this is why it is longer than many others. It is impossible to read about Schriver's document design principles and not know exactly where they came from. Virtually every recommendation is, for once, well supported by research findings. This book never tells you to do something without first explaining why it should be done.

If you're looking for a short-and-sweet book that conveys the most basic principles of document design ("principles" that may in fact be a designer's personal preferences), this isn't it.

If you're looking for a book that will help you make better design decisions and help you understand why to make these decisions over others, then this is the book for you. After all, it isn't so unusual for professional designers and others in the workplace to have to explain exactly why they've made certain choices over others, and this book can help.

About the Author
James Trefil’s interest in scientific literacy began with a contributed essay to E.D. Hirsch’s Cultural Literacy and continued with his work on the Content Review Board for the National Science Education Standards. He has authored or coauthored numerous books on science for the general audience. He serves as a regular contributor and science consultant for Smithsonian Magazine and as a science commentator on National Public Radio. He received undergraduate degrees from the University of Illinois and Oxford University. After receiving a doctorate in theoretical physics from Stanford University, he held postdoctorate and faculty appointments in Europe and the United States. James Trefil is the Clarence Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University. He has made contributions to research in elementary particle physics, fluid mechanics, medical physics (including cancer research), and the earth sciences. Robert M. Hazen is the Clarence Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University and Staff Scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington’s Geophysical Laboratory. Hazen developed a fascination for rocks and minerals as a child growing up in mineral-rich Northern New Jersey, and he pursued that interest as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After receiving a doctorate in earth sciences from Harvard University, he spent a year at Cambridge University as a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow. In addition to teaching courses on scientific literacy, scientific ethics, symmetry in art and science, and visual thinking, he performs research on materials at high pressure. His current studies on the origin of life explore the hypothesis that life arose in a deep, high-pressure environment. Robert Hazen is also a part-time professional trumpeter.

Good for expository writing.

I was lucky enough to run into this expository English manual at my local library. I have seen a lot of these books and few are as good as this one by Baden Eunson. What makes it a non-pareil is that it is very concise, only 200 pages or so, and direct. I have been told that I tend to write and speak evasively (like this sentence) in an indirect passive manner, but I have never understood previosly why other than grammar checker flagging it, why it was wrong. Eunson's book cut right to the chase and showed me examples of this and then went further, expalined how the impersonal passive is evasive, who is responsible is not cited, and suspicious, how can you trust me if I don't cite sources? This is just one example of many in this book. Highly recommended for those learning expository writing, or like me like to perfect theirs.

Proceeding in chronological order, chapter by chapter, science writer Hellman aims to show the human side of scientists, including all their petty frailties. Some of the feuds were more constructive than others; some seemed to center on personality clashes; collectively, they demonstrate that over the centuries science has shown little ability to acknowledge changing interpretations or newly calculated data without falling into conflict. Hellman certainly raises some questions on style in science, but it would have been even more worthwhile if he had tried to derive some theme from these confrontations instead of simply demonstrating that scientists can be just as human as the rest of us. For the most part entertaining and informative

This book makes science interesting. The science we so often learn in school makes it seem as though science always proceeds in a straight-forward manner. This book explodes that stereotype. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of Kelvin and his estimate of the age of the earth, and, of course, the famous one between Galileo and the Church.
The most recent one is between Derek Freeman and the late Margaret Mead. After I first read about it I felt that people were being pretty hard on Mead, but since then I've changed my mind. People claiming to do scientific research are held to high standards. If they are found to be not completely honest, even once, their reputation is ruined. That is a high standard, but a fair one.

A feast for science fans!

This book is delightful and any science fan should enjoy it.

Stories of scientific conflicts are offered together with historical background,
who were the allies on each side.

Each tale is introduced carefully, with information on how the scientific issue and
conflict came about. The various stages of the debate, from simmering to boiling,
are given in detail.

If there is any flaw at all, it might be that on occasion, the reader is not given quite
enough detail about the actual scientific issue in question.

But this is more than made up for by the excellent manner of presentation.

Hellman's "Great Feuds ..." is great reading!

I have to disagree strongly with one of the customer reviews of Hal Hellman's "Great Feuds in Science." "Iceage" complains that "... the book dissapoints (sic)... mainly because of its lack of first person perspeective. I was looking for more feeling, more virulent attacking by two historical giants ..." Apparently the reviewer was expecting people like Newton and Leibniz or Thomas Hobbes and John Wallis to stand head to head yelling four-letter words at each other. We should be fair: these feuds are scientific battles, not barroom brawls. As for his complaint that he "was hoping for more of a graphic and detailed picture of the opposition ..." I found Hellman's examples apt and intriguing. One example: John Wallis, mathematician and clergyman, writes to a colleague about Hobbes: "... nor should we be deterred ... by his arrogance which we know will vomit poisonous filth against us." In Chapter 10, Hellman r! elates that Derek Freeman, Australian anthropologist, wrote of that American icon, Maargaret Mead, that many of her assertions about Samoa, made decades earlier, are " ... fundamentally in error and some are preposterously false." Also, "There isn't another example of such wholesale self-deception in the history of the behavioral sciences." These aren't four-letter words, but they are explosive. Hellman has given us that good feel for who these people were and what they meant to society at the time. This book could bring science to life for the young and those of us who are more experienced. Iceage missed the boat but your readers should jump on board.

Great Historical Value

The book has a great historical value. It explains the theoretical basis of the simplified methods implemented in most modern design codes. The emphasize is on strength design based on Yield Line method. But, nowadays slab design is governed by the serviceability criteria, rather than strength. The serviceability design is not well covered, which makes this book not very useful. It is an interesting book, but it is not very practical and it is not very relevant to the modern design practice.
