SHINNERS is Program Manager at Lockheed Martin Federal Systems, Inc. and Adjunct Professor at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science, with four decades of university and industrial teaching experience. This book is based on his control system courses at Cooper Union and in industrial programs

Good introduction, but...

Good first introduction to a wide array of control theory topics. It may also become a good book in library to refer back to for specific techniques. But--

The mathematical notation is often sloppy, e.g., does "dS/dt0" mean what it looks like, or does it mean "dS/dt evaluated at t=t0"?

The book is still valuable, but a more rigorous introduction to some of the topics (e.g., Kirk's Optimal Control Theory: An Introduction) is a needed accessory.

an adequate text, still beleaguered by 30-y-o problems

Shinners taught part-time at The Cooper Union (my alma mater), and several of my classmates suffered under him at Sperry (now Unisys) in Great Neck, N.Y., where he managed some useless group or other. He was as dull and uninspiring in person as his text. (When he left the room, people would derisively chime, "Dick!" in unison. [The only thing more disrespectful is when--in Dr. Yalow's nuclear physics recitation--the football team folks would throw wet chalkboard erasers at the back of his bald head.] In fact, Shinners was so dull that [at least during the summer when I worked at Sperry], we would head to McSorley's [in Manhattan!] for lunch from Sperry [in Nassau County!], requiring us to leave at 10:30AM and getting us back barely in time for the 2:00PM meeting! Sometimes, on the way back, we could stop [quite drunk: DUI was something of a ha-ha back then {we're talking early 1980s}] at the Queens Farm Museum; pet the nice, fat sheep; hand-feed them grass [the idiots would rush to eat our hand-served grass rather than save mileage and eat the grass that grew right at their feet]; and joke about what nice, warm sweaters could be woven from them.) If he got boring enough, we could amuse ourselves by choosing the youngest, weakest student in the room and hammering wedges into the tips of his toes to shatter the bones. (Inspired cruelty is always good for a laugh.) I did calmer things during my tenure at Sperry, like stealing newborn Canada geese from their parents and--when the parents got profoundly upset--returning the youngster unharmed.

You can do far, far better than Shinners. Kuo isn't bad; Ogata is decent, albeit too thick. I can't (looking back in retrospect) come up with any legitimate reason to expend 500+ pages on this fundamentally trivial topic. There is little of value to learn other than MASON'S RULE: once you've mastered that, you're on your way. He goes on and on about the STATE-VARIABLE REPRESENTATION and the STATE MATRIX and the VANDERMONDE transformation and such, but--once again--I never saw that again (and everything is digitally simulated on computers, anyway). All that jazz about phase lag compensation and what-not is, frankly, utterly trivial and obvious if you are a skilled mathematician who is ultra-comfortable slinging things back and forth from the time domain to the frequency domain. Shinners goes on and on and on about root locus plots. My friend, since school, I have never again seen a root locus plot; and, come to think of it, I cannot muster a legitimate reason for plotting the loci of the roots of a frequency-domain polynomial. What gives? Now, I do remember walking through a root locus exercise as a drunken class (yes, drunken: we had just returned from a seder in the Wollman Lounge, where everybody got drunk as a monkeyin' skunk on free Manischewitz and Kedem and other "top quality" Jewish wines that are sugar first, quality later). Or were those Bode plots? Dr. Efe (may he rest in peace) made us burst out laughing: with his Turkish accent, he began with, "Now, everybody take a sheet of semilog graph paper," and--when the drunken class was slow in responding--he barked, "Everybody! Take a sheet!" where "sheet" sounded like "s***." (The only thing funnier is when Dr. Ellison demonstrated a thing in physics lecture that looked, for all the world, like a condom, and he wrapped up the experiment by saying--in his Colorado-accent-cum-lisp--"Uh, er, this device is called, uh, Faraday's Bag." Only Ling-wei Chang [who didn't understand the joke, having recently emigrated from Hong Kong] remained in her seat rather than rolling on the floor, laughing out loud, feet kicking uncontrollably into the air as the whole body rocked with spasms of delight.)

Where was I? Yes, pass on Shinners and his over-the-top, repetitive, largely irrelevant, tearfully boring foolishness.

(Oh, and Sperry SUCKED in the nepotism department: I hope Unisys is a little better. There were two Gordons in my group of three: Gordon Somebody and Somebody Gordon [no kidding]. One was an abject moron whose mom was the secretary of someone prominent at Sperry; the other went to Gordon College in Massachusetts [no s***!] and was retained because his adviser was the nephew of such-and-such VP at Sperry. It was the first time I had encountered nepotism--I was only 19 or so--and I thought it was profoundly revolting. The only time worse is when I interviewed for a "position" at Transarc in Pittsburgh and found out that the other "candidate" being "interviewed" was the kid brother of Jeff Eppinger, the SVP. Uh--yeah, sure, a fair process, to be certain! I know all this is irrelevant, but, come on: what's a book review [other than DULLSVILLE] if you don't throw in some goose-stealing, and nepotism, and clever tortures perpetrated on your fellow students, and drunken forays into uncharted mathematical waters?)
