A practical guide to using the TMS320C31 DSP Starter Kit
With applications and demand for high-performing digital signal processors expanding rapidly, it is becoming increasingly important for today's students and practicing engineers to master real-time digital signal processing (DSP) techniques.
Digital Signal Processing: Laboratory Experiments Using C and the TMS320C31 DSK offers users a practical--and economicalm--approach to understanding DSP principles, designs, and applications. Demonstrating Texas Instruments' (TI) state-of-the-art, low-priced DSP Starter Kit (DSK), this book clearly illustrates and integrates practical aspects of real-time DSP implementation techniques and complex DSP concepts into lab exercises and experiments. TI's TMS320C31 digital signal processor provides substantial performance benefits for designs that have floating-point capabilities supported by high-level language compilers.
Most chapters begin with a theoretical discussion followed by representative examples. With numerous programming examples using TMS320C3x and C code included on disk, this easy-to-read text:
* Covers DSK tools, the architecture, and instructions for the TMS320C31 processor
* Illustrates input and output
* Introduces the z-transform
* Discusses finite impulse response (FIR) filters, including the effect of window functions
* Covers infinite impulse response (IIR) filters
* Discusses the development and implementation of the fast Fourier transform (FFT)
* Examines utility of adaptive filters for different applications
Bridging the gap between theory and application, this book furnishes a solid foundation for DSP lab or project design courses for students and serves as a welcome, practically oriented tutorial in the latest DSP techniques for working professionals.

A below average book
By A grad student
I bought the book and a TI DSK kit because I thought I could self study TMS320 family. But it's impossible for me to learn from this book. My background: I had a DSP class, an assembly Motorola 6800 class and numerical method/C class and found this book was too difficult for me.

Excellent book for begginers.
By A Customer
This book provides a great help to people learning how DSPs work and how DSP algorithms are implemented in this powerful processors. The DSK provides a cheap way to start the learning process and Dr. Chassaing teaches us how to exploit this kit. The only drawback I saw for this book is the fact that crucial parts of the algorithms are developed in C using the C compiler for the C31, which is much more expensive than the DSK. Henrik Sorensen's book works more on the assembly language even though it is oriented towards the C30 processor, which has a PC based evaluation module and C compiler, allowing it to communicate directly to the Host PC. To finish this review, this book helped me a lot and left me with lots of work to do.

excellent book for upper division / grad level / industry
By A Customer
I found this book highly valuable. With it I was able to complete a upper division / grad level project in active noise cancellation. (Search the web for the string "Active Noise Cancellation in Free Space using Adaptive Filtering on a Digital Signal Processor" and you will find the description of my project. The project did not ultimately work, because the design involved is extremely sensitive to real world components, however the experience in getting it to demonstration was excellent.)
With this book and the hardware from TI, it is very possible to get great experiments going. (For advanced work. This is not a beginner book. If you don't understand assembly programming and programming embedded systems this might not be the place to start.)
Of course the hardware from TI has it's limitations, such as using their own wierd codec, however, you can bypass this codec and built your own analog interface board, which I'd recommend for larger projects, especially if your lab has available access to board layout & production to build clean analog interface boards.
I'd also suggest that grad classes use this as a lab text. Good real-world books like this are difficult to find. This one is still technologically current (for the time being).
