This is the cookbook I use when I don't feel like cooking!
By Wendy
I must admit I'm a cook book junkie--always at the library and book stores looking for healthy, "kid-friendly" recipes. I purchased this book on a whim five years ago, and would rate it my all time favorite "family" cookbook. Recipes are in chapters: Soups, Chicken & Fish, Ground Beef (Turkey), Vegetables, Grains, Tortillas, Potatos, Pita Pockets, Stir-fry, Salads, Breads, Finishing touches, Snacks & Lunch treats for kids, and finally Beverages. At the end of all recipes are suggestions to "balance your meal." Many of these suggestions are other recipes in the cook book. There are also several microwave recipes throught the book. The tortilla recipes (Bean Burrito--micro & fast!) and pita recipes (Chicken Parmesan Pita)are especially good. The Chocolate Pudding (micro) recipe is a great after school snack. The bottom line is that my kids will eat almost everything I cook from this book, and I can't say that about any other cook book I own.

Cheese Whiz?
By Notyomomma
Someone tell me, is instant rice, chopped frozen broccoli and CHEESE WHIZ really healthy? If so, I have been doing family meals all wrong!

The book does have some so-so recipes, but they aren't anything that I cant come up with on my own. There are no pictures which makes searching it as exciting as watching paint dry. It is just a major disappointment. I think people who would benefit from this book are people who tend to do fast-food or frozen food a lot, because these recipes are very easy and quick and a whole lot better then a happy meal. But for me, who loves to cook for the family, its just too boring and doesn't deliver on the healthy aspect.

Pros: Quick easy recipes

Has suggestions how to balance the meal (the key to a healthy dinner)

Recipes are much better then fast food

Cons: Not so healthy sometimes

No pictures

Pretty Good, But not Great
By Charlotte
Decent recipes. Not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, but they're pretty good (the Chunky Apple Muffins are *very* delicious!). However, some recipes do use heavily processed stuff like cream-of-whatever soup, cheez whiz, etc. Ick. :( It's very easy and takes just a few minutes to make a white sauce instead of using a can of cream soup. Not sure why the authors didn't do that instead, as it's much better - both for flavor and health - than the processed stuff.

My biggest complaint is that the cover says that the recipes can be made in 30 minutes or less. Not true for all of them! I can think of several off the top of my head that take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. I wish they wouldn't have advertised what they couldn't deliver.

Biological Anthropology of the Human SkeletonFrom Wiley-Liss

The biology of prehistoric and early historic peoples is studied largely through the analysis of hard tissue. Fascinating changes have occurred in the analysis of human skeletal and dental remains over the past few years for various reasons. Factors such as new technology, advances in the field of forensic anthropology, and heightened ethical concerns regarding the study of aboriginal peoples' remains where those people are no longer the dominant culture have emerged as significant themes for research and are examined in this comprehensive book.

Organized into five parts with contributing chapters written by experts in the field of human skeletal biology, Biological Anthropology of the Human Skeleton delves into a variety of areas unique to literature. Part One covers theory and application, which leads to Part Two's discussion of morphological analyses of bone, teeth, and age changes. Following in Part Three are reviews of prehistoric health and disease. Part Four examines chemical and genetic analyses of hard tissues, and Part Five closes with coverage of quantitative methods and population studies. Such in-depth topics as how humans have regarded the dead over time and across cultures, the ethics of skeletal research, and the contributions and advances in research analysis are essential elements contained within this book. Other subjects covered are:
* Dental morphology, highlighting new methods of characterizing tooth size and shape
* Recent investigations of microstructural growth markers in dental tissues
* Studies based on gross observations of bones, gross observations of teeth, and microscopic studies
* Bone structure at the histological level and the factors that account for variation
* Stable isotope analysis, trace element analysis, and the extraction and amplification of ancient DNA
* Plus many other topics that contain the common thread of determining information about past peoples from their skeletal and dental remains

Biological Anthropology of the Human Skeleton covers a scope of major topics in human skeletal biology and will be an indispensable research guide to biological anthropologists, osteologists, paleoanthropologists, and archaeologists.

A highly recommended text
By A Customer
"Biological Anthropology of the Human Skeleton will become a leader in the field for texts in the discipline. The editors have collected together key workers and focused on major areas of study and developments in techniques of analysis. Underpinning and preceding the main chapters has been the very important consideration of the ethics surrounding the analysis of human remains, somehting that is often ignored in similar texts. The thoroughness in which the authors have tackled their subjects is testament to their status as experts. The text will appeal to staff and students of anthropology, archeology, medical history and a much wider audience in genetics, pathology, histology and statistics. a highly recommended text." --Charlotte Roberts, University of Durham

Comprehensive, Insightful and a Superbly Good Read
By Douglas B. Hanson
This is perhaps one of the most comprehensive treatments of this now broad subject area that I have ever read. The authors are to be applauded for gathering together some of the foremost experts in this field of study and organizing a diverse group of papers into a volume that is not only eminently readable by scientists and laypeople alike, but will also certainly stand as one of the outstanding volumes in biological anthropology for years to come. Professionals, students, and laypeople alike will all find something thought-provoking in this book. Very Highly Recommended.

mining engineering
By Kyle
I purchased this book for a class. It is very informative. The way they explain things can be annoying at times. There are lots of references in the middle of paragraphs that are unecessary. There are also many times where they say "go to this book to find out about this subject". It's good if you actually want to go look for other books, but annoying if you are just reading this one. The graphs and pictures are very helpful. Overall this book explains the concepts well.

Not very informative
By D. R. Martz
Not written to especially high standards. There are many ways this book could be improved. For example, there is no glossary, but there are a couple of embedded lists that define a portion of the jargon used in the book. You can't find the lists when you need them, nor has there been much effort to completely define terms, as the production of a glossary would naturally motivated. There are other problems, leading to a rather mediocre product. Examples: Lots of description of what is currently done (say in excavating or demolition) or how things are trending, without any sort of engineering explanation. From an education standpoint that's just a bunch of filler. Similarly, lists of factors to be considered for a particular aspect of mine development (climate, slope, soil, etc.), paired up with lists of development options (leaching, open pit, tunnel, for example), without any discussion of which of the first list affect or how they affect choices in the second list. In other words this book has a lot of abstract 'what' in the form of lists and factors, with very little 'how.' From this book alone, a reader would advance very little toward becoming a mining engineer.

Expensive, but it was useful.
By Ye Shall Be As Gods
Not bad as an introductory book. If you know virtually nothing about the field it will give you a flyover at 50,000 feet kind of an overview. It lacks a glossary though which in my opinion is essential. I found it lacking in terms of connecting some of the dots between complicating factors and solutions that lead to a change in mining trends that had to be answered by other texts and classes throughout my degree. I was much more impressed with this the first time I read through it than I was after I read through it again towards the tail end of my degree, but then again I knew nothing about mining when I started as a freshman. For the amount of money this text is I guess I expected a bit more.

From the Inside Flap
David walker’s Appeal. The Souls of Black Folk. Things Fall Apart. Their Eyes Were Watching God. The Fire Next Time. Beloved … Books are a cornerstone of black culture. Charting over 200 years of transition and turmoil, perseverance and triumph, intelligence, horror, and exquisite beauty, black literature rings with a remarkable people’s vitality and passion, improvisational spirit and spiritual questing. Now, capturing the full sweep of writing from the Diaspora—from Africa to the Caribbean to America—Sacred Fire: The QBR 100 Essential Black Books celebrates the most influential works in this rich tradition, one of world literature’s strongest forces. QBR: The Black Book Review is the preeminent showcase for the critical review of contemporary African American books and authors. The editors of QBR have tapped a blue-ribbon panel of leading scholars, historians, authors, and booksellers to reach a consensus on works having the most significant impact across the decades—the books that matter most. The resulting list of 100 books is an impressive collection of poetry, short fiction, novels, drama, autobiography, and history. Divided into six thematic sections—introduced by outstanding young writers like Eisa Nefertari Ulen, Arthur Flowers, and Robert Fleming—the books are excerpted and highlighted with insightful commentary. The first section, "Ancestors, Origins, and Memory," explores books that have shaped our views of slavery, oppression, and the African continent as paradise lost. Included in this section are The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, the first independently written slave narrative; Beloved, Toni Morrison’s haunting tale of slavery and its aftermath; and Ivan Van Sertima’s ground-breaking challenge to European history, They Came Before Columbus. The section called "Community and Identity" celebrates books that explore individual freedom and the collective power of the alienated and marginalized, featuring the works of W. E. B. Du Bois, Wallace Thurman, Langston Hughes, Chinua Achebe, and Lorraine Hansberry, among others. Their range is matched by their depth. In the sections "Politics, Nationalism, and Revolution" and "Soul and Spirit," one finds Eldridge Cleaver’s Soul on Ice, Chancellor williams’s The Destruction of Black Civilization, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letters from a Birmingham Jail, and Marian Wright Edelman’s Guide My Feet. In "Sisters’ Stories," works by Maya Angelou, Ntozake Shange, Audre Lorde, and other outstanding writers capture the varied experiences of black women. "Brothers’ Lives" salutes the seminal works on black manhood by writers like Richard Wright, August Wilson, and Ernest Gaines. Honoring and exploring the greatest achievements in black writing across the centuries, Sacred Fire is soul-shaking, essential reading for all lovers of literature and lively opinion.

An informative but flawed list
By Michael J. Mazza
Here's a handy rule: always be wary of any person or institution who claims to have produced a list of "essential" items in any field. A case in point: "Sacred Fire: The QBR 100 Essential Black Books," by Max Rodriguez, Angeli R. Rasbury, and Carol Taylor. The book is a list of 100 books from the African Diaspora, each with a brief descriptive commentary. The book features a foreword by Charles Johnson. While informative to a degree, this list is, in my opinion, seriously flawed.
In his foreword, Johnson mocks other recent attempts to create "essential" lists. He complains, for example, of the "nervous tokenism" of the "100 Best English-Language Novels" list from the Modern Library. Ironically, such criticisms could also be applied to this book! How did they come up with the list? Rodriguez is fuzzy on that point in his intro. He notes that the list stems from a request, addressed to individuals, to name 10 Black books that had the greatest impact on them. Rodriguez claims, "We asked everyone," then immediately admits that such an absurd statement is false. But he does note that he asked his sister!
Most of the books chosen are indeed essential classics. But I found the list as a whole too "safe," unimaginative, and narrow of vision. Johnson acknowledges the omission of such writers as Samuel Delany and Rita Dove in his foreword. Books with an experimental, cutting edge quality seem to be absent. I was also dismayed by the failure to include many historic literary milestones by African-American women. Books by Black gay men that deal directly with the black gay experience are also largely absent. Black lesbians are represented by a token appearance by Audre Lorde (with her book "Sister Outsider"). A number of groundbreaking anthologies also fail to appear. And where are the Afro-Hispanic writers? Even the remarkable science fiction author Octavia Butler is solely represented by "Kindred" -- an excellent book, but probably the "safest" and most conventional choice from her incredible personal canon.
Just a few books I would add to an expanded edition: Adrienne Kennedy's "In One Act," an anthology of plays by this award-winning, boldly experimental pioneer of drama; Phillis Wheatley's "Poems on Various Subjects," an 18th century landmark in poetry; Harriet Jacobs' "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl," perhaps the most important autobiography by a 19th-century Black woman; "Nine Plays by Black Women," a stunning anthology edited by Margaret Wilkerson; and Ann Allen Shockley's "Loving Her," a novel which broke new ground for the portrayal of sexuality in the Black novel.
Also try Audre Lorde's poetic, moving "Zami"; Alexis De Veaux's "Don't Explain: A Song of Billie Holiday," an amazing biography told in poetic form; "Brother to Brother: New Writings by Black Gay Men," the anthology edited by Essex Hemphill; "A Puerto Rican in New York and Other Sketches," by Jesus Colon, who proudly claimed a Black Latino identity decades before it was politically correct; Anna Julia Cooper's "A Voice from the South," a pioneering collection of essays; "Home Girls: A Black Feminist Anthology," edited by Barbara Smith; Pat Parker's "Movement in Black," the rich poetic testament of an outspoken Black lesbian; and Samuel Delany's "Dhalgren," an enigmatic epic which extends the boundaries of both science fiction and the African-American novel. I could go on, but I'll quit here.

An absolute must for lovers of African American literature
By Dera R Williams
This book should be a part of the library of those who study black culture and history. It is an excellent guide to literature past and present. About ten years ago the Oakland Public Library published a list of the one hundred books that were classics. Supposedly by having read these books you would be considered well read. There were many I had read but people of color was sorely missing from this list. I am grateful that Max Rodrigues, who also puts out an excellent review of books by and about black people- QBR: The Black Book Review, published this great resource. Of course one can think of more books to be added to the list and in the publication last year readers were invited to add their own list of favorities. This book is a great referral tool and a timeless keepsake.

Wonderful guide to the best of black literature
By afropuffs@prodigy.net
If your knowledge of black lit doesn't go beyond the latest Oprah pick, this book is essential. Although some of the picks can be argued, the short, opinonated summaries are fun to read and the list itself is a great guide to a year's worth of good reading.

From the Back Cover
What if Bill Bernbach and Hunter Thompson wrote a how-to book on advertising?

It would be a searing, very funny cross between an insider's guide to writing great ads and a sendup of all that's heavy-handed, dim-witted, and ineffectual in advertising. This pretty much sums up "Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This." by Luke Sullivan, one of today's most successful copywriters working at one of the most prestigious advertising agencies. A relentless wisecracker, Sullivan provides pointers, tips, and guidelines on how to write and produce successful ads for print, TV, radio, billboards, and more, while regaling you with hilarious war stories.

"Luke Sullivan writes just about as relevant an advertising read as you can get. It's a perfect lesson in advertising for newcomers—and a familiar and laughably painful reminiscence for those of us entrenched in this noble and often crazy profession." —Lee Clow, Chairman, TBWA Chiat/Day, Chief Creative Officer, Worldwide

"Luke Sullivan knows the business and writes about it with . . . gentle wit and insight." —Dan G. Wieden, Wieden & Kennedy

"The most informative and entertaining book about life as it really is in the creative department of an advertising agency. Even account men could write great ads after reading it." —Tim Delaney, Leagas-Delaney, London

"In an advertising world filled with glib, fast-talking 'experts' more adept at arranging lunch than writing ads, Luke Sullivan is the exception. Here, at last, is a step-by-step primer for anyone interested in writing effective, powerful, breakthrough ads." —Tom McElligott, co-founder, Fallon McElligott

Buy the book. Skip to chapter 3.
By D. Berzack
The first few chapters consist of preachy rants against cheesy advertising. Since I'm not interested in hearing a lecture on the cultural responsibility of advertising, I was a bit turned off. But I'm glad I pressed on, because the rest of the book is jammed with great insights into all aspects of the industry. The light, humorous tone makes for a fun read. Sullivan uses tons of interesting metaphors and examples to illustrate the process of creativity and life in the ad world. If you're considering this book, just buy it already.

Just buy it.
By A Customer
Few things inspire, but this does. Luke Sullivan's hilarious look at the advertising business does something most "How To" books don't even do - it actually tells you "How To." And it shows you why. Then Mr. Sullivan follows it all up with why you shouldn't be taking his advice in the first place.
Thanks Mr. Sullivan. "Hey Whipple" is the blast of inspiration this young copywriter needed.
