As a companion volume to their previous book, Applied Multivariate Statistics with SAS Software, Second Edition, which discusses multivariate normality-based analyses, this book covers topics where, for the most part, assuming multivariate normality (or any other distributional assumption) is not crucial. About the Author
Ravindra Khattree

Ravindra Khattree, professor of applied statistics at Oakland University,

Rochester, Michigan, received his graduate training at the Indian Statistical

Institute in Calcutta. He received his graduate training at the University of

Pittsburg in 1985. He is an author or coauthor of numerous research papers

on theoretical and applied statistics in various national and international

journals and conference proceedings. His research interests include

multivariate analysis, experimental designs, quality control, repeatd

measures, and statistical inference. In addition to teaching graduate and

undergraduate courses, Dr. Khattree regularly consults with industry and

academic researchers on various applied statistic problems. He is also an

associate editor of Communications in Statistics and an editor of InterStat,

a statistics journal on the Internet. Additionally, Dr. Khattree is coauthor,

with Dr. Naik, of Applied Multivariate Statistics with SAS Software,

Second Edition.

Dayanand N. Naik

Dayanand N. Naik is an associate professor of statistics at Old Doninion

University, Norfolk, Virginia. He received his M.S. degree in statistics

from Karnatak University on Dharwad, India, and a Ph.D. degree in statistics

from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985. He has published his research in

several well-known journals, and he is the thesis advisor for many graduate

students. His research and teaching interests include multivariate analysis,

linear models, quality control, regression diagnostics, repeated measures

analysis, and growth curve models. Dr. Naik is also an editor of InterStat,

a statistics journal on the Internet. Additionally, Dr. Naik is coauthor,

with Dr. Khattree, of Applied Multivariate Statistics with SAS

Software, Second Edition.

good practical book on data reduction and discrimination

I know these authors very well and they are both good instructors and writers. The nice thing about their two books is that they cover the important material for applied statisticians and they illustrate the techniques with SAS programming. This is especially helpful for those of us working in the pharmaceutical industry where SAS is essentially mandated.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that they still recommend the leave-one-out method for error estimation in discriminant analysis when the work of Efron and others in the mid 1980s indicated that bootstrap methods of bias adjustment are generally superior to leave-one-out. The authors neglected to mention anything about the bootstrap literature on it.

Good general introduction to standard methods

Written for seasoned users of SAS and statistical modelers, this book gives a fine overview of how some of the more important tools in dimensional reduction and multivariate analysis can be implemented in SAS. It is full of examples, with the SAS source code included, and can be used in a cookbook fashion with the appropriate material drawn as needed. This reviewer did not read the book from cover to cover, and did not test all the SAS source code that has been provided, but found the book helpful in areas such as principal component analysis, discrimination analysis, and cluster analysis. The only issue of concern that might be of concern, depending of course on one's particular philosophy of programming, is that the SAS coding is not approached from the standpoint of canned routines or macros. Some individuals who program in SAS, such as this reviewer, prefer that macros be used as much as possible in order to encapsulate just what the code is supposed to do. This approach is also more appropriate in a professional programming environment where it is imperative that the code be trustworthy and reliable. The SAS code in the book that this reviewer actually used does do its job but would need refinement if used in a commercial environment or financial institution where model risk is an important factor. In addition, those who have access to SAS Enterprise Guide will note that it contains SAS routines that can do many of the same things that are outlined in this book, and without detailed expertise in SAS. Many people have also used Enterprise Guide, and any bugs in it have therefore been ameliorated. This makes it trustworthier in a professional programming environment.

There are also some omissions in the book whose inclusion may have been helpful for the more advanced modeler/SAS programmer. The chapter on cluster analysis for example does not include a discussion on self-organizing maps or general competitive learning algorithms. Kernel-based methods, such as support vector machines are also not discussed in the book, as well as regression trees and neural networks. These used to be considered exotic or esoteric subjects for statistical modelers, but in the last few years the use of neural networks and support vector machines is becoming routine, especially in image analysis, computational radiology, and financial modeling. The book would have been awesome if these topics were discussed, along with inclusion of the appropriate SAS source code.

large statistics packages

SAS Institute has built up a huge portfolio of statistical packages. This book lets you appreciate a portion of it. Directed at a reader who is a professional statistician. Or perhaps a programmer. Preferably both, maybe.

The statistical terminology was mostly unfamiliar to me, and I've had a couple of years of undergraduate stats classes. Thus, the bulk of the book was over my head. But it should be said that the SAS code performs many of these functions, leaving you to concentrate on the higher level, manual assessment of the results. What the book shows you is essentially how to save your time, by avoiding having to code that functionality yourself.

Very good for learning

This book is a shortened version of "Learning and Practising Econometrics (1993)", which itself is a shortened version of "The Theory and Practice of Econometrics (1982)".
Hill's "Undergraduate Econometrics" instills understanding by slowly going through derivations and principles, while at the same time motivating econometric analysis by referring to economic situations where it can be used. Much better than Gujarati (which tends to be a "cookery book" rather than giving an integrated treatment).
The book both motivates the student and takes them through the steps and methods they will need to adopt in further econometric studies, and always provides a good reference (often to one of the parent books mentioned above) when it omits proofs and other details.
The only weakness of the book reveals what is (to my mind) an unhealthy preoccupation with estimation issues, as opposed to those of data quality. As people like Granger have consistently pointed out, the real issues in 21st century econometrics have to do with what sort of data we have, and what methods are most appropriate in different situations. Despite this, Hill et al almost exclusively dwell on the identically and independently distributed (iid) specification. However, I should point out in the book's defence that this preoccupation is shared by most other introductory (and graduate) textbooks on econometrics.
The book's good points far outweigh these weaknesses. Finally, the second edition has some updates, and discusses such developments as time series econometrics. "Undergraduate Econometrics" should definitely be purchased by anyone wishing to learn about modern empirical methods.

Excellent intuition BUT A POOR BRIDGE TO THE DREADFUL GREENE

This book is the best book to use for the very first course in econometrics. It takes you by the hand to teach you all you need in terms of the basics.
I only give it 4 stars for two reasons. First, while this book is non-mathematical (and I agree with that) it should have nonetheless appendices that make use of matrices and differential calculus.
Second, this book is extremely expensive.
This book can easily earn 5 stars if in the next edition it contains appendices that will create a bridge towards intermediate econometrics. A more reasonable price would also be welcomed.
Overall, this is the best book to use for a very first course in econometrics.

Informative Literature in the Practice of Architecture

I am very pleased to find a book written with such an extreme knowledge of the true meaning and use of ethics in the architectural field. It is an excellent text book for students in this field. It will help to guide anyone on their path to what a real architect should know and practice. I recommend it highly and found that it is a slice of literature which is in a field all it's own.

Not a book to be tossed aside lightly

Rather, it should be thrown aside with great force.

Pointless, mostly hagiographic recycling of the various articles on Julian Robertson.

Unlike, say Lowenstein on Buffett, or Manes & Andrews on Gates, you will not find a comprehensive, insightful biography, nor any thoughtful discussion of the processes of investing and building a money management business.

That book remains to be written, and deserves to be.

Open Memo to Strachman: Go back to grammmar school.

Although the book bills itself as being about Robertson it is, to a greater extent, about the Tiger fund and the world of hedge funds in general. Usually this would make it a more useful read for aspiring managers but Strachman's tangential and repetitive manner of writing detracts from the overall benefit of the text by making it hard to follow and tedious to read. I needed at least 3 mojitos before I could tolerate it when reading the book in Mexico.

The numerous grammatical, typographical, numerical and reference errors further detract from the overall quality of the book and give it the appearance of the unfinished manuscript of a high school senior flunking English instead of a marketable work.

Although the book's jacket promises "candid interviews with Robertson" aside from a few scattered quotes by Julian and his Cubs most of Strachman's "inside information" is obtained from Robertson's Memos to Limited Partners and the fund's marketing pamphlet.

Moreover, the analysis of different money management strategies is far too basic to be of any real benefit to anyone serious about finance. This is especially strange since the author is himself a Managing Director of an asset management firm. It feels as though Strachman is trying to make the material more accessible to the armchair investor - but most people who pick up this book, and know of Robertson offhand, are likely not getting their stock tips from "Chuck" Schwab. On the other hand, Strachman is able to find an audience who will pay $400 for his newsletter, so perhaps there are enough dolts with money to fill his target audience.

A bad, bad book

I know I am going to get flamed for this, or maybe this review will be yanked completely for offending the tender sensibilities of the author, but the truth be told--this is an awful book. That is the truth, and the truth hurts sometimes. So be it.

I have nothing against either the author or the subject of this book. In fact, don't take my word for it, just search through this book as I didn't do before buying it. Then compare it to other books about hedge funds, such as the really great biography of George Soros by Michael Kaufmann. This one is not in that league.

My problem with the book is a bit like the old joke--the food was terrible, and the portions were so small! This book is really skimpy when it comes to detail. You don't get a feel for what it was like to be Julian Robertson, head of this massive fund organization. My other problem is that what there is in the book just isn't very good. It doesn't read well, it is awkward and sloppy. But the thing that put me off the most about this book was its constant flattery of Robertson, which undermined the book's credibility. Also he relies far too much on quotations from magazines as he wraps up the end of the Robertson funds in 2000.

This book was a terrible waste of money. I came away feeling cheated. Really really bad.

Text for Mathematicians and Scientists.

The Introduction to Discrete Dynamical Systems and Chaos is an excellent text for those who just start sturying descrete dynamical systems and for those who already have some knowledge in the field. The book can be used as a textbook or as a guide for individual studies. In the first case the instructors will find a set of carefully chosen problems at the end of each chapter and several interesting projects for the students. While the first part of the book can be understood by a person without extensive mathematical background, the second part deals with topics such as nonlinear dynamical systems and chaotic behavior using Banach contraction principle, fractal dimension, etc.
To illustrate the use of dynamical systems the book also describes few very common models: blood-sell population, predator-prey, Lorenz Model, and neural networks.
The appendix on Mathematica and Dynamical Systems can be used by students to work on the sample projects offered by the author or by scientists to model and investigate the behavior of variety of dynamical system.

Applause for Martelli's Chaos !

This text is about chaos and discrete dynamical systems, but the organization, presentation and discourse of these topics in this wonderful edition are anything but chaotic. The writing and context of the ideas laid out bristles with personality and clear focus for presenting the student with adequate examples and detail. This book serves as a superb introduction to the area, and is rich with a wide variety of situations and problems that will motivate the novice and still challenge those with background. I signed on to teach an introductory course on Chaos at New Mexico Highlands University (I'm am one of three math faculty at this institution). I spent considerable time searching for a text that adequately addressed chaos and dynamical systems, that was challenging and yet personable and reader friendly. We have a wide disparity of math students at NMHU, particularly with regard to background, ability and vocational aspirations. It was important to use a text, I felt, that did not sacrifice detail, but at the same time did not pre-suppose overly technical sophistication. Most of the texts that I sampled, were quite terse, demanding or pedagogically constipated. When I came across MArtelli's text I was struck by the absence of these defects and then by the simple structure and sequence of topics that patiently build and reinforce concepts. The author's enthusiasm for the material comes through clearly and reaction from students I test-sampled echoed this feeling. In fact, both students have decided to enroll in my spring course - I believe their postiive response to this text was more than a contributing factor. In exchange for their time, I promised I would relay encouragement for all who are considering similar course offerings and a companion text that supports and reinforces the excitement of this area of mathematics. This book is a great resource. Bravo, Mario !!
