About the Author
GABRIEL BURSTEIN, PhD, was a macro proprietary trader with Goldman Sachs. He currently heads Specialized Equity Sales & Trading at Daiwa Europe Ltd., London, a group he set up to sell European equity products to hedge funds based on long/short macro and relative-value ideas. He is a frequent speaker on new long/short macro strategies and the EMU at worldwide alternative investment and hedge fund conferences. Dr. Burstein received his PhD in mathematics from Imperial College of the University of London. He has had several papers published in mathematical control theory and in mathematical modeling in neurology, neuroendocrinology, and HIV immunology.

Not advanced - not simple

I cannot be overly critical of this book merely due to my own preconceived notions of what it might be. I was expecting some sort of more hands-on version of Soros' "Alchemy". What I got was nothing of the kind. The trade examples are very simplistic and the book poorly constructed, laid out, and written. The entire work could be 2-3 chapters in normal prose and outline. The strategies discussed were somewhat advanced strategies that were described in an extremely simplistic manner. Somewhat akin to Sesame Street giving instructions on how to manage an options book. I was sorely disappointed as I know the author is capable of delivering a much more intriguing work.

Titles might be misleading by Tevfik Aksoy

The book is based on ex post iteration of events and investment strategies, which lacks the necessary foundation of macroeconomic introduction. It requires extensive knowledge of macroeconomics and finance in order to grasp (or digest) what the ideas behind strategies are. Clearly not for a beginner but I would not recommend it for an experienced fund manager at all. I found most of the examples and strategies highly simple.

Not really that good.......

When I first saw this book and ordered it i was very excited to learn more about the intricies of macro trading. After reading about 1/2 of the book I could tell I just wasted $40. I found that the authors comparison of two different variables on 1 graph with 2 Y axis was statistically wrong. You cannot compare two different variables on absolute movement at all, espically when you are using two different scales on the same graph. Using this method of comparison sun-spots and the S&P500 have correlated. The correct way to do this is by comparing percentage movement of the two different variables. By doing this with my previos example there is no real correlation, jsut as one would think. I would assume that the same would occur for 1/2 of this books graphs.

All in all, buy, Market-Neutral Investing : Long/Short Hedge Fund Strategies by Joseph G. Nicholas, You'll apperciate it alot more and it isn't flawed like the book on this page!

Essential for self study if you use the textbook

"Fundamentals of Photonics" is still the definitive book on the generation of coherent light by lasers and incoherent light by sources such as light-emitting diodes, light transmission through optical devices, and the detection of light by semiconductor photodetectors even 14 years after it was first published. Unfortunately the exercises for this book are of such complexity that the book is of somewhat limited usefulness for self-study without the solutions manual. If you own "Fundamentals of Photonics" you have a real storehouse of well-presented knowledge on optoelectronics. However, if you have the solution manual as well, you have established a synergistic relationship that should really supercharge your knowledge in this area. I know I really regret misplacing my copy of the solutions manual for this book and would pay just about any price to get that copy back or any other copy.
PLEASE NOTE that after 15 years a second edition is scheduled for release in May 2006 (ISBN 0471784761) by the same publisher as the first edition. It will be 200 pages longer and feature two new chapters to cover the advances in the field of photonics: Photonic-Crystal Optics and Ultrafast Optics, so this edition of the solutions manual may not be relevant much longer.

Some practice is preferable to none, but the exercises here are very short and choppy. Nothing is repeated, so if you want to really *practice* you'll have to make homework for yourself instead of relying on these assignments. The exercises generally require little effort. For example, each chapter has exercises where you look at a conversation in the text, then fill in the blanks in a conversation in the workbook--and the conversation is word-for-word the same as the one in the text. You don't have to think, generalize, or have even a basic grasp of Italian (or English, for that matter) to do that.
I also think that the text and workbook focus on vocabulary to the exclusion of grammar. The book doesn't talk about conjugating regular verbs till the third chapter. Instead, we've learned groups of vocabulary words that relate to topics like Grocery Shopping, Women in Italy, and Vacations.
On a positive note, you probably won't be turning to either of these books for reference or practice, so they'll stay in good shape and you can sell them at the end of the semester. I'd buy a good Italian dictionary and _501 Italian Verbs_ if you want to be able to write coherent sentences, because you sure won't get that from _Eccoci_.

Handbook for Managers, not investors

Although helpful and well written, the book appears more appropriate for executives or managers of operating companies that may be faced with bankruptcy prospects. A good overview of how the process unfolds, players, objectives, legal issues, and procedures is provided. Managers at a financially distressed operation typically carry a different toolbox of experience and skills, and therefore, this book would be well worth the introduction to the topic.

However, for investors this book is somewhat superficial and lacks the roll-up-your-sleeves education neccessary for investing. In most cases, senior management is sacked because creditors understandably have little confidence in those who may have mismanaged or were responsible for the business's failure in the first place. Thus, the audience that I presumed above may not be appropriate nor the majority of individuals who surface after a Plan.

For investors or external parties, I urge you to consider:

"Distressed Debt Analysis: Strategies for Speculative Investors" by Stephen G. Moyer. It is more expensive, but its a much better book on this topic. Moyer is a stronger writer and seems to be more experienced in the matter than G. Newton. Both books do not include the 2005 Bankruptcy Code reforms, so you may wish to brush up on that separately.

Very practical reference, "thin" on theory and case studies

Very useful and convenient reference guide for restructuring bankers / distressed debt investors. Probably too generic for experienced bankruptcy attorneys. The text and examples are efficiently presented and the author does a superb job of distilling the bankruptcy code into an easy-to-read format. The chapter on valuation is nothing more than the common stuff you read in any corporate finance book. A case study and a more extensive discussion on bankruptcy term sheets and negotiation tactics would have made this book more praiseworthy.

Russian literature

This is simply a collection of great Russian literary works - from Dostoevsky, Lermontov, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Chehov (I may be missing an author or two) - in Russian. Yes, the text within is not in English, but in the original Russian form. I would recommend this anyone of mid to advanced level Russian proficiency, as on the margins of the texts it clarifies the meaning of many antiquated Russian words and phrases, and also provides a few definitions of some non-traditional words. These works are also much more beautiful to read in Russian than in English, however that may be a personal bias of mine. English translation tends to ruin most literature that has origins elsewhere. Either way, it is worth reading these authors in their original form if you have the ability.

Easily the most important recipe reference for your kitchen

`Sauces, 2nd Edition ' by leading food teacher and writer James Peterson is high on my list of important, valuable single subject cookbooks which should be in the kitchen library of any serious amateur chef or professional chef in training.

The very first impression is the very large number of named sauces listed in the table of contents. And, it should be no surprise at all that almost every one of these sauces has a French name, even if the sauce is based on a non-French ingredient such as Sauce Hongroise based on paprika and Sauce Porto based on Port (originating in Portugal). Of the chapters covering eighteen different kinds of sauce, only one, the chapter on `Salad Sauces, Vinaigrettes, Salsas, and Relishes' has even the slimmest majority of recipes with a non-French cant, with its large selection of Spanish and New World salsas, south Asian chutneys, Greek mint lamb sauce, and American cranberry sauce.

The book opens with a short history of sauces, which becomes more interesting the more you know about Medieval and Renaissance cooking. The book even gives something missing from books on medieval cooking, the outline of an actual recipe for the ubiquitous verjuice, which was the Medieval and Renaissance source for sour tastes, which could be prepared from either grapes or apples. Just for fun, Peterson gives a few samples of Medieval and Renaissance recipes. The most interesting observation I found for culinary history was the statement that in the Middle Ages, sauces were thickened by pureeing meat, which is not at all surprising, as Medieval nobility looked down on all vegetable products (such as flour?) and preferred animal ingredients and spices in their dishes. The high point of the last three centuries for sauce making was the advent of more broadly based cookbooks for regional and bourgeois cooking and the systemization of classic sauce making by Antonin Careme, the `father of modern French cooking' (See Ian Kelly's biography of Careme, `Cooking for Kings').

The quality and authority of this book, especially with the added weight of a second enlarged and corrected edition is such that it is much more useful to state why you need this book rather than try to criticize it or find improvements.

First, this book is the very best reference I can think of when you need a sauce and don't remember how to make it or want to improve on the last time you made it. This use is valuable even if you never make any sauces other than vinaigrettes, marinara sauce, gravies, and bechamel sauces for Mac and cheese or creamed chipped beef. This book is my standard reference for all such purposes and it has NEVER let me down! The existence of this book always makes me wonder why restaurant chefs always include a chapter of pantry recipes for stocks and sauces. Except for the really finicky writers such as Judy Rodgers (Zuni Café) and Thomas Keller (French Laundry, Bouchon), Peterson's recipes will be about as good as you will find in any restaurant chef's book. So, you may prefer coming to this book even when an author gives us his version, as this will mean that all your stocks and sauces will be made from a common point of view and a common palate. This book is better than any other source in that it simply has everything you can possibly need.

Second, this book gives excellent recipes for sauce-based dishes, especially for seafood such as lobster, shrimp, salmon, clams, and scallops. For many fish dishes, the sauce is the dish, as cooking the fish is usually no more than the ten minutes it takes to poach, broil, bake, sautee, or fry the little critter(s).

Third, the book is an excellent source when you need alternatives. You need a fancy sauce for lobster, but you don't have time to create a stock from lobster shells and go through all the other steps needed for a good shellfish sauce. If you really need to impress, consider a homemade remoulade or aioli (variations on mayonnaise), which can be done in a few minutes in a food processor with eggs, oil, and a little mustard, plus flavorings.

Fourth, this book is simply the very best source I can think of to enlarge your repertoire of basic dishes and elements of dishes which can be swapped in to change a simple steamed vegetable into an elegant side dish. I am constantly pleased with the power of serendipity, that chance encounter with a great, easy recipe which enables you to cook up a yummy dish without having to consult a cookbook, let alone remember in which book the recipe was. My very first use of this book produced such an encounter when I was looking up the recipe for beurre blanc and discovered beurre citron (lemon butter sauce). This encounter also revealed that there is a considerable mystique connected with beurre blanc, as it is considered difficult to make. As I make it regularly as a dressing for fish, I can assure you that it is relatively easy and worth the small difficulty involved. It is also interesting to learn from this book that beurre blanc was also one of the sharpest weapons of Nouvelle Cuisine in banishing flour based sauces from restaurant sauces. So, with one fell swoop, you can be trendy, healthy, and haute cuisine with a single recipe. Wow!

If you wish to be a serious cook, you need this book!

This tome on sauce making is easily the most thorough coverage I have ever been exposed to. Well, it's the only one I've been exposed to, and I doubt there is anything as complete as this.

Readable, in-depth, expansive, edifying, and complete.

This is a book that needs to be studied and intellectually digested over a period of time as if one were attending college to become a world class chef. This is professional material and should be treated accordingly.

A prized gift for the professional, the potential professional, and the (really) serious home cook.

That being said, if you want to just whip up a quick sauce in the pan, I'm not sure this will serve your needs. There are dozens of sauce recipes, and they're good, but the idea behind the book is to teach you how to use a particular technique, then apply your knowledge in your own unique way. This is a "get a PHD in sauces", not a whip-it-up-quick index card recipe book.

Theory begets Praxis

'Sauces' is a well written book and a fascinating read; the organization takes a bit of getting used to. It covers the principles of Escoffier, makes that practical, and does some marvelous delving into contemporary sauces of all sorts.

Being a home chef I'm still absorbing and trying a lot of advice Peterson gives here. I use it to supplement other things I may be working on, because in some way shape or form, it almost always comes down to having a great sauce to go with what you're having for dinner, be it simple or complex. And this definitely helps in that department.

Need a luscious brown sauce for an impressive meal? How about a mayo made with a nice lobster infused oil for a special sandwich or salad? Why not improve the flavor of your tomato sauces? What about thickening your sauces with purees? Unless it's an integral sauce of course, but even then... this is all evolving even as it adheres to tried and true methods, isn't it?

The book appears to be aimed towards the professional reader who may be wondering, aside from the myriad vagaries of saucemaking, how on earth to incorporate these sauces into a service schedule. Seriously, how do you keep your Sauce Americaine alive for hours with all that fresh lobster coral in it? One no longer has to wonder.

It's not a book for everyone, especially if you just want a primer. It does some laying out of steps on the how's, but the concentration is on the why's. If you're looking for an informative and experiential discussion on the art of Saucing, with recipes to boot, then here it is.

It's a great for anyone interested in making better sauces.

Negotiating primer....not much more.

Being in the professional negotiation game, I thoroughly enjoy reading books which describe and tutor the subject. Although the current market is lousy with negotiating treatises, there are a few that stand out. Fisher and Ury's GETTING TO YES seems to be my favorite, one I return to time and again. However, I believe it healthly to step outside conventional wisdom and somewhat static norms to expand one's knowledge base. Although I had no idea of the content, quality or readability of GUERRILLA NEGOTIATING, I took a flyer on it as it "looked" like it might be of some interest.
Authors Levinson, Smith and Wilson have been working together for some time now promoting the "Guerrilla" books, seminars, tapes, etc. and have been quite successful, commercially. Although this is my first "Guerilla" book, I know of their successes and common acceptance within many business circles. However, I don't judge a book or theory based on the opinions of others so, of course, I had to buy this book to determine if it had the content described in the hype.
The easy answer is that yes, indeed, this book contains the basics of negotiation theory and time-tested schemes and strategies. The problem I had with GUERRILLA NEGOTIATING was its complete lack of fluidity and cogence. Its almost as though the authors "bulleted" the book and a ghost writer took their words verbatim without the benefit of explanatory offsets. This book does very little to describe complex situations with offered solutions and options. Remember, when reading a non-fiction book AND if one is a serious reader of non-fiction, the reader will be looking for that ONE gem within the book to add to his/her repretoire. This book is basic in nature and lacked the ability to truly explain the negotiating process. Without an explanation of the framework and processes, a new negotiatior will be totally lost. And, if one is attempting to put to work the Guerrilla tactics, they will most likely present their case in a staggered, illogical, and perhaps, unprofessional manner as the authors failed to bring together the process of "beginning-to-end." This is my main gripe about the book.
To say that the book is not "Guerrilla" in nature would be a dramatic misstatement. The authors present a variety of tactics to move negotiations along including, well, a water gun. Yep, a water gun. The authors posit that if negotiations are bogged down or if you are having a difficult time moving a decisionmaker, bring a water gun to the table and threaten (or begin) to shoot him. Now, in a sales setting and depending on the sophistication of the other party, this "might" work. In a professional setting, this is tantamount to death. Lack of common sense given the facts and circumstances of a particular situation can be the death knell of a pending transaction.
Nevertheless, I cannot say this is a bad book. The book presents the materials necessary for the new negotiatior and, even some level of information for the seasoned negotiator. It is interesting that once a negotiator establishes a style, he/she just looks for ways to enhance that style. This book could fill that role.
Bottom line....if you're new to negotiating, this book will provide "glimpse-level" insight into the process. Don't look for the proverbial outline, its not there. The book doesn't present the reader with a process toward successful negotiations or even negotiation theory for that matter. On the other hand, the book does present the reader with a trove of summarized negotiating nuggets that will most likely be beneficial to many initiates. Further, the book provides summary resource materials.
CONTENT = great; READABILITY = poor.

Silly advice, incoherent ramble, uninspiring, plain awful

This is like a tastless and overcooked minestrone soup (it gives you gas and stomach cramps, but no nutrients or energy), a hodge-podge mix of simple, often silly little issues and ideas, anything authors could connect with negotiation, no matter how losely!

Video, voice mail, checking your counterpart's horoscope (honest!), furniture, fax machine, sex, smoke, music, lawyers, laptop computers (all actual subtitles),you name it, it is all here, in this incoherent, silly mess. Some stuff is even repeated verbatim on various pages! A double insult!

Example #1: under sources of power, the authors list only 3: power(?), information and time. And that takes half a page and that is that. Hardly unorthodox stuff, highly superficial. Hey, power as a source of power, brilliant!

Example #2: Food (subtitle) Hunger is a very primal motivator. ... In a sales contest, the losers take the winners out for dinner. The winners eat steak, the losers eat beans.

Firstly, when something is primal, how can it be "very". It is like saying "this book is very first on the list of titles to be avoided!"

Secondly, now I know why there is so much hot stinky air in many negotiations! Those losers ate beans ...

Verdict: A blatant and transparent attempt to capitalise on the popularity of Guerilla Marketing books. I don't want to waste more of my, and more importantly, your precious time reviewing this mess. Did I waste my money buying this? I did. And I am not happy! I even tried selling this book on e-bay, but nobody wanted it. Smart bidders. Avoid like a bird flu.

Recommendation

I would recommend this book for anyone looking to gain an advantage in a negotiation. It is full of proven techniques and examples to help the reader better understand their uses and effects. The book is not so much a textbook on the art of negotiation, but focuses on letting the reader know what challenges await them and how to best deal with these challenges when they arise. Many of the techniques listed in the book must be practiced over and over again to become fully effective. However, even if these techniques are not practiced or the reader is not a frequent negotiator, the text provides enough easy to understand information that no one should feel taken advantage of in a negotiation situation again
