An excellent information about a the world of pastry!

As a student in culinary school, this gave me a clear understanding of what to expect in the food industry, the differences between a chef & a pastry chef, and what personality profiles fit each position. It was also entertaining to learn the inspirations of today's top pastry chefs. Very similar to "Becoming a Chef", by A. Dournenberg, but from a pastry perspective. I read the entire book in 3 days! Worth every penney.

This book is full of information from the people who have found success in the world of pastry. They tell about what training they received and how helpful it was to their careers, what their day is like, how they come up with new ideas, and what they believe the future of pastry is.
The writing style lacks snap and, occasionally, clarity. The content of the chapter doesn't always exactly match the chapter title. But it is still a good resource for someone who is interested in the pastry business because the chefs that were interviewed for the book really love what they do. Their passion comes through, which I found to be inspiring.

This book proves that just because you're a good pastry chef, doesn't mean you should write about pastry chefs! The writing is so boring that it reads like a term paper written by someone who couldn't care less. The information on the history of pastry is at times inaccurate (which wouldn't be such a big deal but they should have fact checkers, right?) and even a photo at the beginning of the book was mislabeled, in a way that showed the person thought no one would be able to tell. Other captions should have been left out such as "Pineapple" underneath a photograph of a pineapple. On the other hand, I always love to hear what chefs have to say, and this is no exception. It's filled with recipes, there is a useful table of interesting flavor combinations and lots of good statements from pastry chefs, though much of it is the average deal -- about how important the quality of your ingredients are and whether to make a tower of food or to keep presentation simple -- so, while I personally enjoy this kind of thing, I recommend it with reservations.

Very easy and practical guide to writing quickly & efficient

Very easy and practical guide to writing quickly & efficiently! I bought this book because I am tired of writing everything in longhand and I'm not a very fast typist. I am currently writing a book and am tired of getting hand cramps from so much writing. This book teaches a system of writing that is understandable & easy to learn. It has you write words the way they sound, and leaves out most of the vowels. Example: i wl cu u n - kr. Translation: I will see you in the car. I have heard bad reviews on how hard short hand is to learn because of all the symbols. Quickhand is a life saver! Buy the book. Even if you just use a few examples in writing it saves a lot of time and space when transcribing your ideas to paper.

On the other hand, if your maths background is not so strong, I would suggest a less technical book first, such as Mood, Graybill, Boes, which is easier to follow. Then once your basic Probability and Statistics knowledge is reasonable, you can move on to Rohatgi, which will give you a more technical cut.

Solid introduction to probability and statistics

I used this book in one of my advanced probability courses, and it helped me to improve my understanding of the theory behind probability. It definitely requires a background in probability and as the author says it's not a "cookbook", but a mathematics text.

The authors develop the theory based on Kolmogorov axioms which solidly founds probability upon measure theory. All the concepts, limit theorems and statistical tests are introduced with mathematical rigor. I'm giving this book 4 stars cause sometimes, the text gets extremely dense and technical. Some intuitive explanations would be helpful.

Though, this is the right book for the mathematicians, industrial engineers and computer scientists wishing to have a strong background in probability and statistics. But, beware: not suitable for the novice in undergrad.

I am a graduate student studying statistics and this is our departmental text for statistical theory. The authors of this text remind me of the type of teachers who come into class and write a lot of math on the board with little explanation. What explanation is given is of little help and nearly impossible to navigate. Open up to a random page and you won't know what section or chapter you are in because the publishers failed to include these as headings. Many of the exercises at the end of each section have incredibly difficult solutions requiring theorems included nowhere in the book or a great deal of algebraic manipulation and calculus and very little statistical ability.

I realize that this text was intended to be highly mathematical, but if you are interested in a graduate level text that explains statistical theory 100x better than this text, see Casella and Berger's. The only reason my department uses this text instead is because a professor is buddies with the author.

My classmates and I complain about this text constantly. It is truly a nightmare.

Weak sister to other John Wiley Classics

As a graduate professor who teaches several course on M&A, I've chosen two other efforts from publisher John Wiley for this year's curriculum over Pat Gaughan's updated version of his old book. Jeffrey Hooke's "Practical Guide to Doing the Deal" covers most of the same material in a more interesting style and "Winning at Mergers & Acquisitions" shows my students how all of this applies to the real world. Mark Clemente & David Greenspan, authors of "Winning at M&A", helped my students to understand the business rationale behind deals and brought to light many of the reasons so many corporate combinations fail. In addition, the juicy chapters on strategy, due diligence and culture and a whole section on integration best practices -- I feel -- will prepare serious readers on the topic and students of business alike for the M&A challenges that actually exist in corporate America today. Case studies and testaments on what works and what doesn't from corporate VPs and CEOs involved in mergers and acquisitions make "Winning at M&A" the core content I've already added to next year's syllabus. As for John Wiley's reprinting of Gaughan's book, they probably should have asked Hooke and Gaughan to collaborate on an updated version rather than publish two versions of the same manuscript.

I throughly enjoyed reading Patrick Gaughan's book on Mergers, Acquisitions and Corportate Restrucurings. I am the president of a printing firm and was thinking along the lines of merging my company with another interested party down the road. I purchased Gaughan's book and it helped me understand how mergers worked in an easy to understand format. I have become more educated in this field by reading his book which would help me make better decisions in the future of my business. I highly recommend this to any professor teahing this course or for any CEO or COO who is also thinking along the lines of consolidation.

This is a professional (but easily readable) monography. It is very comprehensive and can be used as both a textbook and a handbook. The author is a well-known expert on the subject and he conveys his knowledge to the reader. Among the many books available, this one is the likeliest to be "the only one you must have if you can afford only one".

I have been studying hypnotism for many years now. Saying that when I got this book I read it from front to back. It is a excellent resource for anyone practicing hypnotism.

Warning though: If you like the idea of hypnotism as a fad don't buy this book. This book is for people who use it as a desk reference and source of knowledge to help further their skills in the field of hypnotism.

If someone was going down the path of becoming a hypnotist as a professional then I would recommend this book to them first before any other.

The Practice of Hypnotism 2nd ed. by Andre M. Weitzenhoffer is both a scientific and clinical text. The author is indeed a master in both areas. He is well versed in most of the material in the field. It is a complete coverage of the field. It is an outstanding text.

The latter book gives all of the methods in square root filtering algorithms and derivations and more. If the "Asian Reviewer" is most interested in Kalman filtering, he/she would be better advised to buy a book on Kalman filtering.

Almost completely useless book ...

Of course the experience of the authors is great but none of it you can use either in your study or research. It is impossible to learn about Kalman filtering from this book as well as to improve your knowledge in this area. Book is intended for professionals in this area but professionals will not need it. Many intersting facts but no detailed information. For example one can know that the square root filtering method came from James Potter but there is nothing more about this method from this book. Otherwise you have to study sources of the software (included). Book is written as advertizing of author's skills and nothing else. Too much about nothing ...
