About the Author
Robett A. Meyers was manager of Chemical Process Technology at TRW and is now President of RAMTECH Limited. A resident of Redondo Beach, CA, Dr. Meyers is the inventor or co-inventor of a number of broadly used engineering processes, and has managed projects in nearly every facet of the petroleum refining industry. He is a senior member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, a member of the American Chemical Society, and serves on the UCLA Chemistry Department Advisory Board. His complete biography appears in Who's Who in the World.

A well-organized 2-volume set with an impressive list of domestic and international contributors. The alphabetical arrangement and index help novices to this field find their way around in the encyclopedia. This condensed version focuses on describing and explaining environmental pollution and cleanup and leaves the more in-depth analysis to the 8-volume encyclopedia from which it is derived, published in the previous year. The articles are clearly written and well-illustrated.

A New Perspective on Chart Patterns

Many years ago, when I was a college student in China, one of my most enjoyable moments was to sit in library reading Encyclopedia Britannica, which always gave me new perspectives for the world. It was natural that the title of this book attracted my attention and I bought it immediately. What a wonderful reference book to add to my trading library! I only wish I had it before the market crashed in 2000, when I lost all my trading accounts.

This reader-friendly book consists of Part One Chart Patterns (53 chapters) and Part Two Event Patterns (10 chapters). Each chapter focuses on a specific chart pattern with informative details. The RESULTS SNAPSHOP and TOUR are very useful to give readers a general idea of each chart pattern. The IDENTIFICATION GUIDELINES and TRADING TACTICS give readers a practical trading guide. The STATISTICS shows the author's new approach to analyze each chart pattern scientifically. The SAMPLE TRADE is a fictitious story to illustrate a trading circumstance. The FOCUS ON FAILURES provides necessary warnings for each chart pattern. All the technically complicated information is smartly rendered in layperson's language. I think if every trader (day traders, swing traders, position traders, and buy-and-hold investors) reads this book, we will be on the same page and will act similarly. Then, our trading will become more consistently profitable.

Of course, this is not a book to read from cover to cover. Instead, it is a must-have reference book. Any time I found a chart pattern showing a potential for profits, I checked it with this encyclopedia and designed a proper plan to trade with the pattern. This way, I learned while I earned. However, this book is not a crystal ball, but a great trading tool, which you should master. Should we ask more from a book?

The Bible!

Save yourself at least a year of back testing strategies using tradestation and collecting statistics.

This book is an encyclopedia, not a "psychological" trading type book. This is dry and technical information, statistics, numbers, etc. I wouldnt have it any other way. Make sure you have a trading platform that will allow you to put this information to good work.

A MUST

If I were to be deprived of all the trading books in my collection but one, that would be The Encyclopedia. Unlike other literature on the patterns, in this book you will not find clauses like "most of the time", "usually", "seldom". All the information as it's related to the pattern trading is thoroughly backtested.

Few words about the author are due here. I do not believe you will find more ethical individual in the trading community than Mr. Bulkowski is. Unlike others who use their books as an advertising medium to lure you into subscription to their services and seminars, the author simply does not do that. His web site is FREE and he sells nothing but his book.

I can't even say that this book is highly recommended or you should buy this book... Nothing like that. I believe you owe yourself having this book on your desk 24/7 if you are to trade chart patterns. If you do not trade chart patterns then... you should not trade at all as all the "indicators" are nothing but derivatives of the price and volume behavior. Turn of all that noise and focus on patterns and volume and that's what this book is teaching you to do.

Presents new research revealing the interplay between classical analysis and modern computation and complexity theory. Two intimately interwoven threads run though the text: the arithmetic-geometric mean (AGM) iteration of Gauss, Lagrange, and Legendre and the calculation of pi[l.c. Greek letter]. These two threads are carried in three directions. The first leads to 19th century analysis, in particular, the transformation theory of elliptic integrals, which necessitates a brief discussion of such topics as elliptic integrals and functions, theta functions, and modular functions. The second takes the reader into the domain of analytic complexity--Just how intrinsically difficult is it to calculate algebraic functions, elementary functions and constants, and the familiar functions of mathematical physics? The answers are surprising, for the familiar methods are often far from optimal. The third direction leads through applications and ancillary material--particularly the rich interconnections between the function theory and the number theory. Included are Rogers-Ramanujan identities, algebraic series for pi[l.c. Greek letter], results on sums of two and four squares, the transcendence of pi[l.c. Greek letter] and e[ital.], and a discussion of Madelung's constant, lattice sums, and elliptic invariants. Exercises.

Valuable, unique

This book fills an important and very neglected place in the mathematics curriculum. We suppose we understand the usual, foundational transcendental functions, like the logarithm, exponential, trig functions, and several others. Still, most of us don't really know practical approaches to computing the values of these functions efficiently. We may punch a calculator button or even look at an old tables book, but we ourselves don't always have good ways to compute the values from scratch. If you consult most numerical analysis books, they will give approaches to other computations and even approaches to computing higher transcendental functions, but these foundational calculations are neglected. So, this book is practically the only careful and complete record in book form of the ways these computations ought to be done.

These topics are often bypassed in the curriculum as offered in most schools---even decent schools. So, there are a lot of students (like me) who will want to consult this book as a way to fill in glaring holes in the existing education. It is, of course, entirely possible to use this as a successful text for its own special topics course. That is seldom done, but it would be reasonable. The writing is clear. The scholarship is excellent. There is no reason to complain about this book. The only people who won't just LOVE this book are those who don't care too much for writing that has lots of technical detail. If you're a "big picture" person and don't enjoy knowing the details that make an area craftsmanlike, then you might not enjoy this book as much as I do. I do love it entirely, and feel grateful it is available. Finally, I understand this isn't a great review. I just couldn't stand to see such a fine book with no reviews on Amazon. I invite you to write a more particular review and replace mine.

Truly terrific book! Educational AND entertaining both.

As a professor of business administration for adult continuing education classes in Silicon Valley, I was delighted to discover this title. Whether you are a savvy businessperson wanting to know more about the possibilities of the Internet; a Web-savvy entrepreneur; or just interested in this whole Internet phenomena(and confused by all the jargon that's out there), this is a great read. I'll be using it in my graduate seminars next academic year. What's truly amazing is how Seidner and LaPlante managed to write a book that will be relevant for some years at a time when technology and business is changing at the speed of light. Highly recommended.

Sad but interesting for history's sake

A great example of how the hype and speculation of the late 1990's led to the bursting of the internet bubble. The book typifies the kind of thinking that got everyone into trouble: No real understanding of how technology works: No viable business model for profit; Hysterical optimism and conclusions without solid critical thinking. Anyone who had half a clue back then would have read this book and said "This is exactly what is wrong with digital entertainment today". Anyone who still believes what this book has to say is crying over his useless e-toys stock right now. Read it only if you want to better understand why things turned sour.

Very cool. A fascinating (and nonjargony) book about the Web

I was skeptical. I manage a radio station (talk radio, golden oldies, etc.) and, frankly, hadn't believed all the hype about the Internet. This completely changed my mind. What I really liked was that I could actually *read* it--it told a story, and a truly compelling one at that. From the early days of radio to what's going to happen in coming decades. I'm a believer. There's gonna be a revolution. The chapter on "Family Feud" (how radio broadcasters and recording labels and artists and webcasters and folks like Microsoft are all going to be battling it out in cyberspace) had me on the edge of my chair. Totally cool. Did I say that already?

Great Book but Bad Printing Quality

I really like this book and the prequel. However, some pages are really badly printed. In some equations you cannot tell whether there is supposed to be a "+", a "-" or an equal "=" sign as there is not enough ink to read it.
Given the price of that book this shouldn't happen. This is Wiley's fault.

Very useful

Atom Photon Interactions is an excellent text for atomic and optical physics. I refer back to the review material---transition amplitudes, quantum electrodynamic fundamentals, etc--- over and over again. Naturally, these sections are very brief, and the book works best along side Cohen-Tannoudji's more elementary texts Quantum Mechanics and Photons and Atoms, or their equivalents.
The later chapters are rich in techniques and intuition applicable to atom-trapping, spectroscopy, laser theory, etc. Cohen-Tannoudji covers a lot of material, and manages to link it all to a few basic fundamental principles. The book is extremely well-organized, with bite-sized sections and appendices to each chapter. An excellent collection of exercises with solutions is included in the back. Unfortunately, the text does not prompt the reader to try working these problems at appropriate times (sadly, I didn't realize the exercises were there until I'd been using the book for some time). Like Photons and Atoms, this is primarily a book for theorists; its one weakness, I feel, is that the principles, however clear, never seem connected to the actual numbers that an experimentalist or system designer can relate to.

This is one of the best books in the field of QED. I used it for self-study. Only downside (also upside) about it is that everything is explained so completely that the reaser might become a bit lazy at times to spend some intellectual effort. An excellent book for self-study.
