In a major new work on the father of psychoanalysis, Breger, Professor Emeritus of Psychoanalytic Studies at California Institute of Technology, synthesizes seminal earlier books such as Ernest Jones's four volume Life and Work of Sigmund Freud (1953) and Peter Gay's Freud: A Life for Our Time (1988), and provides a new reading of how Freud himself continually altered public and professional perceptions of himself. Breger is adept at reexamining and reinterpreting existing knowledge about Freud, such as how his entrenched pro-militarist feelings about the First World War manifested in his work; his misinformed and conservative disapproval of birth control; and his complicated view of both male and female homosexuality. In addition, Breger fairly evaluates new criticisms of the man and his work, particularly those of Freudian renegade Jeffrey Masson. Especially astute is Breger's delineation of how Freud's understanding of himself as a Jew, as well as the anti-Semitism of his times, contributed to his theories (although curiously he does not refer to any of Sander Gilman's noted work on this topic). Brilliant, fair and illuminating book that gave me a far deeper impression of Sigmund Freud and the positive and negative influences Freudian psychoanalytic theory has had on the field of psychiatry and our culture. Extremely well -researched and written.

A fresh and lucid account...

Many years ago, an old teacher of mine commented to me that the published writings about Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis could fill a suburban library. This could be a slight exaggeration, but the biographies and published essays that one can find on a university library catalogue, for example, reach a remarkable number. Even today, the interest in the man and his work continues unabated, more in the general humanities, however, than psychology itself. What is this unrelenting fascination about Freud that draws so many people to his life and work? This is a hard question to answer, but an interesting one to consider. In the latest contribution to the Freud canon, ~Freud- Darkness in the Midst of Vision~ Louis Breger attempts a somewhat new interpretation of Freud and psychoanalysis, and a successful one.
In the 'Background and Sources' at the back of the text, Breger writes an interesting comment: he states that there are basically three camps or perspectives of the man - the first are the 'fiercely' loyal combatants, the defenders of psychoanalytic orthodoxy; Freud's words are considered gosple and no divergence is permitted. In the second camp are the sharp and brutal critics, who dismiss Freud and psychoanalysis in its entirety. The third category (where Breger places himself) are not worshiping sycophants or radical critics, but those who see the significance of Freud's work, and acknowledge his contributions with a balanced assessment of the man and psychoanalysis in general. This book manages to capture the spirit of the third cartegory with brilliance of insight, objectivity and compassion.
I've read many accounts of Freud and the history of psychoanalysis from hagiography, (Ernest Jones' three-volume mythology) to chatty, uninformed rumour mongering, (Paul Ferris -Dr. Freud A Life) and found Breger's to be the most clinically informed and fair of them all.
Breger set out to dismantle the many myths surrounding the history of Freud and psychoananlysis. This book is straightforward historical revisionism at its most readable form. He writes of the origins of psychoanalysis and its intellectual development against its historical milieu, that gives the reader a true context in which the movement was born and the reasons why it catapulted into international popularity after the First World War. The text cuts through the folklore and the intentionally generated romance of the subject, revealing a clear well-researched account, which remains as out of the ordinary as the myths themselves.
Even with all of Freud's faults and flaws of personality, his steel-like dogmatism and refusal to accept any further developments (contrary to his own) from his followers or divergence from his questionable theories, continues to incite interest and fascination generation after generation. It is his utter strength of personality that was his true genius, that reaches out from the past and grabs our attention. To dismiss this highly original thinker is a mistake. And Louis Breger's ~Freud - Darkness in the Midst of Vision~ emphasises this fact in a lucid, fresh and graceful manner.

Analyst, Analyze Thyself! -- Wonderful book.

This is a fine book which is well-written on many levels. The style is lucid and friendly: Dr. Breger's writing is surprisingly accessible even to lay people like me.
Many of the insights it offers into Freud's own thinking and development are original and valuable. For instance, the fact that Freud, wanting to become a "great scientist", chose for his models revolutionaries like Kepler and Darwin rather than healers like Pasteur and Koch [Intro. p. 2] struck me right from the outset as an eye-opening observation. The fact that some of Freud's most famous theories were developed utterly without any scientific backup or citation to experimental/ observational evidence (such as the theory of penis envy, discussed at several places in the book but particularly at 332-334) comes to light in the pages of this book with humor, wit, and great persuasive force. Viewed purely as a critique of Freud, this book is wonderful because it presents an original and persuasive view which I don't think has ever been seen before. It is useful also because by reading it, you may re-visit all the reading about Freud you did in your college days, and it is satisfying to have such an overview available in one book that's fun to read.
But the book is interesting also because of the extraordinary vividness with which it portrays Freud's world: the Jewish ghetto, and the intellectual world of Vienna before WWII. If you read this book for no other purpose than to dip yourself into that world, and to remind yourself of the ideals to which its inhabitants subscribed, you will still be satisfied and edified.
Dr. Breger is a professional psychoanalyst, and the "point of view" reflected in these pages shows both sharp powers of observation and, at the same, time, the kind of warmth that only serious professionals can develop when they are committed - as Dr. Breger seems to be - to helping people. Freud is of course beyond help, although it seems he might have benefitted from a course of therapy with this author! But Dr. Breger speaks in a tone of voice that makes us feel that he wants to help us, his readers, see something clearly and move out of any fixation with respect to Freud in which we might have been trapped.

Decent but Outdated

The layout of this book could have used some work, and I understand the later editions do a better job, but it nevertheless provided a foundation of networking and datacomm principles. The material is out of date, so since there is a newer edition out, I would recommend it over this edition.

I was required to purchase this book at LSU for a class. It contains great information, but like many books chosen by professors it is sorely over-priced for information that can be learned from much cheaper reference books. Lose two stars for ripping off poor students.

Thorough and well-organized reference

After an introductory review of the literature, Gen and Cheng write a chapter on each class of optimization problems that have been solved with genetic algorithms. Within the chapters they systematically describe each technique that has been used to apply genetic algorithms to the particular problem. Descriptions include the underlying math and a step-wise procedure for implementation. These are backed up with multiple graphs and illustrations, and copious references (737 references in all). A few more actual examples would have helped, especially in the Multiobjective Optimization chapter. The clear organization and number of references make this an excellent reference for the practitioner, but the level of detail could make it difficult for someone new to the technique.

Excellent, I use mine all the time ...

The only complaint I might have with this book is the format, it's a big book, and given how often I need it, a smaller handbook (like the CRC handbook) would be more convenient. But then that might hurt the readability.

The book itself however is awesome, comprehensive, readable, plenty of illustrations, minimum of jargon, and useful for engineers and scientists.

Finally, a book about futures options that anyone can use!

Mr. Ansbacher has done what seemed impossible: he has written a book about the complex world of commodity options- and more specifically S&P 500 index options- that doesn't require a Ph.D. to understand. And to boot, the ideas in the book actually work.
I am a professional commodity broker, and like many of you I've bought books about the complex world of futures trading, only to get home and find that a background in computational physics was required to get any further than the introduction page. What Mr. Ansbacher has done is to demystify a subject that many people (even professionals) don't really understand, even though they've read books on the subject and pretend to know: option trading.
Mr. Ansbacher's approach isn't what one would call simplistic. To the contrary, his approach is very exacting, methodical, and concrete. It's just that he has avoided lapsing into language that most readers couldn't grasp. And his approach will make many people who speculate in commodity options think twice about what they are doing.
The complex world of commodities is one where the investing public is constantly pitted against the professional traders, with predictable results. Mr. Ansbacher attempts to show the average (losing) trader the folly of what it is he's doing, and provide a roadmap to success and greater understanding. Anyone who wonders why he is losing money trading options should close his account, buy this book, and "go back to school." Highly recommended.

A Clear, Concise Overview with an *Opinion*

The strengths of this book are the clarity with which it has been written, the numerous practical examples provided, and most importantly, the opinions which the author, an experienced options trader, freely provides. Ansbacher has avoided dealing with the complexities of options such as the Black-Scholes pricing model, the greek sensitivities, etc., instead focussing on the basics: common strategies and analyzing what to do when things don't work as planned (in contrast to Fontanills' whose examples always make money!), but it is his experience which really shines. Reading this book is straightforward, owing to its conversational tone and is really like having an experienced options trader at your disposal -- Ansbacher is no flake, he's traded SPX options for years and runs a successful hedge fund....This one belongs on the bookshelf with McMillan and Natenberg...

Finally--solid strategies for success!

If you are serious about trading options, BUY and study this book! Ansbacher explains the concepts needed to understand options in clear and nontechnical terms. Often he is brutally honest in ways the force you to think. The most valuable parts of the book are the strategies that he provides for each type of trade to inform you of what action to be prepared to take if (and when!) the market turns against you. Ansbacher repeatedly tells you that it is not easy to make money with options, but the thesis of the book is that if you approach options trading with some of the strategies he shares, you will be able to keep the premiums you collect and not get an ulcer. His ideas about trading two-strike prices out and about how to easily figure the margin requirements on options are well worth the price of the book. The purpose of this book is not to tell you how to find good stocks for writing options; the book's purpose is to provide you with sound strategies to be successful once you identify stocks in which you are interested. If you want to identify the good stocks, spend a few dollars and sign up for a program like VectorVest. Then you will have both the process and the content for success...
