Country-by-Country Profiles, Volume 2, Intellectual Property in the Global Marketplace, 2nd Edition, by Melvin Simensky, Lanning G. Bryer,

Intellectual property exploitation is a hot topic in international business. The cost and difficulty of introducing new products to the consumer markets leads companies to take better advantage of existing intellectual property, which can include patents, trademarks, technology, and copyrights. Companies with intellectual property must understand the value of their own property, extract the absolute maximum during their licensing and joint venture deals, make themselves attractive to investors who may be wary of investing in a company with no tangible assets, and protect their product from infringement. What makes this process more difficult is that they must now also do this on a global level, working in multiple foreign markets that have diverse and constantly changing laws. This set aims to help companies gain an advantage in the global market. It focuses on developing trends in valuation, exploitation, and the protection of intellectual property.

From the Inside Flap
This book is a comprehensive, easily-referenced guide to understanding and managing the risks typically encountered by business organizations in the United States as they make and receive payments. An understanding of these risks has become necessary in today’s environment, as evolving technologies, new laws and procedures, and the problems of check and electronic fraud have become inextricably intertwined.

Managing the Risks of Payment Systems is written for corporate executives, treasurers, funds managers, controllers, auditors, bankers, and their respective legal counsels. This book provides a basic understanding of the risks of the payment systems, how the law allocates those risks among the payor, the payee, and the collecting and paying banks, and how to best manage those risks. As the authors declare in Chapter One: "We didn’t know" is no excuse.

The authors explain how to develop procedures to control the payment system risks and how to maintain and protect the legal rights of the parties to banking agreements. Chapters discuss:

  • Checks and the risk of fraud
  • Wire transfers and liability for fraud and errors
  • The risks in the automated clearinghouse (ACH) system
  • Commerce and payments in cyberspace
  • How to identify and manage corporate payment system risks, including systems disruptions, backup, and physical security

The authors invite readers to chat at www.paymentsystemsrisks.com.

  • Automated clearinghouse payments (ACH) and its rules
  • Who is liable for what?
  • Do’s and don’ts for banking agreements

Helpful Primer on Managing Payment System Risk
By L. Masonson
Experienced financial professionals with years of practical operating experience wrote this recently published book. Therefore, it is not surprising that this book methodically covers the principal payment systems (checks, ACHs, wires and global transfer systems - CHIPS and SWIFT), their basic workings, risk, and how to manage those risks. The subject matter of this book is critical for corporate financial managers - CFOs, Treasurers, Cash Managers, Controllers - as well as bank operations officers, and bank and corporate auditors.
Since check fraud is currently a $10 billion a year problem an entire chapter is devoted to checks, their characteristics, the prevailing regulations, the risk parameters, and how to manage that risk including using internal controls, bank controls, check stock controls, and positive pay controls. The authors warn corporations that they should be alert to "gross negligence and willful conduct clauses" in bank agreements which may put undue and unnecessary risk on them.
Wire transfer, defined to include FedWire, CHIPS and SWIFT, are covered in two chapters. The first chapter covers the transfer from the originating bank to the receiving bank. The next topics reviewed include: liability for fraudulent transfers, managing risks in the links of the wire systems, and the bank's perspective on wire transfer risk. The second chapter on wire transfers focuses on completing the transfer and the rules for handing errors.
The Automated Clearing House (ACH), the second type of electronic funds transfer, in addition to wires, is covered in a separate chapter. A basic discussion of this payment type is provided along with a definition of the types of ACHs and how they are processed. The ACH origination process is covered and the warranties and liabilities of the originating bank are examined.
Other topics reviewed in this section include ACH prenotification, reversal of duplicate and erroneous payments. The authors then examine the receipt of entries, returns, change and acknowledgements. Lastly, settlement and accountability, cross-border payments, US Government payments, and ACH payment system risks are reviewed.
[In light of the recent coverage in an August 2003 issue of the American Banker newspaper, corporate treasury managers should make sure that they setup special ACH debit blocks on their bank accounts to reduce the risk of ACH fraud.]
An entire chapter is devoted to Electronic Commerce and Internet payments. Corporate financial managers are well advised to bone up on this material to ensure that they protect their corporate assets from potential fraud in these two exploding areas. There are a cyber crooks and hackers who are looking to defraud any company that doesn't protect itself on the Internet. Also included in the book is an 8-page glossary.
The last chapter covers the specifics of controlling corporate payment system risks as opposed to risks faced by financial institutions. Included in this chapter is a 5-page "Risk Management Crime Coverage Checklist." Additional material covered in this chapter are pointers on handling payment systems disruptions, managing check, wire, and ACH fraud.
In conclusion, this book covers all the bases on payments system risk. The readers will obtain a comprehensive view of the entire subject matter and be better prepared to face the challenges ahead once they realize the importance and understand the vulnerabilities in the existing payments systems.

Douglas McGregor, Revisited: Managing the Human Side of the Enterprise, by Gary Heil, Warren Bennis, Deborah C. Stephens

The words of Douglas McGregor, one of the fore-fathers of management theory and one of the top business thinkers of all time, cannot and should not be ignored. McGregor's vision of a more humanistic workplace may not have been widely accepted over three decades ago, but technological advancements that McGregor himself anticipated have paradoxically helped companies become more human. Viewing employees not as cogs in the machine but as living beings with individual goals-what McGregor called "the human side of the enterprise"-has proven to provide a remarkable competitive advantage.
Now, with the rise of the networked economy, the growing power of frontline workers, and the shift in power from mass producer to individual consumer, authors Gary Heil, Warren Bennis, and Deborah Stephens assert that McGregor's ideas are more important and relevant than ever before.
Douglas McGregor, Revisited emphasizes McGregor's lasting influence and updates his thinking with new concepts, fresh strategies, and modern implementation. This timely work traces McGregor's original thinking, which has emerged in current approaches that stress distributed leadership, open-minded appraisal techniques, and employee/customer commitment.
Highlighted throughout with gems of wisdom in McGregor's own words, the book describes the value of his theories for today's managers. The authors carefully outline how to put McGregor's thinking into practice in your own business so you can:
* Devise a better performance management system
* Form and supervise effective management teams
* Build cooperation instead of internal competition
* Cultivate an intrinsically motivating, values-driven workplace
* Create a cause worthy of employee commitment
Also featured are examples from a host of companies and leaders who have flourished under McGregor's approach. Authoritative and highly instructive, Douglas McGregor, Revisited offers new generations of managers important lessons from history and from the field.
Praise for Douglas McGregor, Revisited
"This book revisits in a contemporary manner the most important question facing management today: given what we know about human nature, how should work be managed so as to unleash the vast creative potential of human beings? The evidence is overwhelming that many people either come to an organization or can be appropriately led to exhibit the behavior McGregor characterized as 'Theory Y.' This book provides a 'how-to' approach for developing people at work and for establishing high performance organizations."-Joseph A. Maciariello, Horton Professor of Management
Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management, Claremont Graduate University and Claremont McKenna College. Author of Lasting Value: Lessons from a Century of Agility at Lincoln Electric
Douglas McGregor's seminal works, The Human Side of the Enterprise and The Professional Manager, debunked Taylorism and described a revolutionary way to manage people. He was the first to apply the findings in behavioral science to the world of business. Based on what had been learned about human behavior, McGregor explored the implications of managing people in a different manner than tradition dictated.
The nature of work today makes McGregor's ideas more relevant than ever before. This important book applies his thinking to today's business world, proving again that the human aspect of work is crucial to organizational effectiveness. It also suggests how you can change your thinking and implement his ideas in your own business and workplace.

Amazon.com Review
Now that we've been downsized and outsourced and reengineered and networked, management gurus are finally focusing on the one universal resource that has been staring them in the face all along: their so-called "human capital." The funny thing is, some of the best thinking on the subject was published more than four decades ago, when few senior business people were ready to listen. In essays like "New Concepts of Management" and books like The Human Side of Enterprise, the late MIT educator Douglas McGregor argued articulately that corporations are not merely machines, nor are workers simply cogs to run them. Now, in Douglas McGregor, Revisited, Gary Heil, Warren G. Bennis, and Deborah C. Stephens resurrect many of these prescient observations and place them in a context appropriate for our times. The three prominent leadership specialists open with "Why McGregor Matters," an extensive section in which his opinions are discussed as they relate to performance, cooperation, motivation, commitment, and other topics like teams. The authors conclude with selections from McGregor's work that address issues (including the changing composition of the industrial work force, job satisfaction, and paternalism) that remain as relevant today as the day they were written. --Howard Rothman

Review
"Amid the hype accompanying the launch of new business books, one title towers above the rest. Douglas McGregor, Revisited aims to make the work of one of the great management thinkers accessible to a new generation. The timing could not be better.... To disregard McGregor's work is to ignore the central dilemma of management." (The Times, September, 2000)

"It is a powerful reminder of key questions for organisations yesterday, today and tomorrow." (People Management, 14th September, 2000)

"Welcome resurrection of a great thinker and a guide to creating a value-driven organisation DNA." (Director, October 2000)

Wisdom Revisited
By Robert Morris
If a list were compiled of the most influential business thinkers, McGregor's name would be near the top of that list. This brilliant book explains why. The authors enable us to "revisit" the unique achievements of someone who is too often under-appreciated or, worse yet, ignored. According to Peter Drucker, "With every passing year, McGregor's message becomes ever more relevant, more timely, and more important." The material is organized as follows:
Part 1 Why McGregor Matters
Part 2 Selected Essays of Douglas McGregor
In the first part, the authors provide a brilliant introduction to the essays which then follow. They quote liberally from McGregor's classic work, The Human Side of Enterprise. Perhaps you are already familiar with Robert Owen (1771-1858) whom James O'Toole characterizes as "the Thomas Edison of social invention. He was the first to devise or advocate numerous practices in industrial relations, education, and social policy that are still considered progressive today, more than 130 years after his death." More than a century later, McGregor addresses many of the same issues which Owen did. For example:
1. Creating a workplace in which people are treated as human beings
2. Offering incentives and rewards which enable people to motivate themselves to produce work of consistently high quality
3. Viewing the work force as an investment, not as a cost
4. Supporting and nourishing the personal as well as professional development of that work force
5. Formulating means by which to measure worker performance accurately...and fairly
Here is a brief excerpt from The Human Side of Enterprise:
"The outstanding fact about relationships in the modern industrial organization is that they involve a high degree of interdependence. Not only are subordinates dependent upon those above them in the organization for satisfying their needs and achieving their goals, but managers at every level are dependent upon all those below them for achieving their own and organizational goals."
These observations by McGregor explain why it is no coincidence that, year after year, the companies rated "the best to work for" are the same companies which dominate their respective industries, the same companies which have the greatest market value.
In his various works, McGregor devotes substantial attention to two different theories which "are not managerial strategies. They are underlying beliefs about the nature of man that influence managers to adopt one strategy rather than another." The core assumptions of Theory X are that (1) managers alone must organize and control the work to be done, (2) workers must totally subordinate their needs to those of the organization, (3) without strict supervision, workers would be indifferent (perhaps resistant) to the organization's needs because (4) the average worker is indolent, lacks ambition, prefers to be supervised, is self-centered, and dislikes change.
The core assumptions of Theory Y are that (1) "People are not by nature passive or resistant to organizational needs.", (2) "The motivation, the potential for development, the capacity for assuming responsibility, the readiness to direct behavior toward organizational goals are all present in people. Management does not put them there.", (3) "It is the responsibility of management to make it possible to recognize and develop these human characteristics for themselves.", and (4) "The essential task of management is to arrange organization conditions and operation so that people can achieve their own goals best [italics] by directing their own [italics] efforts toward organizational objectives."
Thanks to Heil, Bennis, and Stephens, we now have in a single volume both a brilliant analysis of McGregor's ideas as well as an analysis of the implications of those ideas, and, a selection of McGregor's essays in which those ideas are introduced and developed. Who will gain the greatest value from this book? Those who now know little (if anything) about one of the most influential business thinkers. I agree with Drucker that, "With each passing year, McGregor's message becomes ever more relevant, more timely, and more important." I presume to suggest that that will continue to be true so long as there are organizations in which human beings have work to do.

Irresistible Retrospective on Managers Lacking Introspection
By Donald Mitchell
When I was in business school (back in the Dark Ages), McGregor was considered the finest thinker about organizational behavior. He grasped that behavioral science offered great promise for making organizations more effective and more desirable places to be.
Everyone was excited about the potential of his assumptions about people in the workplace: Employees want to do a good job; they will make extra effort to learn and accomplish more; they have the potential to much more; and it makes great sense to get everyone involved as much as possible. At the time, it seemed like the first breath of fresh air in the stale world of corporate bureaucracies. Although I haven't thought much about McGregor in over 20 years, I realize that I was profoundly influenced by his thinking.
Reading this fine book gave me a valuable new perspective on McGregor -- that a central weakness of many companies and managers is that the comapny's leadership is not consciously aware of what it assumes about its employees. While almost every company espouses humanistic and empowerment ideas and ideals, many continue to operate in the same old command and control way. Most of the focus is on creating carrots and sticks to manipulate behavior.
Why don't people get it? McGregor had figured out that managers don't think much about their assumptions about employees. McGregor made the important point that everyone needs to determine what those assumptions are (Can people be trusted? If yes, use Theory Y. If no, use Theory X). What happens now is that many people hold Theory X beliefs that employees cannot be trusted and but try to use Theory Y methods (that they can), and the mixed messages keep everyone confused. 'I want you to take full charge of this project, but check with me before doing anything.' Sound familiar?
In particular, managers don't really understand Maslow's hierarchy of needs. As simple needs are fulfilled, psychic needs become more important such as working on something that will make a difference. Chapters 6 and 7 are especially good on how intrinsic personal motivation is created.
This book is excellent in that it contains a retrospective perspective on McGregor as well as some of McGregor's own key essays. I especially enjoyed Warren Bennis's essay on the weaknesses in McGregor's argument: How do managers get their needs served if they are always servant leaders (see Joe Jaworski's excellent book, Synchronicity to get an answer to that) and what is the role of the environment on the needs of the worker in the workplace? Clearly, the Internet is one example of a new force that irresitibly is creating Theory Y contexts for accomplishment, independent of what managers do.
The main weakness of this book is that it does not point out that the limit to Theory Y was that McGregory did not give enough detail to make it possible to know exactly what to do. See Bill Jenson's book, Simplicity, for the significance of this mistake by McGregor.
Whether you believe that employees cannot be trusted or that they are your first line of offense and defense empowered on their own, you will benefit from reading and thinking about the questions and topics in this book. It can be an important step forward toward helping you build an irresistible growth enterprise.

How to unleash the vast creative potential of employees
By Azlan Adnan
Douglas McGregor's seminal works, The Human Side of Enterprise and The Professional Manager, debunked Taylorism and described a revolutionary way to manage people. He was the first to apply the findings in behavioural science to the world of business. Based on what had been learned about human behaviour, McGregor explored the implications of managing people in a different manner than tradition dictated.
Authors Gary Heil, Deborah Stephens and Warren Bennis assert that the nature of work today makes McGregor's ideas more important and relevant than ever before. This book revisits in a contemporary manner the most important question facing management today: given what we know about human nature, how should work be managed so as to unleash the vast creative potential of human beings? It applies McGregor's thinking to today's business world, proving again that the human aspect of work is crucial to organisational effectiveness. It also suggests how you can change your thinking and implement his ideas in your own business and workplace.
The authors carefully outline how to put McGregor's thinking into practice in your own business so you can devise a better performance management system, form and supervise effective management teams, build cooperation instead of internal competition, cultivate an intrinsically motivating, values-driven workplace and create a cause worthy of employee commitment.

Amazon.com Review
General John J. Pershing may not be as honored as American military heroes Washington, Lee, Grant, and MacArthur, but he outranked them all: He's the only man ever to hold the rank of six-star general. And he certainly earned each one, with a career spanning from the final frontier wars of the 18th century to his leadership in the Spanish-American War in 1898 to his pursuit of Mexican bandit Pancho Villa in 1916. Pershing is best remembered, of course, for commanding the American Expeditionary Force in the First World War, which helped bring the conflict to a successful conclusion for the Allies. Gene Smith is a skilled biographer with an eye for detail and a knack with anecdotes. His Pershing--often misunderstood as a cold and brutal character--comes alive on the pages of Until the Last Trumpet Sounds.

From Publishers Weekly
Best known for When the Cheering Stopped: The Last Years of Woodrow Wilson, Smith has a solid and well-deserved reputation as a writer of popular biography. Here, he reprises the WWI period with a more challenging subject. John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Force during WWI, is familiar as a stern, remote figure whose insistence on rifle marksmanship in an age of firepower cost American lives; whose insistence on maintaining an independent American army came close to costing the war; and whose ineffectiveness in high command had him on the brink of being relieved when the Armistice was signed. Without modifying those interpretations, Smith uses personal correspondence and the general's uncompleted memoirs to construct a kinder, gentler Pershing. In sometimes overblown prose, Smith describes the cadet at West Point, the lieutenant on a rapidly vanishing frontier and the ROTC instructor at the University of Nebraska. In each situation, Pershing emerges as able to synthesize a masterful performance of duty with an understanding of people, lifting him above the level of a gifted martinet to that of a capable field commander and talented proconsul. But the 1915 death of his wife and three of their four children in a fire left Pershing irrevocably changed. And it is here that Smith's biography falls short, by failing to address the rationales behind Pershing's behavior as head of the American Expeditionary Force, a position in which he demonstrated little of the humanity apparent in his earlier career. Donald Smythe's Pershing: General of the Armies is a more thorough guide to the general's ways and means, but Smith's book offers a worthy introduction to this complex man.

From Booklist
Smith, a prolific popular biographer, produces the best recent compact study of the commander of the American Expeditionary Force of World War I, a figure who deserves to be better known. Missouri-born Pershing (1860^-1948) graduated from West Point in 1886, served against the Indians during the frontier's dying days, and was promoted to brigadier general for his service in the Spanish-American War and the Philippines. In Mexico before and in Europe during World War I, he commanded under the shadow of the loss of his wife and three daughters in a fire. Smith paints Pershing as a much more agreeable individual than his popular image as "Black Jack" would have it, revealing that Pershing possessed much humanity, as well as great appeal for the ladies, beneath his disciplined exterior. Smith is clearly sympathetic to his subject, and his style occasionally turns purple as he puts in a good word indeed, if not the last word, on an undeniably good soldier. Roland Green

Could have been bigger. Could have been better.
By nto62
Until the Last Trumpet Sounds is a fine book. Gene Smith has written an interesting, fast-paced narrative of the life of John J. Pershing. This reader, however, upon finishing the book, was left a bit unfulfilled. At 337 pages, a full 50 of which are devoted exclusively to the lives of Pershing's grandsons, Smith simply cannot do full justice to the highest ranking military officer in US history. Smith merely alights upon a peak of Pershing's career and then sets off for another before the meat of the story is told. What results, nevertheless, is a highly interesting read, but not half of what it could be.
Pershing, born in 1860, rose from obscurity to the General of US Armies garnering an unprecedented sixth star. He went from fighting Indians of the American West on horseback to leading mechanized battles of World War I. Gene Smith's Until the Last Trumpet Sounds has only scratched the surface of a truly remarkable life and, therefore, leaves the reader feeling he could have done quite a bit more. Even so, what he has completed merits a solid 4 stars.

Great story; awful writing
By A Customer
It is incredible that this ever got published. The author cannot write for beans (his prose is a constant irritant) and no editor has ever looked at this thing. The writing gets in the way constantly. If you're interested in the subject, you'll get through the book, but it won't be easy.

Read another book about Pershing!
By A Customer
This is neither a history of the period nor a biography. It is a collection of quotations and anecdotes, that appear to have been taken from the personal papers of John J. Pershing, that are on file at the Library of Congress, not an unbiased source. I got as far as through the period on Pershing's frontier and Philippine service and put it down. It is a shallow treatment that reads like a history for young children. If someone is really interested in the era and the man, read Frank Vandiver's book " Black Jack: The Life and Times of John J. Pershing" in two volumes, published in 1977. A book Smith cites, Donald Smythe's "Guerilla Warrior: The Early Life of John J. Pershing" (1973) is not too bad, nor is "Black Jack Pershing" by Richard O'Connor (1961). None of these are hostile treatments, and all are well written. Pershing was an able and brave Army officer, but so were many others of the era. But Pershing was the only one to go from Captain to Brigadier General despite opposition of the Army command, and this was not solely due to his ability. His smartest move was marrying the daughter of Senator Warren, one of the shrewder political operators of the time, and one who, although a Republican, had equal entree with Wilson as well as Roosevelt and Taft. Warren was Pershing's guardian angel. If you are older than 12, pass this book up and read one of the others.

Grade 5 Up-A two-time winner of the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year award shares her expertise. The book, which offers both instruction and advice, stresses teamwork and encourages girls to have fun playing the game. Exercises range from pregame stretches to off-season conditioning. The many black-and-white action photographs allow readers to see each exercise, drill, or play under discussion. Weatherspoon also includes stories about her family and the sport that she loves. She emphasizes that she has bad days on the court and that every mistake should teach a lesson. Although Faye Y. Miller and Wayne Coffey's Winning Basketball for Girls (Facts On File, 1992) has much of the same information, the personal anecdotes and up-to-date photographs make this title especially appealing. An excellent resource for sports collections.

What a fun book! "Spoon" has always been an inspiration (so what if I don't have her jump shot). The skills she teaches in the book are wonderfully presented but what makes this book special is her inspirational comments about teamwork, success and family. It's great to have a book just for girls, and with the success of the WNBA it's about time! Even if you are not into playing basketball, it makes great reading for someone who just wants to watch and appreciate the game. And this 30+ year old girl loved it! I can't wait to buy copies for my nieces.

This is by far the best basketball instruction book I have seen to this date. Complete with wonderful and touching anectdotes about her life, Teresa Weatherspoon's book could help anyone learn the ways of the game. The book is fun to read, hard to put down, and has become an immediate resource for me when either playing or watching a game. Included you will find helpful workout hints, as well as the specific workout routine of the New York Liberty players. This book will definitely encourage kids to believe in themselves and to go for what they want. Forget the obstacles and believe. Probably the best instructional book on the market today. Thanks for writing it Spoon. ;-)

"A different perspective on the war from those in the thick of battle or those writing on the home front. . . . The author s letters . . . speak of the camaraderie and adventure of it all . . . she paints the everyday details, not the heroics." Dallas Morning News

"A fascinating work of social history, revealing much about British life and American attitudes fifty years ago." Sunday Times (London)

Based on richly detailed and beautifully written letters and journal entries, Rosemary Norwalk tells the unfolding love stories of her and her friends while stationed in England. Deflecting the advances of GIs of every stripe, but caught up in the romantic excitement of the times, they meet and fall in love with their future husbands and make plans for life after the war. Amazon.com Review
This affecting memoir by a Red Cross volunteer eschews sentimental clichés about World War II. Letters to the author's parents in San Francisco, supplemented by entries from a journal in which she recorded material she feared would disturb either them or the censors, relay Rosemary Norwalk's experiences in England during the war's final year and for a few months in Germany after it ended. The Red Cross "girls" served doughnuts and coffee to soldiers disembarking from or boarding ships to the European front, but the mundane nature of their work didn't prevent sharp observers like Rosemary from grasping how this bitter, global conflict was indelibly marking her generation. The author's youthful prose is no more than serviceable in her letters and at times in the journals even self-conscious, but her insights are impressive. Thumbnail portraits of her Red Cross buddies are vivid and perceptive; her political maturity shows in biting remarks about average Germans' willed blindness to the horrors of the Holocaust--and, much more impressive for a young woman on the winning side, in her acknowledgment that many Americans probably would have done the same. Her romance with the army captain she eventually married was similarly grown-up (he had an estranged wife and a young child), and readers will root for their happy ending. --Wendy Smith

From Library Journal
Norwalk provides a vivid account of her service with the American Red Cross in England and on the continent during and immediately after World War II. Her book consists of her World War II journal, a scattering of period documents, and letters home to her family in California. These varied sources describe both her duties and her fascination with Europe's history and people. Readers of Norwalk's generation will enjoy her story of hard work, service, and falling in love with her G.I. husband. Academic readers will profit from the views of this liberated University of California graduate who moved from retail management to nonprofit management yet still was awed by a Buckingham Palace garden party. Norwalk's writing shows an awareness of racial, ethnic, and social prejudices and a can-do attitude in coping with sexual harassment and the possible dangers of wartime romance. From Kirkus Reviews
It wasn't all blood and gutscoffee and doughnuts played a part in the story of WWII, as related in these letters and journal entries from an American Red Cross worker based in England during that war. Norwalk joined the Red Cross in May 1944, only a month before the Allied invasion of Normandy (D-Day). The volunteers were issued helmets, uniforms, and instructions on what to do if they were captured by the enemy. Their day-to-day lives involved fighting shortages of personnel and equipment and the British propensity for stopping everythingincluding troop movementsfor tea. But also, says Norwalk, ``We were expected to be the friend, the girl next door, the kid sister, the funny aunt'' to the US troops en route to France and Germany, even as Nazi bombs destroyed military and civilian targets in England. In less than five months, her Red Cross crew saw two million American soldiers debark from South Hampton, England, to Europe. This book is also a love storyor more precisely, several love stories, as one by one, she and members of her crew fell in love with young servicemen. She chronicles her romance with the blue-eyed major who was such a good dancer; they married and lived happily ever after in Seattle, recently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. After WWII, the Red Cross volunteers with their ubiquitous coffee and doughnuts were often parodied. This story recalls that their cheerful faces, willingness to sing, dance, listen, write letters, and lend a hand with personal problems was invaluable in what was then called the ``war effort.'' No Saving Private Ryan drama and mayhem here, but a low-key story of courage and dedication to duty whose reward was this: ``We were vitally alive, living at full speed, working together for a cause we believed in.'' Another Side of WWII and the Women who Served
By E
Dearest Ones is a wonderfully touching historical account of WWII and of the untold heroines of the war. This is a must read for all WWII historians, it provides a different account of the war and the untold efforts that went into the war effort. The authors details in her letters home carry the spirit and humor of those who served with the Red Cross overseas.
I have had the pleasure of meeting several of the women who served with American Red Cross overseas. They are truly wonderful women, who continue to serve their country, community, and the Red Cross with the compassion and spirit that Rosemary describes in Dearest Ones. Keeping in mind many of these women are grandmothers, and great-grandmothers, they have more energy, happiness, and effervescence than I do at 22- they are truly irreplaceable and inspiring. Read this book to capture their love, inspiring nature, and the sparkle of their unique lives.

Thanks Rosie, loved your book!
By A Customer
Settle in with some coffee and donuts and get ready to enjoy this book. The letters Rosie sent home are fascinating, but her insightful journal entries really make this story outstanding. Her descriptions of her Red Cross co-workers are wonderful; you really feel that you know them. And her adventures in England are also well described: you'll learn how to wangle an invitation to a private tour of a castle, and how to behave when meeting the royal family. But it's more than just light-hearted adventure: Rosie has moving encounters with young GI's and a disturbing encounter with Leavenworth prisoners. And the section of her book dealing with her time in Germany will haunt you. This is a funny, insightful, and moving book.

A book to remember and one grateful reader!
By A Customer
I enjoyed this book so much! I found it by accident while browsing Amazon.com and am so glad I did. I thank Rosemary for taking the time to compile her letters and journal entries after all these years and sharing, in a real way, this time in history with us. I really came to care about her and the other women she worked with during WW II. She managed to bring that time in history to life for me in a personal way. I recommend it highly!
