About the Author
Dr. Suzanne Cassidy is Chief, Division of Human Genetics, Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, and Director of the Residency Training Program in Medical Genetics at the University of California, Irvine.  She is a board certified Medical Geneticist and Pediatrician who has focused on care of individuals with genetic syndromes throughout her 23-year academic career. In particular, her research on the diagnostic criteria, genetic testing, delineation of clinical findings and natural history, and effective management of Prader-Willi syndrome have made her an internationally well-recognized expert on this condition. She has also devoted effort to education of medical geneticists, serving on the American Board of Medical Genetics and the founding Residency Review Committee for Medical Genetics, as well as directing genetics training programs in 4 institutions. She served on the board of directors of the American Society of Human Genetics and as a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of National Center for Human Genome Research at NIH. She has been identified as one of ‘America’s Top Doctors’.

Dr. Judith E. Allanson is Chief, Department of Genetics, and Medical Director, Genetics Patient Service Unit, at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. She also has an appointment as Professor, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Ottawa.  She is a clinical geneticist with interests in syndrome identification and pattern recognition.

Practical Breadth

You know, original thinking in business books is rare, so it is something to celebrate when something new and useful -- even paradigm busting comes around.
Rick Dove is something of an Abraham Lincoln of the Agility movement, having been there from the very beginning. So part of what you'll get here is the maturest ideas that have been put into practice from the small community of original researchers. The Abe metaphor carries into the fact that Rick has chosen to focus his intellect on practical breadth. His approach is rational and understandable: he speaks the language that real managers use, and he uses the type of useful conceptual devices apparent in the clever title.
My own book on Agility ("The Agile Virtual Enterprise") takes a different approach: focusing on a few high payoff, hard problems of interest to advanced implementors. It probably does better as a second book on agility, after one has become convinced. I wish this book had preceded mine in publication -- it did so as far as the legacy of many of the ideas: Rick's ideas were shared early in the game with other, concurrent researchers.
Check it out. It is accessible, with many case studies. And these aren't the headline type of "Chinese food" examples, but the kind that dig in and actually turn the cases inside out. It has tools that you can use now, that are applied in these case studies to show you how and why they work.
All that's rare enough, but the most valuable element here is the original thinking. If you are not exposing yourself to original thinking of this type -- well, you're just not a manager.

Agility a Necessity

Agility a Necessity: I read this book while working in Malaysia and had the time to reflect on the two business worlds I have experienced in the USA and Asian Pacific Rim. The books brings to mind that taking an organization and moving its mentality is like trying to get a huge oil tanker to make a 180 degree turn.... not an easy task. Mr. Dove clearly states in the book the why, the need and the expectations for survival and how to shift ones business view from stagnated status quo to an adaptive and agile environment. The books content is not the type that you just breeze through and whip together a program to initiate change. Instead, you have to take the time to read, step back and understand where you are at and what it will take to define the change. In the book, Mr. Dove gives several examples and templates on how to evaluate and redefine your business environment. I would not recommend this book to those who want to remain in a lazy business environment and hope that the cash flow continues until they retire. This book is for those that are tough enough to step forward, make a difference and do the homework to drive some agility into their business environment. Of course...it does not matter if you are in Asia or the USA...this book is most applicable where ever you are in this world!

A tri-level business pattern

I am both biased and surprised. Biased because I was involved in some
of the experiences on which this book is based and because I reviewed
parts of the manuscript. Surprised because, knowing the focus was on
real world pragmatics by a guy who has pioneered on the factory floor,
I simply did not expect the span of coverage that emerged when all the
chapters were brought together. This book is about how to make
factories more productive. But also it is about how to make
businesses more responsive and more profitable. Further, it is about
how to facilitate proactive learning by all employees. What a concept
- letting everyone help make their enterprise successful. In a few
pages Response Ability shows you more about knowledge management than
most authors can muster in a whole book. Further, Response Ability
shows how all three aspects of a sustainably successful enterprise fit
together, each reinforcing the other, through a framework and module
architectural concept. Of course, the reason all this works so well
is that all is based on principles (clearly explained) and vetted by
results. Results count. And with this book Response Ability is a
result that every alert leader can create.

This outstanding popular military history covers the American Revolution in North and South Carolina. More divided than any other region between patriot and Tory, the Carolinas were the scene of a two-year British campaign (1780^-81) to raise the country for the crown. Lord Cornwallis began well by taking Charleston but subsequently found himself facing an assortment of American generals who could not win but refused to submit. Cornwallis was also hindered as much as helped by the Tories, whose militia efforts were never as successful as those of their patriot counterparts. Eventually, lack of supplies rather than actual defeat drove Cornwallis into Virginia and on the road to Yorktown. Buchanan writes with superlative clarity and considerable wit, providing character sketches better than many novelists', while maintaining balance in judgment and thoroughness in research (the annotated bibliography is valuable to beginning and entrenched students of the Revolution alike). A sweeping yet richly detailed history of the American Revolution in the Carolinas, chronicling the 178081 campaign of British forces to reclaim those two colonies. Buchanan (former archivist at Cornell and the Metropolitan Museum of Art) reminds us that the war for the southern colonies, a struggle ``long, bloody, and obstinate,'' was of crucial importance to the revolution's outcome, yet it has received less attention than some of the northern campaigns. Determined to regain the rich Carolina farmland, the British, under Lord Cornwallis, combined their forces with considerable numbers of local Tories. They eventually captured Charleston and destroyed the American forces at the battle of Camden (largely because of the inept leadership of General Horatio Gates). Tarleton's hated British Legion rode roughshod over the countryside, launching repeated swift, brutal attacks against civilians and militias, burning homes, confiscating livestock, and hanging some who resisted. The violence only rekindled opposition among Carolinians, who flocked to such ingenious guerrilla chiefs as Thomas Sumter, Dan Morgan, and Francis (the ``Swamp Fox'') Marion. Their groups constantly harassed both the crack British regulars and the Tory militia. Buchanan vigorously describes the nature of guerrilla warfare in the South, and traces the series of skirmishes waged by rejuvenated American forces, culminating in the great American victory at Kings Mountain.The battles of Cowpens and Guilford Court House, although technically victories for the British, proved to be the last gasp for the Crown's badly damaged forces. Beats "The Patriot"

I became interested in the Revolutionary War in the Carolinas after viewing the movie, "The Patriot". I found the cruelty by the British, that was portrayed in "The Patriot", hard to believe, so I wanted to learn more about the war in the Carolinas. This book was what I was looking for. It is well documented and the presentation and conclusions of the author make more sense than the movie--the British not as cruel and the Americans are not as innocent. It's a great history and a good read.

Quite good

The book has three facets that highly recommend it. First, the author has a mature intelligent voice that comes through in his writing enabling him to depict events with empathy and depth. Secondly, the work is comprehensive, describing small partisan actions that otherwise get short shrift. Third, I enjoyed his choice of assessing the command skills of the various combatants. His reasoning is sounds and buoyed well by the facts as he, admittedly, presents them. I also found his prose style engaging.

My only criticism is that he gives equal time to minor engagements and major battles. He also describes so many skirmishes that without maps or illustration they tend to dissolve into one another. Furthermore, it would have been nice if he had chosen to chronicle the remainder of the campaign. Of course, my desire for the book to be longer only demonstrates my appreciation of it.

I recommend it.

THE most practical book I have ever read

I didn't buy this book through Amazon, but I loved it so much that I had to review it.
A very practical book that was written with lots of examples by a very experienced person. I found it extreemly useful in setting up my own database consulting business. it contains things such as:
How to price your time, how to choose your client, how to ensure that your client has confidence in you, pitfalls to avoid when building your business etc.

Just like Wonderbread - Bland, stale, and full of sawdust.

As a soon to be full-time consultant, I was hoping that this book would provide me answers for the few remaining questions I have. Based on the other reviews, it appeared this book would fill in those gaps, though now that I have read it, I am sorely disappointed. The most annoying aspect of the book is that the author's primary aim seems to be to show off his grasp of the various fields within computer consulting and especially the terminology and jargon. Seriously, if I REALLY need to know what an ATM switch is, I can look it up in Newton's Telecomm Dictionary. Likewise, I do NOT need a primer on IBM mainframes and PC-DOS which haven't been relevant for over 20 years. I just want to know about "Getting Started" - like the title says. The sidebars are littered with these mostly useless definitions. In addition, the book seems to offer very detailed information in the table of contents, though once you read a specific section you realize the oasis is only a mirage. There's a heading called "Examining Your Strengths" which instructs one to do this without any suggestions on how to do this and how to interpret the results and choose a niche, yet choosing a niche is one of the main points of the book. Much of the information can be useful, yet an equal amount is either so simplistic or so vague I started yelling out loud at the book. Often the author will state things like "research indicates" without even citing the research. A lot of the marketing advice seems regurgitated from bad 1990's marketing books; clearly NOT the authors strong point. If you want to read a mind-blowing 1990's book on marketing a service business, read Harry Beckwith's Selling the Invisible. Finally, the book is very dated, being a computer-related book published in 2000. The annoying little sidebar definitions become more annoying with their staleness. I could hardly keep myself from smiling/groaning at the mention that Y2K consulting is still a growth niche.

A good broad introduction

This book covers all the basics. It is a good "how to" on various levels, but also gives you the advantages and disadvantages of consulting - if you haven't made your mind up yet. But you may want to read other books for more in-depth coverage.
I haven't been contracting for 10 years, but have a stong desire to again do the work I like, for people I like, when I like - and get paid for it. Consulting is different to contracting of course, and Meyer discusses many of the new skills needed, for example setting up, marketing and pricing (he strongly recommends flat rate pricing for example) - and the very important listening skills. After reading the book, I have made my mind up. I am ready to chuck my permanent job.
