Too many stories, too few principles

Based on the reviews, I thought this would be a great book. But the author crafts too many exacting stories and not enough principles. If you're ever in exactly the same situations the author describes, you're OK. Normally, my hiliters work hard when I read books. Not this time. I'd suggest reading Strategic Selling and Spin Selling instead.

A rough diamond, but a diamond nonetheless...

Holden's book _Power Base Selling_ has long been considered a definitive work. With good reason -- it explains some of the Home Truths of the political aspect of the Sell. As a concept, _Power Base Selling_ is incomplete, as it ignores the *value* side of selling: how do you align your customer's perception of Value to your sales efforts? Fortunately, Holden has addressed this gap with his current _ValuBase Selling_ courses. Viewed purely as a political selling tool, though, _Power Base Selling_ is superb. The problem is, Holden uses a rather annoying, light-weight writing style which tends to lessen the impact of his very important message. Couple that with an attempt to somehow hook in with concepts from Sun Tsu's classic _The Art of War_, and introduce the concept of the "Ivy League Streetfighter", and you end up with a sometimes confusing set of images permeating the book. For this reason, the book is a rough diamond -- it would benefit from a re-write. However, it is the best book of its kind.

An outstanding book about the evolution of risk.

Against the Gods is an outstanding book about the evolution of risk and man's attempt to understand it. Bernstein begins with ancient times and traces the history of numbers and probability leading eventually to today's seemingly complex financial world of portfolio theory, derivatives, and risk management techniques. Readers will learn about revolutionary thinkers including John von Neumann (inventor of game theory), Isaac Newton, Harry Markowitz (grandfather of portfolio theory), and the late Fischer Black (Black Scholes option formula) among others. Readers will also find enlightening stories about game theory, fibonacci numbers, chaos theory, the bell curve, regression to the mean, and more. Yet despite all the intelligence, computer power, and sophisticated techniques, Bernstein presents us with the growing body of evidence discovered by researchers including the late Amos Tversky and others that "reveals repeated patterns of irrationality, inconsistency, and incompetence in the ways human beings arrive at decisions and choices when faced with uncertainty." Against the Gods was chosen as one of Business Week's top 10 books of the year for 1996.

Bernstein has written a thorough book that traces the linear progression of man's understanding of probability and risk.
This is a journey that begins with the importatioin of the arabic numbering system to the West and ends with super-computer crunched chaos theory. In between lie the fathers (all men) of mathamatical understanding. These individuals are the story of AGAINST THE GODS. Bernstein survey's the intellectual contrubutions of each as man strives to understood basic probability, the law of large numbers, bell curves, regression analysis, uncertainty theory and everything else you dimly remember from college statistics classes. He spends the latter quarter of the book on risk and probability theory in the financial world, where theorists have developed portfolio analysis, volitility studies, hedging and sidebets and other quantatative market plays.
Credit to the author for balancing his story against the very high probability that much of what these thinkers sought may be unattainable. He frequently mentions the humanity that these people try to explain with laws formulated from observations in the natural world. Although rightly impressed with his intellectual frontiersmen, Bernstein has no problem recognizing that the uncertainty that has always eluded explanation is us and that it helps make life worth living and progress possible.
This book is interesting for what it is. A story of the development of theories. I would have enjoyed more of a focus on the applications of this intellectual progression that led to the development of insurance and financial markets. Though these elements are mentioned often, they provide the backdrop for Bernsteins survey of theory. I suspect another book awaits someone who will reverse the order and use theory as a backdrop for the mechanisms that have allowed the modern economy to flourish and develop. The story of insurance, speculation, the beginning of capital markets, a monied economy and the like spring from the intellectual movements so well chronicled by Bernstein. However, they are not the focus, which has the habit of making the reading dry and sometimes uninteresting to those not captivated by the actual numeric analyses and proofs which are amply offerred over the course of the book.
If you like intellectual history and are looking to tie the building blocks of probability and risk analysis together over the last four centuries than this book may well captivate you. If you are seeking an understanding of how these discoveries were applied to forge the modern economy we now take for granted you will find parts interesting but may well feel that the story is incomplete.

History of risk analysis, not of risk

The book is a reasonably interesting history of the mathematical analysis of risk. Bernstein discusses the development of probability and statistical analysis, and even some of the more modern concepts behind portfolio theory. However, I was disappointed overall. The cover and title misled me---I was hoping for a history of how the understanding of risk and the development of analytical tools led to the development of insurance markets, etc., and fundamentally changed how businesses operated in the face of uncertainty. When a shipper could insure his cargo, instead of just waiting for bad news, how did that change the world? I want to know! Instead, I got to read about who discovered the bell curve. I'm trained in a mathematical field, so I felt the discussion got a bit tedious.
I felt, overall, that the discussion was aimed more at explaining the math in layman's terms rather than exploring the impact of these developments on how people do business and make decisions.

Keys (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1999), offers advice from professionals who've seen action in the ABM trenches and lived to tell the tale.

Guide to new LRFD bridge design for beginner and sceptics.

This book offers the bridge engineer a complete guide to the new LRFD specs in metric units. It is a great tool for both the new engineer, or the skeptical veteran, leery of LRFD. It offers a brief US bridge history in its introduction, and discusses aesthetics in the beginning: where it belongs. Next the development of LRFD and its advantages over ASD is discussed and should be read (and reread) carefully by the skeptics (excellent chapter). Influence lines follow, then system design, and finally concrete and steel bridge design and examples. This book is well suited to supplement the ASSHTO code or stand alone. Also, it is truly metric, no soft conversion at all. The book is quite long, however; it does command your undivided attention if it to be learned from. I highly recommend this book.

Buy This Book For LRFD Bridge Design

I am a bridge designer with three years of design experience. I purchased this textbook for Dr. Barker's (author's) bridge design graduate course in college. This textbook, unlike so many others on the subject of bridge design, delves into the real nuts-and-bolts calculations of structural engineering. The most in-depth sections are loads, analysis, steel bridges, and concrete bridges. The two examples in the steel and concrete sections are thorough treatments. No subject is simply glossed over in this book. This entire text seems to have been written with the goal of answering common questions from both designers and students. From why various code requirements came to be, to exactly the meaning of obscure variables, most everything in the 1st to 2nd Ed. of the LRFD code was addressed. My only complaint about the text is that there are several mistakes in the calculations (particularly in the lengthly examples). However, most of these appear to have been corrected in subsequent printings.

This book is a great desk reference for bridge designers. I cannot specifically recommend it as a study guide for the PE/SE, since those exams do not use the AASHTO LRFD specifications yet. However, for designing by the AASHTO LRFD, this book can be considered the commentary that space did not allow.

As a side note, the hardback book is a nicely bound edition. The sketches, tables, and diagrams are all clear, as well as the notations used (superscripts, subscripts, Greek, etc.).

Almost a Necessity

As a Bridge Engineer trying to figure out the new LRFD Code, I found this book to be a necessity. It is comprehensive in applying the code to actual designs. The design examples are thorough, and the logic can be followed. In all, I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn all the provisions of the new LRFD Code.

Edward Grant is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is the author and editor of twelve books, including God and Reason in the Middle Ages (Cambridge, 2001), and The Foundations of Modern Science in the Middle Ages: Their Religious, Institutional and Intellectual Contexts (Cambridge, 1996). He is also the author of approximately ninety articles on the history of science and natural philosophy. He was Vice-President and President of the History of Science Society and was awarded the prestigious George Sarton Medal of that society.

Arbitrariness of medieval science

The medieval scholars got nowhere in mechanics because they considered the essence of science to be speculative and philosophical discussions of non-tangible things like vacuum, pure elemental bodies, metaphysical-causal explanations, etc. (chapter 4). It is easy to concoct many theories that can account for the broad qualitative aspects of motion but which have very different implications for these types of questions. Since the issues are intangible, people will quibble forever without getting anywhere. Later science shifted focus to more concrete, qualitative problems, not because they are more interesting (they are not) but because there are definite answers, which prevents arbitrary theories and empty speculation. Things like the the "mean speed theorem" foreshadowed such an approach, but in isolation it does nothing, despite many historians' excitement over this trivial result ("probably the most outstanding single medieval contribution to the history of physics", derived by "admirable and ingenious" reasoning, p. 56).

It was the same in cosmology, which was dominated by speculative questions such as how god's omnipresence related to the finiteness or infinitude of the universe (chapter 5). Again, one can find precursors of proper science in Buridan's and Oresme's discussions of the earth's rotation. Contemporary fashion requires that Buridan and Oresme be called "brilliant" and "even more brilliant" respectively (p. 66), when they were in fact perpetuating anti-science by maintaining that the question of the earth's rotation "is scientifically indeterminate" (p. 68), and should be decided on the basis of the bible, the "Aristotelian principle that rest is a nobler state than motion" (p. 65), or whatnot. As above, then, they turn away from science towards arbitrary speculation (though admittedly while claiming that they do the opposite).

Thus, while "the major figures in medieval science found much to criticise in Aristotle, not only on theological, but also on straightforward scientific grounds", "until the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, however, such departures failed to produce genuine efforts to reconstruct, or replace, the Aristotelian world picture. The explanation for this is not easy to find." (p. 83). One explanation is that Galileo's "success stemmed in part from a recognition of the need to disengage what was properly mathematizable from the large and diffuse context of qualitative variation" (p. 84). I would add only that there is no evidence that Galileo "disentangled" anything from the supposedly "brilliant" medieval science; rather it probably didn't take him more than an afternoon to reproduce what little scraps of insight they had reached. Besides separating concrete mathematics from qualitative nonsense, a second key factor was the belief in one truth, as opposed to this plurality crap that we saw the "brilliant" Buridan and Oresme support. "For medieval speculative cosmologists it was by no means necessary that astronomical hypotheses reflect cosmological truth. Indeed, any number of different hypotheses could theoretically save physical appearances. It was even widely held that a false hypothesis might be more probably than some true ones. Copernicus, however, brought a wholly different outlook ... For Copernicus, to 'save the phenomena' in astronomy meant to frame true hypotheses." (pp. 87-88).

The best book in the market about chemical process synthesis

Covering the main topics in chemical process synthesis an design, this book present a broad view of the state of the art techniques and methods to achieve an optimum design.
With this work, Dr. Seider, et al, have given an invaluable contribution to the teaching of this field, presenting a logical an principle based approach for the "basic plant design", in contrast to the experience based traditional view.
Focusing on the extensive use of commercial process simulators, the book presents an overview of the conceptual basis of process simulation and optimization,but not its mathematical detail, giving the engineer the opportunity to focus on the process instead of focus on the mathematical and computational problem.

This book is really good for process engineers. I don't know if there is a different edition of the one I have but there's little about CHEMCAD, the book is too focused on other simulation softwares and if you don't have one of those; solving some proposed problems gets really difficult and frustating. Packed with heuriustics on process and equipment design.Excellent choice!

Only good if you want to do simulations

As for using this book for design - I would say that it is marginal at best. If you happen to use Aspen and do everything using a process simulator, this book is pretty good. From and economics/costing standpoint, this book doesn't even come close to Peters & Timmerhaus. Does not have much of a discussion on material selection - a definite drawback. It does include a nice appendix on design heuristics that draws from Walas and other sources.
