I find this book to have a thorough treatment of a variety of differential equation solving methods necessary in engineering. It has many examples and problems and is laid out quite conveniently. I wish I had known about this book sooner.

How about throwing in a student's companion text that contains "chapter extensions?"? What about getting the right Solutions manual? only 30% of the solutions are in it? And now I just found out they have published (another?) new 7th edition which no doubt will have a brand new array of essential supplements and extensions. Why all these editions and supplements?

This is the Best Physics Book Ever!

Well I should say that I am not well versed in the world of physics texts but I did thoroughly enjoy Halliday. I had never taken physics before but this book was very clear, simple, and to the point. I really liked the "key ideas" approach to solving the problems. I also liked that there were lots of worked out problems in the chapters and some of the problems are really funny. I suppose its quite a challenge to come up with "fun and exciting" physics problems but Halliday goes beyond the mass on a spring type problems. For example there were problems about banana splits and tarzan. Now how does that relate to physics you might ask? Well you should just read the book to find out!There is not too much calculus in it, but the calc used is pretty simple. I should also point out that this book has been around for ages because my dad used it back in engineering school as did some of my professors in uni! I guess its just a classic.

A wonderful compendium...

Everyone in the field of child and developmental psychology has praised this book, which is to child psychology as the Standard Edition is to psychoanalysis. I had a copy of the third edition from my graduate training; this 1999 5th edition advances that earlier work. Every graduate student dealing with children and adolescents should have this reference volume.
I loved the chapters by Carolyn Saarni ("Emotional Development: Action, communication and understanding), whose other works I have read; by Susan Harter ("The development of self-representations"); and by Elliot Turiel ("The development of morality.") They are excellent examples of research, theory, and good writing, all at the same time.
This recommendation may sound silly, but I'll say it anyway: This is the best compendium of theory and research on the social, emotional, and personality development of children and adolescents. If you are a graduate student, this is a necessary volume. You will be asked questions from this on your comprehensive exams.
Good luck!
PS The production qualities from John Wiley are excellent, also. This book will hold up.

This book is intended to give an overview in simple and visual terms, serve as a guide and introduction to this rather complex manufacturing field. Designer must have a good understanding of all manufacturing processes abailable, in order to have confidence that the proposed manufacturing processes is the most economical and appropriate. So, the book tried to give an overview of all materials and manufacturing methods, in order to help students to visualize and develop forms that ultimately will be manufactured.
The contests consist of metal materials, metal forming, metal cutting, metal joining, appearance finishing and coating, plastic materials, resin forming processes, machining parts, joining plastics, finishing plastics, rubbers and elastomers, natural engineering materials, composites, and rapid prototyping.

Good as a quick reference

I disagree with the reviewer from TX. The book is written using terminology that any industrial designer should be familiar with. It would make a good textbook for design students because it gives an overview of many materials & processes. It also has charts and diagrams that make the information easy to digest. My criticisms would be that it could use more examples of final products and detailed descriptions of the materials & processes used, ie case studies. For the price, it is a thin book and could easily include a case study section. I would also like more elaboration in the "charateristics, uses and properties" sections for each material with common pitfalls to avoid.

Conceptual Case Histories of How to Learn from Scenarios

If you talk to someone about using scenarios to think about the future, chances are that the other person will nod her/his head in agreement with whatever you have to say. That surface agreement, however, will be misleading because the other person is probably thinking about a totally different kind of scenario thinking than you are.
Learning from the Future helps overcome that misunderstanding by explaining a large number of ways that scenarios can be used. The book contains 25 chapters which each look at a different aspect of scenario development and subsequent thinking.
Three chapters look at what scenario learning is. Seven chapters explore basic approaches to constructing scenarios. Eight chapters describe how to apply scenarios in different contexts, like competitor evaluations, technology investing, making public policy decisions, and considering customers. The final section looks at how to create the right organizational environment for making and using scenarios for learning.
You will benefit from reading the thoughts of many of the world's top experts and users of scenario learning including Peter Schwartz, Kees van der Keijden, Ian Wilson, Liam Fahey and Robert Randall. It is a great line-up, and what they have to say is good food for thought.
If you would like a good introduction to scenario learning, this is an excellent place to start because the perspectives that are captured are unusually broad and appropriate.

one of the very best works on scenario learning

This book, written in 1997, is one of the very best works on scenario planning-or scenario learning, as the editors prefer. The 446-page book is a collection of 25 chapters by a variety of authors, each adding a perspective to the scenario learning process. Fahey and Randall explain how scenario learning builds on traditional scenario planning, then follow up with a chapter on integrating scenarios with strategy. Several essays explain basic approaches to constructing scenarios. The next section shows how to apply scenario learning in diverse contexts including industry scenarios, competitive positioning, technology investments, and anticipating new consumer products. The last section details the vital step of managing the organizational context for scenario learning. Included in this section is a contribution by Kees van der Heijden on the business idea, and Paul Schoemaker on common pitfalls in scenario planning. This book is an excellent resource on the practical use of scenarios in business strategy. It mostly avoids overcomplicating the process as some other books have done, and it focuses on practical strategic implementation, not scenarios for their own sake. At a time when the New Economy continually throws up surprises, looking ahead with scenario learning is more timely than ever.

Forewarned is forearmed

Many, if not most, corporations try to utilize scenario planning in their strategy process. All too frequently, these efforts become routine: what if we increase (decrease) marketing budgets by 10%? What if raw material prices go up (down)? It's all pretty warm beer given the pace of business change every company faces.
This book shows how to do it right. The editors have shaped the contributions of 24 experts iinto a thorough, rigorous book covering all the vital aspects of scenarios. The reader will find clear discussions of what scenarios should be and how organizations can use them to "learn from the future." There are chapters on tools and techniques (like simulation models), advice on implementation, and case studies from both the private and public sector. The last chapter, "Twenty Common Pitfalls in Scenario Planning" is especially valuable.
Forewarned is forearmed. Any manager who does not want to go into the future blind and defenseless must read this book.
