A nice practical guide for the non-specialist

This book is targeted at working chemists (not theorists) and engineers, who want to use computational chemistry to address real-world research problems. It does a good job of providing a general overview of a wide number of techniques with an emphasis on practical considerations, such as the appropriateness and accuracy of the various techniques for a given type of problem, and the potential pitfalls that must be avoided. It does a great job of explaining the jargon and technical nomenclature, which would otherwise stump new-comers to the field, including short descriptions of the various levels of theory (Semi-empirical Methods, HF, DFT Methods, Perturbation theory, CI, CC, etc...), Basis Sets (STO-3G, 6-31G, CBS, LANL2DZ, etc...), calculation types (geometry optimization, frequency calculations, population analysis), and so on. In addition it has a very useful appendix containing short reviews of about 30 different software packages used in the field.

While the book is a useful practical guide, the potential buyer should recognize that it is not intended to be a textbook on Quantum Chemistry. It provides a general overview of the various theories, indicating some of the major assumptions, but does not delve into any details of how the theories actually work or are implemented. It contains very little math and doesn't even attempt to explain how to solve the few equations it does have (the obvious assumption being that the computer will solve them). All of this is fine for the stated goal of the book, but the reader should realize that if he really wants to learn Quantum Chemistry, rather than just run a software program that uses it, he should at least find another book to read in conjunction with this one.

On the practical side, this book does a good job of pointing out the weaknesses and strengths of the many computational chemistry techniques. It also provides instructions for setting up calculations and, more importantly, recommendations for what to do when the calculations fail. On the downside, because the book covers such a wide range of topics and does not focus on a single software package or type of calculation, the advice or recommendations are sometimes too general to be of much use. Nevertheless, armed with this book, one of the many available computational chemistry software packages, and its corresponding user's manual any competent chemist or chemical engineer should quickly be able to start running useful calculations.

Unusable list of topics without explanation

I had high hopes when I ordered the book. The table of contents is impressive and appears to cover almost the entire spectrum of computational chemistry. Even topics that aren't treated in other textbooks at all or only in a small paragraph have an entire chapter devoted to them in Young's book.
Unfortunately, the table of contents can only be described as a deliberate attempt to deceive the reader. Most (sub-) chapters of the book are only a few lines long and do nothing than stating the problem without further explanation or elaboration. At the end of each section Young has collected a list of references that readers might find useful. Quite tellingly, Young also references other textbooks of Computational Chemistry that explain the issues much better than this author does!
I don't think this book (in its current form) should have been published at all. A second edition, with proper treatment of all topics that the TOC promises and the body of the work doesn't deliver is certainly called for. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen as it would expand the page count of the book at least threefold.

nice applications with heavy computations

Wasn't there once a time, in the depths of the Cold War, when Synthetic Aperture Radar was highly classified? It is still jarring to me to see a book like this, telling all and sundry about the many applications to which it can be directed.

Soumekh takes us through the basic theory. Intensive numerical analysis. Which is why Matlab has been drafted by him to aid us. A nice aid to following the concepts and seeing examples that are non-trivial. The hardest sections of each chapter are on the reconstruction of the data. That is, in the finding of possible sources that gave rise to the observed signals.

You would do well before reading this book to be fully conversant about [Fast] Fourier Transforms and scattering of radiation from objects. Put it this way, if Point Spread Function doesn't mean anything to you, then the book might be of limited use in your situation.

He discusses important geometries, like stripmap and the circular SAR. But just as importantly, there is good mention of applications like aerial reconnaissance or surveying.

Good book but poor presentation of the algorithms

I'm writing this review soon after having received the book so I haven't had the time to go and study everything yet. But I went quite extensively through the first two chapters (equation by equation), which is the basis for this review:
_ The book: quite good and clear. All the equations are easy to follow even if I they are a bit scattered, or at least they seem to be: I wish they were numbered and referenced in the text. Instead, the reader has to find pages back and forth to connect the text with the equations. Mind you, doing this is a good exercise to eventually remember them.
_ The algorithms: this is the weak point in my opinion. The title does say "with MATLAB Algorithms" and it is true, some MATLAB scripts are provided. But they are not properly referenced in the text and the scripts themselves are very raw. As part of a book, I would have expected a clear connection between the equations/sections and the algorithms, with clear comments and more details. Here, it is about one script per chapter and up to the reader to make the connections. Again, good as a homework I guess ("find which part of the script corresponds to which part of the chapter") but a bit frustrating when time is short.

One of the best texts on SAR signal processing

SAR imaging owes a lot to inverse scattering theory, coherence theory, Fourier optics and holography. Luckily, Soumekh comes from an optics background and therefore, is very comfortable with all the optics stuff. He has done an excellent job in presenting different modalities of SAR imaging like stripmap and spotlight and implementing the algorithms in matlab. There is a lot of depth in his book and every time I read it I understand something that I could not understand when I read it last time. I have become a fan of Soumekh. I also attended one of his tutorials based on this book in the SPIE symposium in Orlando Florida.

Dr. Morgan is also Professor-in-Residence in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department at UC Berkeley. Dr. Morgan is an IEEE Fellow.

Dan Ellis is Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department of Columbia University. Dr. Ellis's Laboratory for Recognition and Organization of Speech and Audio (LabROSA) investigates how to extract high-level information from audio, including speech recognition, music description, and environmental sound processing.

Speech and Audio Signal Processing: Processing and Perceptio

This is a book much needed in the speech and audio community because of its unique perspective on these topics. By their very nature, speech, music and other audio signals are only fully understood if one takes into account their perception, production, and the context within whcih they exist (language, symphony). To appreciate what to process about such signals, the scientist must have a broad appreciation of linguistics, hearing, vocal tract models, and the brain in general, in addition to the standard engineering tools and approaches. This is why this book is valuable. It indeed attempts to reach out to all these fields with just enough details to inspire the reader, and to provide links to existing more detailed literature. The book is well written, full of excellent illustrations, and it was the perfect choice for a class to graduate students in the Electrical Engineering Department where I teach at the University of Maryland. I highly recommend it.

Hitch Hiker's Guide to Speech & Audio Processing :-)

OK, maybe the title of my review's a little misleading, in the sense that this book doesn't match the inimitable Douglas Adam's masterpiece in humour.I meant it in a more literal sense, that is,this book is an excellent guide to the field of Speech & Audio Processing, with a 'holistic' approach to the subject that is refreshing indeed.It can be approached by newcomers with little difficulty - it isn't 'overly mathematical', though all the essential maths is definitely there.The experts, too, shall find new insights from two leading experts in the field.
What i like best about the book is that the chapters are short - average chapter size is only about 15 pages.Thus material is presented in 'bite-sized' chunks, making it much easier to digest.Also, since the authors opt to focus on breadth more than on depth, the book isn't imposingly thick.The layout is also very nice,making it even more of a pleasure to read.
The clarity of writing is another strong point of the book, as are the illustrations.The authors go to the heart of the matter, successfully imparting the flavour of the topic, be it the basics, or the current state-of-the-art.An excellent chapterwise bibliography makes it easy to trace further details on any topic.
All in all, it's a great book, one which stands out for the originality of its approach and the expertise of its authors. In my opinion, anyone working in the area of Speech/Audio processing should have a copy of this most accessible guide.

Much breadth but little depth

There are many good books on speech processing, but not too many also cover music processing. In that sense, this book is good. However, the major shortcoming of this book is that in its attempt to cover many topics, it doesn't really cover any topics in great detail. The material in this book is merely a good introduction, but one is forced to go to the cited references to find more detail on specific subjects. My overall feeling on this book is rather neutral. If you are just interested in speech processing, there are other books out there which have better coverage. But I am still look for a good book that covers the signal processing of music.

highly regarded text on topics important in both engineering and agriculture and many other areas of scientific research

Doug Montgomery got excellent statistical training at VPI. He also has a wealth of practical experience from his consulting work. His books on regression, statistical design and response surfaces are all well written and understandable to engineers. This 4th edition published in 1997 still contains all the useful information on factorial and fractional factorial designs. Chapter 14 is a wonderful up-to-date chapter that covers important process optimization topics not often covered in traditional design of experiments books. This includes response surface methods, mixture experiments, evolutionary operation and Taguchi methods. It does not require high level mathematics.

Russell L. Parr, CFA, ASA, is President of Intellectual Property Research Associates and internationally known for his expertise in intellectual property royalty rates. He holds a Master’s in Business Administration and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University. Mr. Parr is responsible for completion of complex consulting assignments involving the valuation and pricing of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and other intangible assets. I paid Amazon about $250.00 for this book six months ago and it is worth every penny. I am not a CPA so I can only read 30 - 40 pages at a time and then my head starts swimming.
However, I am a senior manager at a company whose value is almost 100% dependant on our intellectual property and intangible assets and this book has been my guide in setting policy. I take it with me on every plane flight (about every two weeks) and re-read a section.

"kind of like the opposite of an aerial view"

I have attempted to learn from this book in a first-level university Russian course. (I am a middle-aged retired teacher, and already have some background in 4 languages, with reasonable success in all of them.) I'm sure that there's some sort of pedagogical theory which justifies the book's structure, but I find it a constant barrier to my learning. Each chapter is structured in the same way. Each starts with a Russian-only treatment of the materials to be covered in the chapter. Of course, virtually all the material is new to the reader at that point. The Russian section has pointers, therefore, into the following grammatical section, which is in English, and is at the end of the chapter. Unfortunately, the presented material is not well linearized, so after having stopped in mid-stream to read those grammar sections, and having flipped back and forth for a while, one still hasn't encountered all of the vocabulary and concepts in the current section. A chapter makes sense only when one has completed it, meaning that the process of learning is constantly frustrating, and lacking in the pleasures and rewards of mastery along the way. I don't find it any better to use as a review aid when test time comes along. If your prof has selected the text, you're stuck with it; I'd suggest finding some supporting ancillary materials, and using them from day one. I have the luxury of dropping the class. I've found a "Russian as a Second Language" series published in Russia for English speakers, and will hire a native-speaker college student to help me work my way through it. (The title is from a Steely Dan song, by the way. I'm a big believer in aerial views in first-level courses.)

Very helpful.

I ordered this to accompany the Pimsleur Language Russian program, as Pimsleur, although very powerful for learning to speak, has little more than a pamphlet to teach you to read. So, I picked this up, and it is very handy. It has made the process of learning to read fairly easay and enjoyable.

I would have rated this a 3, however, because you lose a LOT of the meat of the book if you don't have the audio recordings, which aren't included in the book. At least, they weren't with mine. However, I poked around online and found that they're available for download off this website:

I don't know how long that site will be up, but if you intend to use this book to teach yourself to read and speak, those MP3s will be invaluable.

AWFUL - don't waste your money!

Troika is a complete disaster. NOWHERE will you find complete declensions of nouns, ie, all 6 cases. Table at book's back can fool you, because it cannot display exceptions, eg pisatel and ychitel are not the same endings. This is fatal, as individual chapters attempt to teach one case at a time, so one rarely practices constructing a useful sentence. Rebecca Domar's Basic Russian, pubd 1960 has it all, declensions of nouns & adjectives. Troika is designed to prolong the required coursework of students to become fluent. So dumbed down!
Schaums's outline has more for $15, and Dover's Essential Russian at $6.

you NEED this book!

I bought "Math Trek 2" sight unseen because we'd read "Math Trek 1" from our local public library, but the library didn't have the second book in the series. While you probably should read "Math Trek 1" first, "Math Trek 2" is even better! I generally expect a sequel to be *almost* as good, so this was a surprise.
I read "Math Trek 2" aloud, as bedtime reading, to my nine-year-old, who enjoyed it very much, and even proved how closely he'd been paying attention by surprising his teacher with a novel, different answer to a series question she'd posed the class, and then explaining his answer so the whole class could understand it.
As an adult, I very much enjoyed such tidbits as *why* the five Platonic solids are called that, and what they meant to Plato. Reading these books is as much fun for me as it is for my child.
The book is marked "Young Adult", but should be entertaining and informative to a wide range of ages. My nine-year-old would not have read it on his own if I had just left it around, though; younger kids probably need an adult's involvement.
