Peter Krass has edited the Wisdom Series series which includes this volume. Each anthologizes brief essays by various executives who are most highly regarded as leaders, managers, entrepreneurs, etc. Following an insightful Introduction, Krass provides a brief bio of each author which precedes her or his essay. Here we have "classic writings by legendary entrepreneurs" whose essays are organized by Krass as follows:
Part I: The Start-Up [eg Michael Bloomberg, Kim Polese, and Doris Drucker]
Part II: The Maverick Element and Other Qualities [eg Warren Avis, Andrew Carnegie, and Mark McCormack]
Part III: Venture Capital, LBOs, and Going Public [eg Tom Monaghan, Conrad Hilton, and Henry R. Kravis]
Part IV: Risk and Strategy [eg Richard Branson, Dave Thomas, and Steve Case]

These are student theses....

I was disappointed by this book for several reasons. First, it is not well-organized in terms of content. Second, the references are mostly to student theses which are difficult to obtain for more information. In fact, the author has apparently not really written this book, she has merely strung together many other's works to make a long, tedious book. The problem is the works referred to are not from advanced professionals, but students or those just out of school. This makes for weak content and mostly repetition of basic material throughout.
The price was too much for what I thought I would get in terms of new info, so I ended up returning this book. I do like the author's book on psychotherapy; it is from 20 years ago, but has a lot of practical material on art therapy and as a counselor, I found it really helpful. Too bad this one was not up to the previous sophistication.

disappointing content

This author is an excellent writer, but unfortunately this latest book does not live up to previous volumes. The content was extremely disappointing and read like a series of student papers strung together to make a book. The text could have benefited from editing, it is laborious to read and certainly is not for those new to this field, they will find it confusing and dense. The topics are innovative, there is no argument about that and the illustrations are interesting. As a psychotherapist I was left wanting something more clear, to the point, and less laden with lengthy cases. Art Psychotherapy by this author still remains her best and classic text, I would recommend that readers interested in this field purchase that one and skip this one.

The process of evaluating the use of evaluating the use of land for institutional and residential development is clearly and comprehensively outlined in a very logical and systematic manner; relating, through a "program", the critical needs of a potential developer to the realities of the site.
The publication begins with a detailed description of the programming and site selection approaches which then leads to a description of the attributes that need to be considered for investigation within the site analysis.
The development of a "program" for site planning projects which includes architecture is both essential and uncommon. Although many of the examples are of relatively large-scale urban sites, the approach is applicable for all sizes of development. (Professor Laurence E. This work differs from existing texts that have addressed the same audiences in that it acquaints the reader with a more complete overview of the broader range of site design issues in a simplified "academic" style, but it does not attempt a more detailed "how to do it" approach for each topic. As a first year Landscape Architecture student, this book was very helpful for clearly laying out the site analysis concepts. You can't beat the graphics as well.

Apparently, there is a new edition coming out, which might have been nice to wait for, but I needed it for a class. overall, a very good book.

Great introductory text

My Ph.D. research involves surface and interface science, so I read a lot of texts in this topic area. This book is one of the best introductory texts I have seen to surface and interface science. It is geared towards the undergraduate student in science and engineering who has little knowledge of quantum, solid state, or thermodynamics. The text flows cleanly with lots of simple pictures and diagrams to illustrate ideas. Important equations are included, but the amount of math is kept to a minimum. All the key ideas in surface science are mentioned, such as adhesion, tribology, wetting, oxidation, catalysis, etc. There is adequate mention of applications, technologies, and how they are related together. The book is organized such that each chapter covers a specific topic, and they can be read independently of each other, making it a great reference. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about surface or interface science.

A thorough general introduction

Surfaces, Interfaces, and Colloids: Principles and Applications, 2nd Edition, by Drew Myers, Wiley-VCH

I have used this book for a course I teach at a technical university on surface and colloid science. The students are typically seniors or beginning graduate students in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science. For this group of students, I would like a book which covers the wide scope of this field at an intermediate level, giving the basic theory but with a wealth of applications to demonstrate the utility of this subject in the real world. The book by Myers does not quite satisfy those criteria, but it comes close. Few other books cover such a wide range of topics, from the basic stuff such as chapters on the origin of surface tension to detailed treatments of applications in emulsions, aerosols, friction, and adhesion. I can think of a few other books with such a breadth of treatment - Hunter's "Foundations of Colloid Science" or Adamson and Gast's "Physical Chemistry of Surfaces", but these are somewhat encyclopedic in nature and hard for first time readers to really benefit from. The detail of the treatment is somewhat light on the mathematical side, as compared perhaps to Hiemenz and Rajagopalan`s text. But the latter book has been judged too mathematically challenging by the students of my classes - a view I don't really share. What I like best about Meyer's book is the effectiveness, at least in my view, with which it gets all of the important ideas across. Though short on equations, the author uses careful explanations and helpful diagrams to cover the area in a very detailed way. Many topics explained, such as the dynamics of wetting and competitive wetting, are not even mentioned in higher level textbooks. And the explanations are complete, not abbreviated or simplified, and with may practical examples illustrating the concepts. The one complaint I hear the most from students is that the text doesn't give much help with solving the homework problems which the author has placed at the ends of each chapter. To be fair, this complaint really only applies to the more difficult of the problems, which account for roughly half of them. But the students are correct in that these problems sometimes do not provided needed data (it is often not even in the book) and often call for a level of analysis which is above the level of the relevant chapter. A few worked examples, especially in Chapters 4-10 where the basic material is presented, would have been very helpful. While this shortcoming may be a detriment towards self-study, I feel that the breadth of coverage and effectiveness of the explanations makes this a good book to have on your shelf for the next time you need to brush up on your colloid and surface science.

I used this book as a supplement to my main text for a graduate level course in colloids and surface physical chemistry. It was by far one of the best texts to use for this area. It makes things easier to understand without all the math in some other texts. Excellent.

Only Book Of Its Kind

I'm thrilled that I finally have a book that tells how to digitally as well as manually color architectural and landscape drawings. It gives tips on using a scanner to get drawings or photographs into a layer of Photoshop and then how to manipulate the layers including opacity and filters. The technics for using markers and colored pencils to achieve realistic wood, rocks,leaves, water, and chrome are outstanding. Includes great tips on paper colors, and what to include or leave out of a drawing to give it visual punch. The entire 414 pages are drawings and tips specifically dedicated to the needs of architects, landscape architects, and interior designers though any graphic person would find tremendous value in this book.

Look and Learn!

Maybe the title to this high quality book should start "The idiot's guide to..." or "The Dummy's guide..." I hadn't really drawn since I was at school and when I started studying interior design and realized I had to be able to realistically draw/paint lighting effects and shadows etc etc I went into a state of shock! Thank goodness I bought this book. It isn't filled with masses of boring text that is trying to teach you a visual subject. It's right there in front of you, page after page of colourful, step by step drawings. Be warned that marker pens are the favoured medium in this book. So if you are looking for a book about water colouring or gouache, you won't find it here. On the other hand, it is an excellent guide, I think, to how affects are achieved, whatever medium you prefer, and the book makes it all so simple.

Help! I can't get markers!

This book is absolutely fabulous. The only problem is,
I don't live in the U.S. and I cannot get professional
design markers, so I can only use professional colored
pencils or watercolor. Can someone suggest a book for that?

Grade 5-9-This is not your typical math puzzle book. Instead of calculator puzzles or multiplication tricks, it is filled with sections on knots and unknots, maps, M?bius roller coasters, secret binary codes, billiards, chaos theory, and more. The layout is clear and precise, though some of the explanations are a bit complicated. Most of the black-and-white cartoons and diagrams complement the text nicely, although some of the drawings are a little rough. Each chapter visits a different site at an amusement park called the MathZone. For each trek, readers are asked to solve problems and try out puzzles on their own. Solutions are provided at the end. This is a fun book that goes beyond sharpening skills, allowing readers to apply mathematics to everyday life. Although it covers similar ground, it would work well with Christy Maganzini's Cool Math (Price Stern Sloan, 1997). While Math Trek is perfect for youngsters who want to experiment and learn more on their own, teachers may want to use some of the activities to supplement their curriculum.

Our family has really enjoyed this book. We homeschool our two children, ages 10 and 13, and have been reading this book to them chapter by chapter. The narrative appealed to our precocious but math-phobic ten-year-old, so that she wasn't even aware she was doing math. The topics and exercises appealed to our math nerd thirteen-year-old, who has taken on the task of disproving the four-color map proof. The exercises in the book are well-explained, and require only simple materials such as paper, pencil and dice. I provided the children with just a bit of background information. For example, we hadn't done much work in probability, and needed a little background before we played with weird dice. However, most topics (fractals, chaos theory, topology, etc.,)were so well explained, no further information was necessary. I recommend this book for all those who wish to interest their children in mathematics beyond the humdrum rote of math facts.
