Recommended to scholars and graduate students

Introduction to Stochastic Search and Optimization provides comprehensive, current information on methods for real-world problem solving, including stochastic gradient and non-gradient techniques, as well as relatively recent innovations such as simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, and MCMC. It is written to be read and understood by graduate students, industrial practitioners, and experienced researchers in the field. Web links to software and data sets, and an extensive list of references of the book allows the reader to explore deeper into certain topic areas. I also found the index to be very comprehensive and carefully done. The appendices are as a refresher and summary of much of the prerequisite material. The book is somewhat unique in providing a balanced discussion of algorithms, including both their strengths and weaknesses. The book is among very few books that have integrated essential parts of statistical fields with optimization and decision making. The book's inclusion of a chapter on optimal experimental design is an example of such integration. The approaches discussed in the book could be used for financial decision making, forecasting, and quality improvement, among many other areas.

Great intro to optimization from stochastic perspective

I stumbled upon this book searching for a Genetic Algorithm book. The coverage of topics are unique and very interesting. This is the first book I came across that treats both the evolutionary algorithms (GA) and the stochastic search methods. Recursive Linear Estimator (e.g. Kalman Filter), Markov Chain Monte Carlo (e.g. Metropolis-Hastings, Gibbs), and Reinforcement Learning, are some of the stochastic material discussed. Continuous and discrete parameters are treated as well as noisy data, but not so much on constrained optimization.

The algorithms presented are very practical and theoretically well founded. When I learned about SPSA, I was most impressed to find out that it is possible to estimate the gradient by just two objective function calls (instead of finite differencing every dimension of the parameter vector to be optimized), and this is regardless of the number of dimensions of the parameter vector!

The book is aimed at rather general audiences in science and engineering. Rigorous mathematical details are avoided.

quintessential overview of what is unfortunately a dark corner of the field

Stochastic optimization seems to be a "dark corner" for the fields of optimization and of Monte Carlo methods. Spall brings a quantitative engineering perspective to the problems, yet gives theory its proper dues. Moreover, he weaves a consistent interpretation among these algorithms which deserve greater attention and focus. While he clearly is a practitioner, his original work in algorithmic stochastic search and that of those he's inspired will, in my opinion, enable new theory to arise, whereby problems with horrible violations of continuity and the like will be embedded in some kind of mathematical manifold, and notions of stochastic gradients will be seen as exploring these.

I heartily applaud this book. It was, for me, one of those which changed the way I looked at things overall.

Updated for 1988, this is one of those books that is organized for easy scanning - a fact I really appreciate. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Interactive Media Relations and Building Relationships with Reporters. The large number of case studies, online resources and specific strategies found within this book make for an easy recommendation.

Dan Janal is a direct competitor of mine. He writes books, articles, speaks, and consults on Internet marketing and so do I. We both started marketing on the Net long before Cyberspace was an overused word. His Online Marketing Handbook (OMH) competes in many ways w/ my "Essential Business Tactics for the Net." Perhaps that's why the two books are often seen on each others Amazon pages under "People who bought this book also bought..." Well, I'm here to say publicly I've learned one heck of a lot from Dan and OMH over the years. I still refer back to it from time to time.
I recommend you buy his book. I use many of the practices in it. Many of those practices were first documented in the first edition of OMH. Anyway, **after** you buy his book, see how it compares w/ mine. Dan and I would tell you they complement each other quite neatly.

Great Book!

In several years online, this is the first time I have written email for the sole purpose of commending a product wholeheartedly and without reservation. I borrowed your Online Marketing Handbook from my local public library out of curiosity, and became progressively more impressed as the pages turned.
I am a 33 year old student of Travel and Tourism, and will open a travel agency in a couple of years.
My weaknesses however, are in sales and marketing, (which I am studying) and your book has provided me with many answers to questions; some of which I had not yet thought of asking. Your examples and case studies are great resources, and you present currently practised techniques in a thoughtful, non-judgemental manner; discussing their pros and cons objectively. Moreover, the number of online resources relevant to your subject that you reveal would almost justify the cost of your book alone.
To summarise; thanks for a terrific resource, you can count on at least one sale to me, and I hope you make as much money from the Online Marketing Handbook as I intend to from its use.

Not the best book on this subject

After reading that perfect book "Common Sense Construction Law" by Smith, Currrie and Hancock LLP, I wanted to learn more about construction claims and bought this book. However I am very disappointed. I can definitely say that this is not the best book on this subject.

Simply superb !

As a reliability engineer, I do a lot of probabilistic risk analysis and reliability based design for large systems like gas turbines, etc. From both a theoretical and applied perspective, this is an excellent text for those getting into this subject.
The book is written in a pleasing style, in which complex ideas are introduced in a manner than anyone (with no prior statistical training) can understand. It is a small book that packs a lot of information in it, and the companion volume by the same authors is another excellent text on the same topic. I particularly liked their treatment of LRFD methods and the FORM algorithms.
On the negative side, I found the algorithms described in Madsen's "Methods of structural safety" easier to implement. The authors might want to incorporate some of those methods in their next edition. They could also discuss approaches to model time-dependent reliability, apart from including empirical probability distributions in design.
Overall, I have read most of the texts out there in reliability-based design and this is clearly the best. It's an expensive book, but well worth the money !

It captures all different aspects of probability, reliability and statistical methods in engineering design in one book with clear details and examples. The latest advancements in this area are also included in this book. I do recommend it for any engineering student taking courses in this area.

Expected More But Not Disappointed

Like someone else said, I read this because we homeschool. I had heard what a great book this was but when I got it I was honestly a little disappointed. I'm sure if my kids were still in public school it would have been more useful but it just wasn't any help to us as homeschoolers/unschoolers.

I'd still recommend it to people who are disenchanted with the public school system but I know now not to recommend it so much to my fellow homeschoolers.

Something Amiss in the Classroom?

For most of us who grew up inside a public educational institution, it is difficult to imagine alternatives. Indeed, it may difficult to imagine anything at all. After twelve (in my case 19) years of absract inundation, most of us have lost the trees in a forest of abstractions. We inhabit a vacuous matrix of unispired, cynical defeatism, where teachers can't level with us as human beings and test questions bear no resemblance to reality. Until graduation day, that is. Then the world opens up before us, free for the plunder of active, self-interested engagement. What if we had never left that world from start? What if from birth to grave our lives were naturally interesting and piquant? What if we didn't educate ourselves for the test, but instead focused on the context of our life and followed our natural curiosities? Einstein (a college drop-out) certainly thought this was the right approach to education: "It is in fact nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet strangle the holy curiosity of inquiry." Good content, often seems too wordy

I disagree in part with the comments below. This book covers most basic aspects of raster-based modeling. Most GIS books I come across seem to focus on vector format data and concepts. I found this book is a breath of fresh air. And it doesn't limit itself to one particular GIS sofware package and their algorithms when discussing raster abilities. My only negative comments are that it often seems too wordy (although that may be a function of the book layout, it's printed on 8.5 x 11 paper and many pages are single column text only which really appear daunting when looking at them), some subjects could use better, more in-depth coverage with diagrams and figures, and the price.

Raster-based modeling is a rich environment with great potential and I think this book gives a much better introduction than more general GIS books. In addition to this book, I would also recommend books by Joseph K Berry for more advanced raster analysis topics.

Decent text covering Raster usage in GIS applications

If you're interested in working with raster data (that's the pixellated kind, like digital photos or elevation maps) this is a decent introduction and mid-level instructional text. It covers what some of the raster file formats include, some of the algebra and functions you can perform with raster files, and a number of other related topics. It's also a pretty short read, as textbooks go.

It was pretty good

We used this book in a class several years ago. It was a little dense, but most text books are. It was quite good, and now that I'm teaching GIS to high school kids, I have refered to it several times in order to help describe a concept or technique.

It's probaly not the best, but it's pretty good for the price.

About the Author

The late Arthur Rosenblatt, FAIA, was an architect and consultant who specialized in museums and cultural facilities. He was vice director, then vice president of architecture and planning at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He also served as director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, vice president of the Grand Central Partnership, and president of the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The late Stephen A. Kliment, FAIA (Series Founder and Editor), was an architectural journalist and an adjunct professor at the City College of New York. He was chief editor of Architectural Record from 1990 to 1996.

Valuable information complemented with detailed graphics is an effective combination for the understanding of such complex architectural program. Also, it contains a wide gamma of built projects throughout the world which gives the book an immediate reliability quality. Go ahead and get it!

Not good when compared to other books in the "Building Type Basics" series

I own 4 books from Building Type Basics Series. They are Retail Facility, Hospitality Facility, Theater Facility and Museum Facility. So far, I considered this Museum Facility Book as the worst of all 4. For Retail, Hospitality and Theater, these three have a lot of generic information such as historical background of building type, space component, principles of design, etc. They also give a lot of examples based on those generic issues, topic by topic. In this Museum book, it is all about examples with plans and very little background information for each museums. There are a lot of pictures and plans which are not of good quality (I actually didn't expect them to be because it is not the strength of the series). I intended to buy this book (which is expensive) to obtain pure information. I did not get it either.

All I can say is, this book is not up to the par with the others in the same series that I own.

As a practicing architect with several museum clients, this book, written by an authority on museum architecture, is a very useful resource. During the design process of several recent projects, I have referred to the book and found answers to several of my questions. the format and selected projects are outstanding and the text is concise and effective. Its on my shelf by my desk and I will contiue to use it. Highly recommended.
