PATRICK A. GAUGHAN is President of Economatrix Research Associates, Inc. He is also Professor of Economics and Finance at the College of Business at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Gaughan has authored several books and articles in the field of mergers and acquisitions. Weak sister to other John Wiley Classics

As a graduate professor who teaches several course on M&A, I've chosen two other efforts from publisher John Wiley for this year's curriculum over Pat Gaughan's updated version of his old book. Jeffrey Hooke's "Practical Guide to Doing the Deal" covers most of the same material in a more interesting style and "Winning at Mergers & Acquisitions" shows my students how all of this applies to the real world. Mark Clemente & David Greenspan, authors of "Winning at M&A", helped my students to understand the business rationale behind deals and brought to light many of the reasons so many corporate combinations fail. In addition, the juicy chapters on strategy, due diligence and culture and a whole section on integration best practices -- I feel -- will prepare serious readers on the topic and students of business alike for the M&A challenges that actually exist in corporate America today. Case studies and testaments on what works and what doesn't from corporate VPs and CEOs involved in mergers and acquisitions make "Winning at M&A" the core content I've already added to next year's syllabus. As for John Wiley's reprinting of Gaughan's book, they probably should have asked Hooke and Gaughan to collaborate on an updated version rather than publish two versions of the same manuscript.

I throughly enjoyed reading Patrick Gaughan's book on Mergers, Acquisitions and Corportate Restrucurings. I am the president of a printing firm and was thinking along the lines of merging my company with another interested party down the road. I purchased Gaughan's book and it helped me understand how mergers worked in an easy to understand format. I have become more educated in this field by reading his book which would help me make better decisions in the future of my business. I highly recommend this to any professor teahing this course or for any CEO or COO who is also thinking along the lines of consolidation.

  This is a professional (but easily readable) monography. It is very comprehensive and can be used as both a textbook and a handbook. The author is a well-known expert on the subject and he conveys his knowledge to the reader. Among the many books available, this one is the likeliest to be "the only one you must have if you can afford only one".

  I have been studying hypnotism for many years now. Saying that when I got this book I read it from front to back. It is a excellent resource for anyone practicing hypnotism.
  
  Warning though: If you like the idea of hypnotism as a fad don't buy this book. This book is for people who use it as a desk reference and source of knowledge to help further their skills in the field of hypnotism.

The latter book gives all of the methods in square root filtering algorithms and derivations and more. Almost completely useless book ...

Of course the experience of the authors is great but none of it you can use either in your study or research. It is impossible to learn about Kalman filtering from this book as well as to improve your knowledge in this area. Book is intended for professionals in this area but professionals will not need it. Many intersting facts but no detailed information. For example one can know that the square root filtering method came from James Potter but there is nothing more about this method from this book. Otherwise you have to study sources of the software (included). Book is written as advertizing of author's skills and nothing else. Too much about nothing ...

About the Author
Larry W. Mays is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Arizona State University and former chair of the department. He was formerly Director of the Center for Research in Water Resources at The University of Texas at Austin where he also held an Engineering Foundation Endowed Professorship. A registered professional engineer in seven states and a registered professional hydrologist, he has served as a consultant to many organizations. Professor Mays is author of Optimal Control for Hydrosystems (Marcel-Dekkar, Inc.), co-author of Applied Hydrology (McGraw-Hill) and Hydrosystems Engineering and Management (McGraw-Hill), and editor-in-chief of the Water Resources Handbook (McGraw-Hill), Hydraulic Design and Handbook (McGraw-Hill), and the Water Distribution Systems Handbook (McGraw-Hill). He was also editor-in-chief of Reliability Analysis of Water Distribution Systems (ASCE) and co-editor of Computer Modeling of Free Surface and Pressurized Flows (Kluwer Academic Publishers). Among his honors include a distinguished alumnus award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1999.

Larry W. Mays has written an outstanding text that provide students with a complete picture of water resources engineering by integrating the fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, and contaminant transport processes. The material in the text is presented from first principles, is rigorous, is relevant to the practice of water resources engineering, and is reinforced by detailed presetations of design applications. A text worth having next to vintage books on this subject in W-R engineers' library.

Water Resources Engineering

This book is loaded with good information, but we found errors in key hydraulic formulas, which quickly led me not to trust anything out of the book. The sad part is, this was a required text for an engineering class. Maybe the new edition has remedied the problems, but I wouldn't recommend the edition I bought.

Excellent Textbook

One of my coworkers had this book, I kept using it as a reference so I eventually bought my own copy. It is an outstanding textbook and an important reference book to have on hand. I highly recommned it. It is far better than the "Hydraulic Engineering" textbook I had in college.

This is an elegant and well-written classic. Scheffe's proofs are clear and straightforward, without being too terse. His use of orthogonal bases for vector spaces makes proofs of independence and derivations of distributions easy to understand. _The Analysis of Variance_ has definitely stood the test of time.

So the books has two different flavours: the text delivers a very intuitive presentation of the models and the formulae provide a very rigorous presentation of the claimed results. Everything is there: fixed effects, random effects, analysis of covariance, nested design, mixed design, you name it. Unlike other books I find it really easy to identify the geeky maths that I can avoid to gain a superficial understanding of the models, going back to the maths later.

The book does not address the problems of model selection or validation, but this has been discussed elsewhere many times.

We have just used it to define a model for a paper in 2013 and could find model assumptions and properties in a few minutes. Thank you, Scheffé!
