FOCUS ON THE BASICS... AND BRING CRITICAL SKILLS INTO FOCUS!

By emphasizing the three key concepts of mechanics of solids (Equilibrium, Force-Temperature-Deformation Behavior of Materials, and Geometry of Deformation), this new Second Edition helps readers improve their problem-solving skills. They'll discover how these fundamental concepts underlie all of the applications presented, and they'll learn how to identify the equations needed to solve various problems. And with the addition of detailed example problems integrated throughout the chapters, readers learn how to organize their solutions and think like practicing engineers.

The MDSolids software included with the text also adds to the development of readers' skills. This CD-ROM helps them confirm solutions obtained by hand calculation, view sketches and graphs that illustrate how members deform and how stresses are distributed, and search through extensive help files to find solution procedures and tips. An additional 90 examples problems are provided on the software that are similar to the ones presented in the book.

Key Features of the Second Edition

  • A Strong emphasis is placed on the basics to help readers gain a better understanding of the material and enhance their problem-solving skills.
  • A four-step problem-solving procedure is introduced that includes Plan the Solution and Review the Solution se4ctions. This procedure helps readers determine how to solve a problem and check the solution for accuracy.
  • Thirty computer exercises are included in the text. Twenty of these exercises encourage readers to use application software (FORTRAN,C, spreadsheet program, MathCAD, MATLAB and more) to solve problems. Ten of the exercises are specifically designed for MDSolids solutions. Readers will gain an appreciation of this software as they solve complex problems that involve several stages.

a Structural PE perspective
By Amazon Customer
I became familiar with this outstanding text when my son took a strength of materials course at the University of Texas at Austin. As a Professional Structural Engineer, I understood the importance of this course in the engineering curriculum. Also, I know from experience that many good students have trouble mastering the material. So I bought a copy so I could help my son by telephone. I am familiar with all the major texts in this subject including the classic book by Gere and Timoshenko and the popular text by Beer and Johnston.
I was immediately impressed with the Craig book. The text has clear discussions and explanations and a masterful emphasis on the three fundamentals of structural mechanics: equilibrium, material behavior and geometry of deformation. For my money it is head and shoulders above the Gere and Timoshenko and the Beer and Johnston texts. Not that they are bad books; but the Craig book is a much better book. The Beer and Johnston text is largely a cookbook approach. The emphasis is on learning specific methods to solve specific types of problems. The Gere and Timoshenko text is a virtual strength of materials encyclopedia. No book in this field has a more thorough discussion of beams. But what students (and practicing engineers) need most is where the Craig text has no peer: 1)clear, simple explanations with an emphasis on equilibrium, material behavior, and geometry of deformation and 2)a rational and logical problem solving procedure that shows students how practicing engineers approach real-world problems. A student who learns the material in this book will have solid basis for becoming a competent engineer and for more advanced work in structural mechanics.
Some of the strengths of this text include:
1. A graphic-based menu-driven computer program that includes for modules for beams, section properties, solution of simultaneous linear algebraic equations, plotting shear and moment diagrams, and plotting of Mohr's circles for stress and strain. The output from one module can be imported to the other modules. This is very user-friendly software. It can be used to solve homework problems and for carrying out iterative design solutions.
2. Emphasis on a rational and logical four-step problem-solving procedure including flow charts. The procedure includes planning the solution as well as reviewing the solution for reasonableness. Making these two steps an ingrained habit is essential to being a competent and proficient structural engineer.
3. Repeated emphasis on the three fundamental concepts of structural mechanics: equilibrium, deformation behavior of materials, and geometry of deformation. Part of becoming a competent engineer is making these three concepts second nature and learning to apply them in a skillful manner.
4. The use of force-method and displacement-method concepts; understanding these concepts is essential in more advanced work in structural mechanics.
5. All of the traditional mechanics of materials subjects are covered including what I consider the best, most through discussion of strain found in any of the popular texts on this subject. The discussion of strain includes a thorough explanation of the concept of deformation diagrams and strain-displacement analysis.
6. An introductory chapter that reviews the concept of static equilibrium and relates it to the equilibrium of deformable bodies.
7. A superior discussion of stress concentrations and failure theories.
8. Exceptionally clear discussions of stress and strain in beams.
9. The illustrations in the Craig text are clearly superior to the illustrations in the competitive texts.
10. Appendix A includes a valuable discussion of the use of power series approximation formulas. The approximations are useful in strain-displacement analysis because they allow the reduction of complex, nonlinear strain-displacement equations to linear, small-displacement forms.
11. The Craig book comes across to me as a book written by someone who passionately cares about his subject and really wants his students to understand the subject. Not just to learn enough problem solutions to pass the course. I get the impression that this book was a labor of love by the author. If an engineering student can pick up on that he has to believe that this is an important subject to master, not just to pass. The writing in the competitive texts comes across as somewhat stale. Maybe they have been through so many editions they just are not fresh and have become another job for the authors.

Review by a stress engineer
By Lawrence W. Maxwell
1. Emphasis on fundamentals - slower-paced in the beginning where engineering books should be. 2. Does not waste space on advanced topics such as thick, curved beams, etc. 3. Exception to 2 (above): Gives a brief introduction to the finite element method which is vital to today's stress engineer. Includes a 4-page insert of photos of FEM models. 4. Does not use complicated matrix and tensor notation. 5. Uses concepts of equilibrium. stress-strain, and geometric compatibility where possible. 6. Provides a systematic, 4-step, problem-solving procedure which includes a review of the solution (something many engineers don't do enough) 7. Comprehensive discussion of strain. 8. Numerous examples and HW problems. 9. Comes with a CD-ROM containing an award-winning program called MDSolids which has numerous modules for problem solving of beams, trusses, Mohr's circle, properties, etc. It is the most user-friendly software I have ever used, and I have used a lot of software over 30 years. The CD has built-in examples for learning the material, but the modules also allow you to input your own problems. For example, the Beam Module allows you to break up a beam into up to 10 finite elements with generic loads on each element. Output values are tabulated and plotted for shear, moment, slope, and deflection. An added feature is that you can import values from one module into another. For example, you can use the Properties Module to calculate area and moments of inertia, and then import those values into the Beam Module. The CD alone is worth the price of the book.

Mechanic Of Materials, 2nd Edition
By Anonymouse
This book is excellent. I was educated as a nuclear engineer, but seem to constantly be drawn into mechanical problems in the power plant. I bought this book to teach myself mechanics of materials so I could develop a finite element analysis program to analyze turbine generator component stress' and strains.

The book is well organized and well written. The examples are good, and the homework problems are hard enough to make you think.

My only suggestion, for other non-mechanical engineers who buy this book to learn this material, is that you also have a engineering statics book available for reference when solving the homework problems in chapter one and two.

Jeff Davis's Own: Cavalry, Comanches, and the Battle for the Texas Frontier, by James R. Arnold

The men of the Second Cavalry went to Texas to fight Indians.

Then they returned home to fight each other. The creation of the Second Cavalry in 1855 was a watershed event in the history of the United States Army. Ordered to engage the Native American tribes whose persistent raids were slowing the settlement of the West, the officers of the Second were unwittingly preparing to fight each other. Established by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, the Second and its officers were assigned-disregarding Army tradition-on the basis of merit and not seniority. Davis's innovation proved sound: Half of the full generals in Davis's Confederate army had served with the Second Cavalry prior to the outbreak of the Civil War.Texas's western frontier was their battleground, and the warriors of the Comanche tribe were their foes. Forsaking the infantry's rustic stockades that had merely served as detour signs for fleet raiding parties, the Second Cavalry developed innovative tactics to address a novel situation, thereby showing the army how to complete the conquest of the West. Led by men such as Robert E. Lee (in his first independent combat command), John Bell Hood, and George Thomas, the troopers of the Second Cavalry schooled themselves in the tactics and strategies of mobile desert warfare, tutored by a skilled and tireless adversary.Drawing upon a wealth of military documents, archival materials, period newspapers, and personal journals, Arnold adds a new and insightful chapter to the history of the U.S. Army and the men who shaped it.

From Publishers Weekly
Created in 1855 by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, the 2nd United States Cavalry was led by Col. Albert Sidney Johnston, Lt. Col. Robert E. Lee and Maj. George H. Thomas. Arnold (Grant Wins the War) chronicles the birth and pre-Civil War service of this mounted regiment on the Texas frontier. When white settlers first moved into central Texas, the fierce Comanche warriors raided frontier settlements, stealing horses and cattle, killing men and carrying off women. After Texas became a state, the 2nd Cavalry was sent to guard the Texans and attack the hostiles. The result was a mixed bag of successes and failures as the cavalry companies grappled with the weather, civilians, hostile and friendly Indians, loneliness and isolation, and oftentimes lack of adequate supplies. Arnold writes of the unit's weapons and uniforms, its selection of horses, training at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, and its long march overland to the Texas frontier. The next five years were spent in frustrating combat and patrol against the Indians. There were occasional successes, such as Lt. John B. Hood's aggressive patrolling in 1857 and Earl Van Dorn's attack on a Comanche village at Crooked Creek in 1859. The regiment left Texas in 1861 and was redesignated the 5th U.S. Cavalry when the War Department reorganized the army's mounted units that year. Not since William Price's 1883 regimental history have the early years of this famous unit, which produced more general officers of Civil War fame than any other, received their due coverage. While this book will be a hard sell beyond its niche of regional war buffs, Arnold has produced an elegantly written narrative that will captivate anyone interested in this facet of American frontier history. From Booklist
The author of Grant Wins the War (1997) provides a thorough, readable overview of the raising of the U.S. Second Cavalry and its activities on the Texas frontier. After the Mexican War, the U.S. was obligated to defend settlement in Texas and keep Indians in the new state out of Mexico. So restraining the Comanches, few in number but large in ferocity and skill, required cavalry. So Secretary of War Jefferson Davis generated the first two cavalry regiments, whose first three commanding officers were Albert Sidney Johnston, Robert E. Lee, and George Thomas; 13 other officers also became Civil War generals. The cavalrymen were a motley lot, who on the whole gave useful service despite unsuitable horses; the climate, terrain, and size of Texas; the quality of the opposition; shortages of supplies; and the Texans' total lack of cooperation in any sort of peaceful relationship with the Comanches. More historians should produce books as balanced, erudite, and smoothly written as regularly as Arnold does. Roland Green

Supposed to be History, not a Novel.
By Christopher R. Fischer
I must say I've read just about every book on the US Army in the 1850's...and while this book is OK it was little more than the original book by Col. Simpson "Cry Comanchee". I was surpirsed that this book was three times as thick and really offered almost NO new information...furthermore I was very trouble by the author's attmepts to make his work into an easy read novel...a very scarry trend in history today in order to reach the greater public. He describes the gut feelings of men who never left a record of how they felt that morning, nor that they knew this patrol would be different from the rest...I was disappointed as I realized that all the additional pages were filler about conjections of peoples emotions that have been long gone. He even talks about the troopers packing their saddlebags...a quick look at the VERY published inspector General reports of the 2nd shows the companies had no saddlebags! There is little academic research, there has been alot of information of the arms, equipments, etc of the old 2nd Cavalry (now 5th Cavalry) come to light in the last 20 years and it is obvious the author has not spent any real time at the US Cavalry Museum nor researched and primary sources that Col. Simpson didn't already. All in all I am not usually this harsh, but I did pay full price (which was TWICE what I paid for a new copy from the pubilsher of the long out of print "Cry Comanchee") and was very upset. The original publisher still has several copies of "CC" for sale and I sadly must suggest you go to them and buy that book instead.

For nonfiction, it reads fairly easily. The book can get divergent and a little long winded.

A fascinating account of the pre-Civil War army.
By T. E. Vaughn
It is fairly unusual to find a military history book that breaks new ground about the men who fought as commanders in the Civil War. Best known for their exploits as either Union or Confederate leaders, the events that shaped the lives of these men are seldom chronicled. This well-written, well-researched book not only talks about the men but also the army of the pre-Civil War years.
The title refers to the U.S. 2d Cavalry, formed in the 1850's to fight the Comanches on the the Texas frontier. Jefferson Davis was the Secretary of War and hand-picked his officers for what became an elite body of mounted soldiers. Known as "Jeff Davis's Own" because of his patronage, the 2d Cavalry got the best of everything available and their promotions were done outside the normal Army channels. Some of the men, like Robert E. Lee, had fought in the Mexican War of 1846 but the combat veterans also served along young officers eager to prove themselves in battle and win both brevets and glory.
The 2d Cavalry found itself fighting a resourceful and clever enemy, the Comanches, and learned hard lessons about conventional tactics being used against unconventional forces. Indeed, the parallels between the 2d Cavalry's campaign against the "guerrillas" of the Texas frontier and Vietnam are startling... and very well presented. Just as in Vietnam, the Army adapted and in vicious fights, frequently without quarter, began to prevail. It was a triumph of small, dedicated groups of soldiers being used effectively by officers who lead from the front.
Almost all of the officers of the 2d Cavalry became generals during the Civil War, some dying in battle. The book tells of the personal anguish these professional soldiers felt at having to decide whether to stay with the United States Army or go to the Confederacy. These were hard men who made hard choices, both on the battlefields of the frontier, facing one of the harshest climates in the world, and about the future course of their county.
An excellent, excellent book. James Arnold has done a great service with this fascinating, even-handed and detailed account of the 2d Cavalry, "Jeff Davis's Own."

From the Publisher
This book addresses typical problems an entrepreneur faces in developing a company. It discusses commonly encountered "growing pains", building management teams, the management process, management information reporting, finding and keeping good people and legal issues.

From the Inside Flap
Many entrepreneurs spend years building a company up from nothing only to be shocked when they hit "the wall." The wall is the point past which one person's hard work, determination, and sheer force of will are no longer enough to keep a company growing. If this sounds familiar, the first thing you should know is that you can make it over the wall, and your company can keep growing long into the future. But you must be willing to change. You need to develop the right management team and the right business and communications systems; and you have to give up enough control so that other people can do their jobs. It won't be easy. You'll need solid guidance to choose the best course of action and avoid the pitfalls that beset rapidly growing companies. You'll need The Road to Success. The professionals at Grant Thornton LLP have helped hundreds of entrepreneurs and their companies break through the wall. In this book, they put that experience into a form that helps all entrepreneurs and their CPAs manage and encourage growth. Using case studies and organization charts that describe actual situations, this book tackles the entire spectrum of problems faced by growing companies, including:
* Keeping pace with growth
* Developing a strategic plan
* Reorganizing a rapidly expanding entrepreneurial company
* Reporting meaningful information quickly and accurately
* Acquiring, integrating, and implementing information technology for cost-effectiveness
* Finding and retaining good people
* Establishing a board of directors
* Passing the torch to the next generation: Succession
If your company has hit the wall, this book will help you start growing again. If you're still in the early stages of growth, implementing these concepts, systems, and procedures will let you glide over the wall with hardly a bump.

The only complete guide to an increasingly popular approach to futures trading

This book outlines a highly successful alternative approach to trading commodity futures, specially tailored to today's low-priced commodities markets. Unlike technical analysis, which uses statistics to inform trading decisions, scale trading is a form of fundamental analysis in which a trader slowly buys prices as they reach bottom and sells them as they climb back up. Hal Masover describes scaling techniques that work in every commodity market, including metals, energies, utilities, and agriculture. And he supplies readers with a scale trading system that generates a complete rundown of how much money will be needed, when, and where.

  • Satisfies the growing demand for guides to fundamental analysis-based futures trading

Hal Masover (Fairfield, IA) is cofounder of Crown Futures, a top trading firm with offices in Fairfield, Iowa, Boulder, Colorado, and Cleveland, Ohio. He has been successfully trading futures since 1985.

From the Inside Flap
Successful commodities trading requires knowledge, skill, a healthy dose of optimism-and a logical and effective trading approach. Scale trading offers just such an approach, and this realistic and informative book tells you why.

One of the simplest and most versatile methods of trading, scale trading involves buying a commodity at progressively lower prices until it ceases to decline, then selling it at progressively higher prices as it rises. One of the greatest benefits of scale trading is that it gives small individual traders the ability to emulate a trading method used by megatraders. Originally developed as an adaptation of a gambling system, this method ultimately offers individuals an accessible yet sophisticated tool that does not require familiarity with advanced mathematical calculations or complex indicators. What is required is the knowledge of how a market behaves.

Presenting an explanation of the sound principles upon which scale trading is based-and why it lends itself particularly well to commodities-top trader Hal Masover shares his wisdom and extensive experience to answer questions, such as when to begin a program of scale-down buying, and how much capital is required. Also included are numerous examples, illustrations, charts, and tables covering everything from the fundamentals of different markets to how to construct a scale, choose a broker, and more to get you profiting from this practical methodology for long-term trading success.

Trading on common sense
By Xan
Finally there is a well-tested method for investing in commodity futures with reduced risk, based on the logic of fundamental factors rather than the fancy footwork of technical predictions. This book is well-written and clear, and brings us the straight-forward trading system successfully developed by Robert Weist in the 1970's.

A good and practical guide to profitable commodity trading for certain types of individuals.
By D Martin
A good practical guide to a method of profitable commodity trading. This book offers a trading style that would be very effective for people with deep pockets and a lot of patience, but it does work.

When Good Companies Do Bad Things: Responsibility and Risk in an Age of Globalization, by Peter Schwartz, Blair Gibb

A good reputation is certainly an asset for any company, but to a public that has raised its expectations of business' responsibility to society, being good just isn't good enough. More than public relations posturing or kowtowing to political correctness, social responsibility in corporations is proving essential to the long-term success of companies in today's globalized economy. Businesses must now contend with a globalized public that is increasingly aware of business' obligations to society and expects a level of accountability that most companies cannot meet. Good companies must go beyond merely being good-they must have integrity and a strategy aligned with it.

Integrity in business has traditionally meant being honest, upright, and ethical, but in response to globalization, companies are being forced to move beyond this definition and add to it another fundamental quality-integration with society. Corporations must anticipate and respond directly to the demands of public opinion rather than waiting for government intervention, mediation, and regulation to force them into action. When Good Companies Do Bad Things explores the strategic relationship between know-how, integrity, and integration, demonstrating how companies that fail to embrace the deeper meanings of these terms jeopardize their reputations and future prosperity.

The notion of corporations taking on social issues for the greater good is gaining momentum, not only because of political correctness but because it can strengthen a company's long-term strategy. Peter Schwartz and Blair Gibb examine well-known cases of companies like Shell, Nike, Texaco, and Nestlé, illustrating the huge financial risks of corporate assumptions that lead many companies to make poor choices. When Good Companies Do Bad Things explores the strategic relationship between know-how and integrity, demonstrating how companies that do not embrace the deeper meanings of these terms can jeopardize their own reputations and future prosperity. The authors present new approaches that demonstrate how it is possible to translate social value into business value.

Peter Schwartz, author of The Art of the Long View, and Blair Gibb recount well-known cases of companies like Shell, Nike, Texaco, and Nestlé, companies that found themselves facing accusations of hazardous environmental practices, racism in the workplace, and human rights violations. To themselves and the corporate world they were each considered good companies, until they were blindsided by issues on which large segments of the public felt that their trust had been violated. Schwartz and Gibb present new approaches to avoid the financial pitfalls of bad corporate assumptions and enable good companies to make good on translating social value into business value.

About the Author
PETER SCHWARTZ is Chairman of the Global Business Network and author of the bestselling The Art of the Long View. He is the former head of scenario planning at Royal Dutch/Shell in London and directed the Strategic Environment Center at SRI International.

BLAIR GIBB is a GBN principal, former planning officer at Amnesty International's London headquarters, an international trade specialist, and poet.

Case studies packed in with bs
By A Customer
This book was terrible. The writer presented several interesting case studies of good companies doing bad things, and even of good companies doing good things, which was a well written 30 or so pages. The rest of the book was just nonsense or obvious ideals thrown in there so that the author would be able to sell the book instead of making it a smaller article.

When regular people need to understand complex problems...
By Andrea C. Viggiano
Ultimately a hopeful book, When Good Companies Do Bad Things attacks the concept of corporations as monoliths. Instead, through examples, anecdotes and analysis, we see that global business corporations are more human than we think, for better and worse, and subject to change---if they [and we] choose it-- for the better. I found my questions addressed as they arose from the reading; the balanced perspective [neither "anti" nor "pro-business"]offers a real opportunity to understand a complex social issue.

A must read for CEOs
By A Customer
The issues tackled are stuff companies might usually ignore. But unless companies do anything do about these things, who else could make a difference in this world?

Fantastic introduction
By A Customer
This book is a very impressive introduction to wireless systems. Since I knew practically nothing before getting this book, and I was attempting to use Stuber, this book was a life saver.
There are many many diagrams that clearly show the affects of fading (ralyeigh, lognormal etc), as well as very clear derivations of how rayleigh is produced from two normal R.V.'s and so on.
I also really liked all the examples. There must be 15 examples per chapter (compared with 1 per chapter in Stuber, and his chapters are like 150 pages long).
To understand this book you will need a least one course in "signals and systems" as well as a course that deals with probability (up to Normal distributions and random variables and processes would also help you), and a course on modulation theory, such as quadrature and inphase components and power spectral density. If you have that background information you will really enjoy this book.
This book is even more of an introduction that Rappaport. By using this book and Rappaports together, you will have a fighting chance at terrible books like Stuber's.
Once again though, it was really refreshing to see a book written like this. Hey Dr. Shankar, why not write a thicker book to get Stubers book off the market?

This is a bad book
By Mark
This a bad book, and in quite a number of spots it is just flat out wrong/misleading/wrongly labeled etc. Sadly, it was required text for a class I am doing in wireless communication. I have never had such a bad time, since the teacher was constantly correcting silly errors that the book had made. Some examples are:
1. In section 2.1 it uses some formulas to calculate power received, the problem here is that the author mislabels his formulas, so if you don't have help, it is quite a feat to follow, and understand what the author is trying to do.
2. section 2.3.3 where he describes "frequency dispersive behavior of the channel", but the section is called, "time dispersive behavior of the channel.
The book is littered with stupid mistakes like this, and if you are made to buy this book, just ask your teacher why he/she hates you.

More statistics than technique
By brad
I was hoping to get more strategy for mitigating risk of system failure than was actually addressed. Overall, still useful, but is more targeted at networks than systems with embedded computers.
